A Learning Plan in English

Grade 8

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the learners will be able to;

1. Differentiate Direct Speech from Indirect Speech.


2. Change sentences from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech and vice
versa.
3. Determine the steps in converting Direct Speech to Reported Speech.

III. PROCEDURE

1. Preliminaries
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of attendance
 Drill (Mcdoo, Chow King, Jollibee game!)
2. Review
The teacher will ask the following questions:
 What is your understanding about Direct and Indirect Speech?
 Is it possible converting Direct Speech into Indirect Speech?
 What is the Basic Rules for Indirect Speech?
3. Motivation
 The students will play a game called, “Pass the Message”

Group 1- “I am definitely fine”

Group 2- “Forever do exist”

Group 3- “Things happen for a reason”

4. Lesson Presentation
 Presentation of objectives and lesson.
 Direct Speech- describes when something that may
have been said-but there is a subtle difference between
them.
 Indirect Speech- will still share the same information-
but instead of expressing someone’s comments or speech
directly repeating them, it involves reporting or describing
what was said.

 Examples:

 We said to him, “Mind your own business.”


(Direct Speech)
 We urged him to mind his own business.
(Indirect Speech)
 She said to him, “Consult a doctor.” (Direct
Speech)
 She suggested him to consult a doctor. (Indirect
Speech)
A. ACTIVITY
The teacher will divide the students into 3 groups and each
group will be given a different task to do;

Group 1

Direction: Convert the Direct Speech into Indirect Speech.

1. Betty said, “I want to visit my friends this weekend”.


2. “I’m going to the cinema tonight”, Lally declared.
3. Marcia said, “I am ill”.
4. Father asked, “do you have class this Saturday?’
5. She said, “I watch TV every day.

Group 2

Direction: complete the sentence using Reported Speech. Change the tense if
necessary.

1. Carmela: “Our Principal will go to Cebu on Wednesday.


2. Carol:”I was printing the manuscript yesterday”.
3. Abby: “My brother flew to Singapore last month”.
4. Angie: “Rainier went to the mall an hour ago”.
5. Henry: “My mother will celebrate her birthday next month”.
Group 3

Direction: Rewrite each sentence. Correct shifts in verb tense.

1. Ian said, “I live in the countryside”.

2. Marie said, “I am cooking dinner”.

3. He said, “We have visited Palawan


twice”.
4. She said, “My brother went to Sulu
last week”.
5. Victoria said, “I had already eaten”.

B. ANALYSIS
 The teacher will check the work of the students.
 How were you able to identify the Direct and Indirect Speech?
 The teacher will let the students analyze an example from the
PowerPoint presentation.
