TELECOMMUNICATION SWITCHING AND TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS


Course addresses key issues in transmission and switching systems.
More emphasis is on transmission media, multiplexing systems, switching
and associated signaling technique.
Learning outcome

 Distinguish different transmission media and their capacities


 Understand multiplexing systems
 Demonstrate signaling systems
 Elaborate the role of switching systems
Course content

 Basic concepts of a transmission system: elements of a transmission


system, spectra requirement
 Characteristics of transmission media: copper cables, optical fibres and
radio channels.
 Digital transmission: optical fibre systems, modulation and coding for
radio systems – including channel error control and multiple access
techniques.
 Multiplexing and multiplexing systems: FDM, TDM, PDH, SDH, SONET 112
 Switching and signalling: elements of a switching system, analogue and
digital switches, signalling techniques, SS7
 Transmission equipments: Modems, Terminal Multiplexers, Add/Drop
Multiplexers, Digital Cross-Connect Systems, Regenerators or
Intermediate Repeaters, Optical Line Systems, WDM, Optical Amplifiers,
Microwave Relay Systems

Mode of delivery

One two hour lecture per week ( Mondays 8am-10am LRB 102)
One hour tutorial session per week
One hour practical session
Mode of assessment

Single assignment worth 10 marks, to be given towards end of the


course
Two tests worth 15 marks each…test one on the seventh week and test
two on the thirteenth week

University Examination worth 60% of total grade

Lectures have officially started on the second week
