Measurement of Aniline Point: Experiment No.

The document describes an experiment to measure the aniline point of diesel fuel. [1] The aniline point is the lowest temperature at which aniline and the fuel form a single, homogeneous phase when mixed in equal volumes. [2] To determine the diesel's aniline point, 5mL of aniline and 5mL of diesel were mixed in a test tube and heated until fully mixed, then allowed to cool until separating into two phases. [3] The temperature at which separation occurred, 72.5°C, represents the aniline point of the diesel fuel sample.

Measurement of aniline point

1. Introduction:
Aniline point is the minimum temperature for a complete mixing of
aniline and materials such as gasoline; used in some specifications to
indicate the aromatic content of oils and to calculate approximate heat
of combustion.
The aniline point is called the "aniline point temperature" which is the
lowest temperature (°F or °C) at which equal volumes of aniline
(C6H5NH2) and the oil form a single phase. Aniline point of oil gives an
indication of the possible tendency of deterioration of oil when it comes
into contact with packing, rubbers sealing etc. in general oils with a high
aromatic content are more detrimental to rubber products than those
with a low aromatic content. The relative aromatic content of an oil is
indicated by its aniline point and oils with a high aromatic content have
a low aniline point and vice versa. The higher the aniline point of the
oil, the more desirable it is for drilling fluid usage. In our experiment, 5
ml aniline and 5ml diesel was taken in a test tube provided with
thermometer and heat was given until both aniline and diesel become
completely miscible.

2. Aim:
To determine the aniline & mixed aniline point of petroleum products
and hydrocarbon solvents.

3. Theory:
3|Page
This is an approximate measure of the aromatic content of a mixture of
hydrocarbons. It is defined as the lowest temperature at which oil is
completely miscible with an equal volume of aniline.

Since aromatics dissolve aniline (itself an aromatic substance) more

readily than paraffin or iso-paraffins, the lower the aniline point the
higher the proportion of aromatics in the oil. Since, also, the higher the
aromatic content of oil, the lower cetane number the aniline number can
used to indicate the probable behavior of oil in a diesel engine.
Typically paraffinic hydrocarbons have higher aniline points than
aromatic hydrocarbons.

4. Apparatus:
1. Aniline 5ml
2. Diesel 5ml
3. Test tube
4. Burner
5. Thermometer
6. Paraffin oil
7. Beaker

5. Procedure:

1. Placed an equal amount of aniline and crude oil products in a

tube (5mL) and mixed by magnetic stirrer.
2. The mixture is heated at a controlled rate until the two phases
become miscible.
3. Then the mixture is cooled, the temperature at which two
phases separate is recorded as the aniline point or mixed
aniline point.

6. Calculation:

By this way we can calculate aniline point of the normal gasoline:

The initial temperature which aniline is completely soluble and mixed
with diesel:
T1 = 74◦C (163.4◦F)
The final temperature which aniline and diesel separated completely:
T2 = 71◦C (161.8◦F)

Aniline point of diesel = 74 +71 = 72.5◦C (162.5◦F)

7. Discussion:

The aniline point for normal gasoline was 59◦C

Equal volumes of aniline and diesel oil are stirred continuously in a test
tube and heated until the two merge into a homogeneous solution.
Heating is stopped and the tube is allowed to cool. The temperature at
which the two phases separate out is recorded as aniline point. The
aniline point is a physical characteristic of  hydrocarbon compounds,
such as oils, and refers to the minimum temperature at which the
hydrocarbon and the same amount of the compound aniline are perfectly
miscible. At temperatures below this point, a mixture of the compound
and an equal volume of aniline will not dissolve together. The result of a
test, called the aniline test,  gives chemists this information about a
hydrocarbon, including certain details about its composition, such as the
relative content of aromatic chemicals and various paraffins. The test for
finding the aniline point of given oil or other hydrocarbon, such as a
petroleum distillate, is relatively simple. A volume of the test liquid and
equal volume of aniline are placed together in a container, such as a test
tube or other laboratory vessel, and slowly heated while being gently
agitated. When two liquids completely dissolve into one another, the
mixture turns from cloudy to clear. The sample is removed from the
heat and stirred until it becomes cloudy again. The temperature at that
point is the aniline point of that compound. It also gives us some
knowledge about the cetane number of the diesel. As we know that
diesel with high cetane number ignites and burns at a good rate. Which
shows greater number of straight chain hydrocarbons in it? Higher the
aniline point, lower the number of aromatic compounds in it. And it
results in high efficiency of fuel oil. So, greater aniline point compounds
have high cetane number and vice versa. This is because aromatic
7|Page
compounds decrease the efficiency of the fuel oil and its burning rate is
increased by the aromatic compounds and its aniline point is decreased.
Hence direct relation is established between aniline point and cetane
number.
Q/which of the following tests is not done for transformer oil?
