ENSOFT SOFTWARE PRODUCTS

DESIGNED FOR SINGLE USERS

IN WINDOWS 95/98/NT COMPUTERS
(Only for programs dated: February 1998 or newer)

INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
** To install this program, the user must have privileges to modify the Windows system and
registry. In large computer networks, this is usually only available to network administrators.
They are the ones recommended to proceed with these installations.
1. Please attach the hardware lock to any existing parallel port of your computer. As a
precaution to electrical shorts during installation, please install the hardware lock according
to the following instructions:
1.1 IMPORTANT: Turn off the computer power to avoid any possibility of damage to the
electrical circuitry.
1.2 Make sure that the I/O card is firmly seated on the motherboard.
1.3 Remove the printer or any external-device cable from the local computer, if attached.
1.4 Install the network lock its with male end towards the computer.
1.5 Reconnect the cable to the network lock, if a cable was previously attached to the
local computer.
2. Insert the software diskette in drive A or B.
3. While in Windows, select the Start menu. In the command box provided, type A:INSTALL
or B:INSTALL (where A or B is the floppy drive which contains the program diskette or its
backup), then press the <cr> or simply click the "OK" button. The process of installation
will be started. The installation program will automatically copy all necessary files to a
directory selected by the user (if the directory does not exist, the installation software will
create a new directory) in the chosen hard drive. The installation program will automatically
recognize the version of Windows that is running in the destination computer.
4. It is not necessary to reboot Windows for the program to run. The user may run the program
by double-clicking its icon in the ENSOFT folder.

GENERAL NOTES
a. The original software diskette may be copied for backup purposes using any standard method
for copying diskettes. However, the main executable files will only work if the hardware
lock is installed in a parallel port of the computer in use.
b. In some instances, while trying to execute the program, the user may receive a window with
the message "Unable to obtain authorization. Maximum user count exceeded or hardware

device not found". Please refer to the notes below under “Unable to Start the Program” when
this occurs.
c. The hardware lock should operate in series with other locks but will not operate if connected
in series with other Ensoft locks. If the user gets unknown error messages while trying to run
the programs, it is recommended to try each lock individually to check for possible conflicts.

UNABLE TO START THE PROGRAM

In some instances, while trying to execute the program, the user may receive a window with the
message "Unable to obtain authorization. Maximum user count exceeded or hardware device not
found". Possible explanations for this error message are the following:
1. Check that the computer in use is carrying the hardware lock in a parallel port. If not, the
user should verify that the hardware lock has the pins connected to an LPT port of the
computer (and not to a 25-pin modem port which connects differently).
2. The program may have not been installed properly on the computer. During installation,
there are a few files copied to the Windows system directory and modifications performed to
the Windows registry. In many cases, particularly on NT machines, these modifications may
only be allowed to the network administrator. The files “readme.95,” “readme.98” and
“readme.nt” specify the modifications that are performed in each operating system, either
Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT. To solve this problem, the program can be re-installed in
the computer making sure that the user logged in the computer during installation is
authorized to make changes to the Windows registry.
3. Check that a version of the program is not already running in the background. This can be
easily verified by pressing “Ctrl-Alt-Del” simultaneously and checking the list of programs
that are operating in the computer (after pressing “Ctrl-Alt-Del” simultaneously, select the
“Task Manager” icon in Windows NT 4 systems).
