Foreword

These operating instructions for the EKS 3 (Safe Load Indicator

SLI) from the manufacturer Deutsche GROVE GmbH supplement
the operating instructions for the crane type.

These operating instructions replace all passages in the chapters

in the operating instructions for the crane type, which refer to the
functioning and operation of the SLI.

Instructions for use for these operating instructions

The following definitions and symbols are used in these operating

instructions to highlight particularly important information:

This symbol indicates hazards related to the described operation

that may cause personal injury. The type of hazard (e.g. mortal
danger, personal injury, risk of crushing or electrocution) generally
precedes the warning sign.

Here you are alerted to hazards not relating to persons, like, for
example, damage to the truck crane, the load, or the environment.

The vertical line to the left of the text indicates: the warning symbols
refer to this text, regardless of its length.

The hand with the pointing finger indicates passages that contain
additional instructions and tips with regard to truck crane operation.

Functional description of the Safe Load Indicator (SLI)

The SLI only affords protection for one-hook operation.

Danger of overturning with two-hook operation!

The safe load indicator only affords protection for one-hook
operation!
Two-hook operation is not protected by the SLI!

The safe load indicator serves to prevent the permissible load

bearing capacity of the truck crane from being exceeded at a
particular radius. The load bearing limit can be exceeded, for
example, during crane operation when the main boom is extended
or lowered further than first intended.

The safe load indicator is an electronic unit.

It is used to set the truck crane’s configuration.

EKS3 Operating 1-1

Instructions
Grove Training Institute GMK Operator Training

Danger of overturning if wrong settings are entered into the

SLI!
The SLI does not automatically collect all information required to
calculate the load limit.
You must therefore manually enter the configuration (SLI code) and
the reeving mode at the SLI control unit.

Sensors are attached to the truck crane which supplies the central
electronics with the instantaneous load status. The current and
maximum possible load values are continuously displayed on the
SLI control unit in the crane cab. Before reaching the load limit, the
SLI emits a visual and an acoustic (intermittent buzzer tone) signal
to alert you that the warning limit has been reached. The acoustic
signal can be switched off.

If the load limit is reached and the load moment continues to

increase, the SLI shuts down all movements which increase the
load moment and alerts you that the shut-down limit has been
reached by emitting a visual and acoustic (continuous buzzer tone)
signal. The acoustic signal can be switched off.

The values required to operate the truck crane are continually

displayed on the SLI (e. g. radius, actual load, boom length,
maximum load).

Accidents may occur if the SLI is set wrongly!

If the proper SLI code is not entered, the maximum load calculated
by the SLI does not correspond with the actual permissible load
capacity! An incorrectly set safe load indicator only gives you a
false sense of security. The consequences will be overloading and
an accident!

Setting rigging mode

There are ways of setting the rigging mode on the SLI:

- using the SLI code

- using individual components

Setting using the SLI code

When setting the rigging mode using the SLI code, enter the SLI
code for the rigging mode according to the Lifting capacity table
and the reeving mode. The SLI code is entered in the Rigging
mode status display. After entry the SLI indicates the required
rigging mode on the various status displays.
The reeving is entered in the Reeving status display.

There is a risk of accidents if the rigging mode is set

incorrectly.

The actual rigging mode must agree with the rigging mode
displayed on the SLI. Compare the displayed rigging mode with the
actual rigging mode; (Checks before working with the crane, p. 4 -
13.) In this way you prevent the SLI from incorrectly calculating the
permitted load causing the truck crane to be overloaded and
overturn.

If you enter an SLI code which does not exist in the lifting capacity
table, (Incorrect entry, p. 4 - 6.)

Setting using individual components

The individual components for the current rigging mode are:

- outrigger span,
- counterweight,
- length of lattice extension,
- lattice extension angle,
- permitted slewing range and
-reeving.

EKS3 Operating 4-4

Instructions
Grove Training Institute GMK Operator Training
You can set the values for the individual components directly using
the membrane switches on the corresponding status display. Here
you can select the respective values which are permitted according
to the Lifting capacity table.
After setting the SLI code for the recently set rigging mode is
displayed in the Rigging mode display.

Danger of overturning due to incorrectly set rigging mode!

The actual rigging mode must agree with the rigging mode
displayed on the SLI.
When the individual components are selected, values which have
already been set can change again. After setting the last
components compare the displayed rigging mode with the actual
rigging mode; Checks before working with the crane, p. 4 - 16.
In this way you prevent the SLI from incorrectly calculating the
permitted load causing the truck crane to be overloaded and
overturn.

Sequence during setting

The setting sequence is the same for all status displays. There are
only differences when the status displays are selected and the
values entered directly.

1. Select the desired status display ( Selection, p. 4 - 7).

2. Enter the new value ( Enter values, p. 4 - 9).

3. Confirming the entry ( Confirming the entry, p. 4- 14).

4. Accepting the new value in the SLI processor (Accept, p. 4 - 14).

When the correct values are already displayed (e. g. after a brief
period of the diesel engine not running), the following procedure is
recommended:

1. Select the desired status display ( Selection, p. 4 - 7).

2. Accept the unchanged value in the SLI processor (Accept, p. 4-

14).

EKS3 Operating 4-5

Instructions
Grove Training Institute GMK Operator Training
General instructions

Error messages may be issued when you are selecting the

desired status display and entering values. The reason for this is
that the SLI processor constantly checks the correctness of all
values in the active status displays. However, since incomplete
entries are not correct, for example, the input of the first digit of a
value can cause an error message to be issued.

The error triggers an acoustic signal, an error message is

displayed in the Information status display, the red warning lamp
in the Error information membrane switch lights up and the SLI
shutdown warning lamp illuminates.

After you have read the error message, you can cancel the
acoustic signal, error message and warning lamp by pressing the
Acknowledge membrane switch.

If there are several error messages, the various messages

constantly change in the status display so that all of the messages
can be read at all times.

When entering values into the Rigging mode status display, the
information status display automatically switches to the display of
the permitted slewing range and the green indicator lamp in the
Permitted slewing range membrane switch illuminates.

If error messages now occur, you will be able to recognize this by

the acoustic signal and the red warning lamp in the Error
information membrane switch. You can look at these error
messages in the Information status display by pressing this
membrane switch.

If you enter an SLI code in the Rigging mode status display which
does not exist in the lifting capacity table, the SLI will select the
closest SLI code and display the corresponding individual
components. An error message will also appear on the SLI.

Components which have already been set can change when an

incorrect entry is made.

EKS3 Operating 4-6

Instructions
Grove Training Institute GMK Operator Training

Danger of overturning due to incorrectly set rigging model

After acknowledging the error message always compare the SLI
code which appears in the Rigging mode status display with the SLI
code which is provided in the lifting capacity table for the actual
rigging mode. If the SLI changes the components which have
already been set for the reasons mentioned above, the SLI codes
will not coincide and the settings have to be corrected.
This prevents the SLI making calculations with incorrectly set
components causing the truck crane to overturn during operation.

Select status display

If you have switched on the SLI using the ignition, you can select
the status displays in various ways.

• Press and hold down the Input confirmation membrane switch.

• After approx. one second, briefly press the membrane switch

beside the desired status display.

• Now release the in put confirmation membrane switch.

If the SLI was switched off for longer than approx. 12 hours, the
digits 00 and the signaling point of the selected status display now
flash (example here reeving).

The numerical value now flashes if a valid value was displayed

before selection.

Direct input via the numerical pad allows you to input digits in
succession from left to right. Zeros must be input in front of the
digits but these are not displayed (exception: when in rigging
mode). The double reeving is entered as 0 2, for example.

The desired status display must be selected before the following

processes; Selecting status display, p. 4 - 7.

• Briefly press any membrane switch on the numerical pad.

The digit and the cursor appear alternately in the status display in
the first position on the left. The cursor is displayed as a line on the
basic line.
(Exception:
- The cursor appears on its own if no digit is displayed at this
position.
- If a zero is entered in the Reeving status display, then this is not
indicated.)

• Press the membrane switch with the desired number on the

numerical pad.

The desired digit appears instead of the cursor.

At the same time, the cursor moves one place to the right.

The signaling point also appears if you have changed the old
value in the status display by inputting the digits.

• Continue with the entry for the next position. Press the
appropriate membrane switch on the numerical pad.

The digit selected appears in the position. At the same time, the
cursor moves one place to the right.

The cursor always jumps to the first position on the left after the

Confirming the input

• Press the Input confirmation membrane switch for one second.

The number values in the Reeving and Rigging mode do not flash
anymore. The signaling point at the right edge of both status
displays appears or lights up.

Once you have confirmed the entry the entered value can be
accepted in the SLI.

Accept

You can only accept the values on the Reeving and Rigging mode
status displays. Changes in the other displays are accepted along
with the Rigging mode status display (example at the end of this
section).

• Press the membrane switch next to the changed Reeving or

Rigging mode status display for longer than 0.5 seconds.

You can accept the reeving mode and SLI code simultaneously by
pressing both membrane switches at the same time.

When the signaling point goes out; the new value has been
accepted by the SLI.

If one of the two settings, Reeving or Rigging mode (SLI code), was
incorrectly input, the appropriate signaling point continues to
illuminate after the membrane key has been pressed and an error
message is issued (e. g. with an obviously incorrect value such as
reeving mode: 9 9).

When there are no more error messages and you have already
acknowledged all of the error messages which were issued, the SLI
shutdown warning lamp also goes out after you press the
membrane switch and you can now work with the truck crane.

Example for acceptance of the values in other status
displays:

Let us presume you have rigged a new counterweight version and

want to set the SLI accordingly.

• Select the newly rigged counterweight version in the

Counterweight status display using the membrane switch.

The SLI code for the rigging mode with the new counterweight
automatically appears in the Rigging mode status display.

• Press the membrane switch in the Rigging mode status display

for longer than 0.5 seconds.

The signaling point in the status display goes out and the new SLI
code is accepted along with the new counterweight version.

If you have changed several rigging components (e. g. the

supporting span and the length of lattice extension as well), then
these values are accepted at the same time as the new SLI code.

Confirming a change

Once the reeving and rigging mode (SLI code) have been entered,
confirmed and accepted, neither the signaling points in both
displays nor the SLI shutdown warning lamp should be illuminated.
If the SLI shutdown warning lamp is still illuminating due to an
error message caused by the input of a new value, you can simply
acknowledge this message.

• Press the Acknowledge membrane switch.

The SLI shutdown warning lamp goes out after you press the
Acknowledge membrane switch.

If one of the two settings, Reeving or Rigging mode (SLI code),

was incorrectly input, the SLI shutdown warning lamp continues to
light after the Acknowledge membrane switch has been pressed.
Check whether the signaling point is lit up on either of the two
displays. If this is not the case, check the setting and repeat the
entry if necessary.

Checks before working with the crane

Risk of accidents if SLI is incorrectly set!

If the actual rigging mode and the rigging mode indicated by the SLI
are not the same, the permissible load calculated by the SLI is not
the actual permissible load. The consequences will be overloading
and an accident. The valid SLI codes can be found in the lifting
capacity table.

• Check whether the rigging mode displayed by the SLI is the same
as the actual rigging mode.
Check
- reeving of the hook block,
- the mounted counterweight mass,
- the span and if necessary
- the length of lattice extension,
- the angle of lattice extension,
- which hoist is switched on (only with auxiliary hoist additional
equipment)

• Check the functioning of all SLI display, warning and indicator

lamps by briefly pressing the Lamp test and SLI display dimmer
rocker switch down.

The rigging mode displayed by the SLI and the actual rigging mode
must always be the same. If not, the SLI is set incorrectly.

On the Hoist position lights the lamp for the hoist which is
monitored by the SLI during operation illuminates.
Lamp I = main hoist
Lamp II = auxiliary hoist (additional equipment only

The number of reeved rope lines for the hoist indicated by the Hoist
position lights is shown in the Reeving status display.

Functional description of the display and operating instruments.

If a selector key is which has no function assigned to it is pressed,

the value in the Information display does not change and the
green indicator lamp in the key does not light up.

If the actual load amounts to approximately 90% (depending on the

regulations of the country in question) of the maximum permissible
load or more, the SLI early warning lamp lights up. The intermittent
buzzer tone sounds at the same time.

• Press the Acknowledge key to switch off the buzzer tone.

The load is shown in the Degree of utilization display. The green

and yellow LED’s light up.

The SLI is shut down when 100% of the maximum permissible load
has been exceeded (overload) or when an error occurs (Error
message in this section, p. 4 - 21).

If the SLI shuts down,

- all crane movements which increase the load moment are shut
down,

- the SLI shutdown warning lamps light up,

- the continuous buzzer tone sounds.

Shutdowns resulting from overloading and shutdowns resulting

from error messages are displayed in different ways.
A shutdown resulting from overloading can be recognized by the
fact that in addition to the messages mentioned above

- the signaling point lights up in the Maximum load display and

- the red LED’s light up in the Degree of utilization display.

When shutdowns occur as a result of an error, the red warning

lamp in the Error information membrane key also lights up (Error
messages in this section, p. 4 - 21).

If you would like to switch off the continuous buzzer tone:

• Press the Acknowledge membrane key.

For shutdowns caused by overloading, you can cancel the

shutdown by leaving the shutdown area. You may then only
perform the crane operations listed in the following table.

Retraction of the telescoping should be avoided if possible, as the

SLI switches to another load bearing capacity range depending on
to the telescope status.

The main boom may buckle when retracted!

You should avoid retracting when there is an SLI shutdown! When
retracting the boom, the SLI switches to another lifting capacity
range, depending on the telescoping status (e. g. from fixed length
to intermediate length). A load can then become an overload. There
will then be no new (further or other) SLI shutdown. Only leave the
shutdown area by raising or putting down the load. Further
retraction is only allowed once you are working in a range with
sufficient lifting capacity.

If you have not already switched off the buzzer tone, you must
press the Acknowledge membrane after leaving the shutdown area
in order to reverse the shutdown.

The SLI shutdown warning lamp goes out after you leave the
shutdown area.

The SLI has shut down. Shutdown resulting from an error is

displayed by means of the red warning lamp in the Error
information membrane key.

The code for the error is indicated in the Error Information display
after you have pressed the membrane key. Errors and counter
measures are listed in the table at the end of this section.

Risk of accidents!
You must stop crane operation as soon as an error message
occurs! Repairs to the SLI may only be carried out by properly
qualified personnel.

• Press the Error information membrane key.

One or more error codes appear in the Information display.

The error codes are displayed in quick succession if there are

several errors.

• Press and hold down the Error information membrane key.

The display goes through the error codes more slowly now (at
intervals of approximately 1 second) and displays these error
codes in succession.

If the Error information membrane key is pressed when there is no

error message, minus signs (—) appear in all positions in the
Information display.

SLI override

Risk of accidents when SLI is overridden!

The SLI may not be overridden while the cane is being operated. It
is prohibited to operate the crane if the safe load indicator is
switched off, overridden, out of operation or defective!

You may only override the SLI when carrying out maintenance or
rigging work in accordance with the Operating Instructions. In such
cases, the SLI may only be overridden when there is no load on the
hook.

Risk of accidents when the SLI is defective!

You may override the SLI if it is defective. Always put down the
load immediately if the SLI is defective. If there is still a load on the
hook, do not make any more movements which increase the load
moment (extending the telescoping, lowering the boom).

The SLI can be overridden (shut down) using the SLI override key
switch.

• Insert the key into the key switch.

• Turn the key to the right.

• Hold the key in this position.

The SLI is overridden as long as you hold the key in this position.

Always remove the key from the SLI override key switch after
overriding! The key must not be left in the key switch while the
crane is in operation!

The lifting limit switch is deactivated when the safe load indicator is
overridden.
