1. INTRODUCTION
This report is submitted to M/S ARAB ENGINEERING BUREAU for the design
and construction of RESIDENTIAL/COMMERCIAL AND OFFICE BUILDING
ON PLOT 748 –GHALA, BAUSHER. The main purpose of this report is to
compile and analyze the soil and laboratory testing, and to collect information about
the sub-soil and the groundwater condition. Such information would enable the
assessment of foundation type, level, and the recommendation of the allowable
bearing capacity as well as any precautions, which should be taken into account
during the foundations construction.
3.1. General
Drilling Four boreholes 101mm diameter at the proposed building location. Tree
boreholes were drilled to 20.00m below the existing ground level, and one
borehole (BH-4) was drilled down to 19.00 m.
Field logging of sub surface materials encountered and collection of the soil
samples for the geotechnical classification and other required tests.
Laboratory testing on representative soil samples collected during the drilling to
estimate pertinent engineering properties.
Reviewing published geological maps, references, and reports for the area and
previous experience of the firm within the nearby locality.
Performing engineering analysis to develop recommendations for foundations
and other earthwork elements.
The work was performed in accordance with the BS 5930: 1999, Code of Practice
for Site Investigations.
General location plan, site layout, as well as boreholes location layout are shown in
Figs. (1-A) to (1-B) presented in Appendix (B).
4.1. General
A site investigation was carried out at the proposed structure location from 18th
December to 24th December 2014 and was supervised by Geosol’s Engineer.
Four boreholes designated BH-1 to BH-4 were drilled in the proposed area using
Casagrande C-6 drilling rig operated by Geosol Engineering. The drilling unit was
equipped with a Hydraulic pressure pump employing bentonite slurry circulation.
The details of the boreholes are shown in table 4-1.
The borehole locations were set out by GEOSOL Engineer using GPS in accordance
with the site boundary shown by the client.
The depth from existing ground level and coordinates of the boreholes executed on
site are given in the following Table 4-1;

4.3.1. General:
The results of these tests are presented in Appendix (D). Summary of the test results
is tabulated in Appendix (E).
Table 4-2. Laboratory Tests with their Standard Test Specification and
Quantity
Physical properties of soil help to verify the visual classification and may be
used as a guide to predict the geotechnical, and mechanical behavior of the
soil. The following tests were carried out in cohesive and non-cohesive soils.
One sulphate content test on soil sample was carried out. The result
of which is shown in table 4-5.
Table 4-3 gives the requirement for Concrete to resist the Sulphate
attack based on the BRE Digest No.363:1991.
One Chloride content test on soil sample was carried out. The result
of which is shown in table 4-4.
The CIRIA guide to the concrete in the Gulf region considers that
chloride content in excess of 5% in soil or groundwater may have a
significant effect on reinforcement where adequate protective cover is
not provided. If there is high Chloride content in the foundation soil,
the usage of Sulphate Resisting Cement should be replaced with the
Ordinary Portland Cement for the Cement Concrete.
5.1. General
The geotechnical subsurface formation at the site is mainly composed of two
to three layers as illustrated in Table 5-1, and as indicated in the borehole logs
in Appendix C.
BH /TP
No. Layer 1 Layer 2 Layer 3
Based on all available data regarding the soil stratigraphy and the results of field
tests as well as laboratory tests, the geotechnical behavior of the main layers
encountered in area understudy shall be summarized as follows:
γb C Ø Es
LAYER 3 2 ko ka kp µ
kN/m kN/m deg. MPa
7. GEOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS
7.1. General
The foundations for different structures must generally satisfy two basic
criteria. First, the material beneath the foundation must have adequate bearing
capacity to support the maximum loads with an appropriate factor of safety.
Second, the expected settlements and/or differential settlements due to the
compressibility or consolidation of the underlying materials must be within the
tolerable limits.
The Maximum Net Allowable Bearing Capacity for a Raft foundation for
different depths, for a maximum allowable settlement of 50 mm based on
Terzaghi’s bearing capacity equations and the Guidelines given in Joseph’s
E. Bowles Foundation Analysis and Design- 5th Edition, and BS-8004-1995-
Code of Practice for Foundations is as indicated in the Table 7-1:
Table 7-1. Maximum Net Allowable Bearing Capacity for Raft Foundation
kN/m2 kN/m3
8. RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Excavation in the soil should be carried out with the Slope in the order of
1H: 1.5V, as minimum, based on the guidelines of BS 6031, 1981 British
Standard Code of Practice for Earthworks to achieve reasonable slope
stability safety factor otherwise an appropriate system of side support should
be provided.
2. Excavation of Limestone may require the use of rock breaker.
3. Any fill materials or rock boulders at the foundation level should be removed
4. Borders of excavation should extend at least 1.0 m outside the perimeter of
columns foundation.
5. The foundation system shall be plain concrete overlaid by reinforced
concrete footings. The thickness of the plain concrete base shall be chosen
according the structural design and the economic aspects of foundation
system.
6. After the completion of the excavation, foundations should be laid
immediately.
7. In view of Section 4.4.3, Sulphate Resistance Cement (SRC)) may be used in
all foundation concrete structures. Cement content should not be less than
300.0 Kg/m3. Concrete mixes should produce dense concrete having
minimum permeability. The maximum Water/Cement ratio is 0.450
8. All foundation structures that are in contact with soil beneath should be
coated with approved protective coating
9. The above reported recommendations are related to the soil condition
encountered at the locations of the drilled boreholes. Soil at the foundation
level should be well investigated during excavation down to the
recommended level. In case of finding any different, type of soil other than
that given in the borehole logs, the geotechnical engineer should be
consulted to re-evaluate the above recommendations.
