Role of Binder Phase

Hard metal alloys are considered composite materials because they contain a mixture of hard refractory carbides within a ductile metal binder. Small amounts of refractory carbides like tungsten carbide are added to metals to increase hardness. The WC-Co system is widely used for hard metals because cobalt acts as a solid solution binder that allows densification at lower temperatures than other binders. The solid state sintering process involves three stages: initial stage, intermediate stage, and final stage. The role of the binder during sintering is to facilitate mass transport via solid state diffusion, allowing the carbides to densify and grow together. While the sintering mechanism is the same for alloys

Search and Read the article “The Role of the Binder Phase in the WC-Co Sintering” A.G.P. da
Silva, W.D. Schubert, B. Lux; Materials Research, 4(2), 59-62, 2001 and answer the following.

1. Hard metal alloys are considered a typical example of a composite material, why?
[5]

2. What is the reason for adding small amounts of refractory carbides to metals? [2]

3. Reason why WC-Co is the best system for hard metals? [7]

4. Describe three stages in solid state sintering process? [3]

5. What is the role of binder in the sintering of hard metal? [3]

6. The microstructures and the dilatometric curves for shrinkage as well as shrinkage
rate of alloys G1 and G2 look quite different, although the sintering mechanism for
both alloys is the same. Explain this anomaly? [10]
