Homework 10

The document contains solutions to two math exercises. The first exercise finds the distance from an elliptic paraboloid to a point. The shortest distance is found to be √3/4, which corresponds to the point (0, √3/8, 3/4) on the paraboloid. The second exercise finds all second partial derivatives of the function ω = x3 + y3 + z3, listing the nine derivatives.

chapter 12.3
exercise 35
We have to find the distance from the elliptic paraboloid having equation z =
x2 + 2y 2 to the point A(0, 0, 1).
First we notice that the distance will be smallest, if there is P point on the
paraboloid and AP is perpendicular to the surrfce. So, it must be parallel to its
normal line. its normal line has equation:

n = 2xi + 4yj − k
we have (1)
AP = xi + yj + (z − 1)k

1
AP is parallel to n, so we have:

x = 2xt
y = 4yt
z − 1 = −t
one of x and y must be zero
ifx = 0, y = 0, we have
z =0+0=0
ifx = 0, we have
y = 4ty ⇒ t = 0.25
1 (2)
z−1=−
4 r

z= ⇒y=
4 8
ify = 0, we have
x = 2tx ⇒ t = 0.5

z−1=−
2 r

q
So we have 3 possible values for P. (0, 0, 0) , (0, 38 , 34 ) , and ( 12 , 0, − 12 ) for each
√ √ √

case,AP = 1, 4 , and 2 . 4 is the smallest so it is The distance that we should
find
