II. Scope of the Test: To let the students become acquainted with the material testing laboratory, the
equipment available, and requirements of the course.

a. Apparatus (with definition or use)
1. Universal Testing Machine (UTM) - is used to test both the tensile and compressive
strength of materials.
2. Los Angeles Abrasion Machine- used for determination of the aggregates’ resistance to
fragmentation.
3. Mechanical Shaker- used for separation and size determination of particles. A typical sieve
shaker separates particles by passing them through a series of chambers with mesh filters and
agitating the sample in order to obtain complete separation.
4. Oven Drier and Hot Plates: Oven Dryer- used in laboratory or industrial settings for a
variety of tasks including evaporation, sterilization, temperature testing, and for incubating
temperature sensitive experiments.
Hot plates- is flat surfaced device used for controlled the
heating directly or using the hot plate to create a heat bath
5. Set Sieves- is the result of fitting each sieve to Sieve Stack be used in a given particle size
analysis into the one above. The sieve with the largest mesh holes is at the top with each
subsequent sieve of a tighter mesh size than the one above it.
6. Digital Balance and Triple Beam Balance:
Digital Balance- use to quickly and accurately measure the mass of a substance to
a level of accuracy impossible for traditional balances to achieve.
Triple Beam Balance- measures the mass and not the weight of an object. Unlike
the traditional spring balance which measures weight, the triple beam balance doesn’t rely on
gravitational force.
7. Water Trough or Bucket - used for containing water when collecting gases.
8. Graduated Cylinder- is a kind of laboratory apparatus that does such a job which measures
reactant substances accurately.
9. Wire Basket- in laboratory can be used for disinfection sterilization, ultrasonic cleaning,
the operation instruments, medical instruments into the tray with cleaning, disinfection,
sterilization.
10. Tin Can and Tamping Rod:
Tin Can- a container for the distribution or storage of goods, made of thin metal.
Many cans require opening by cutting the "end" open; others have removable covers. Cans
hold diverse contents: food, beverages, oil, chemicals, etc. Steel cans are made of tinplate
(tin-coated steel) or of tin-free steel. In some dialects, even aluminum cans are called "tin
cans"
Tamping Rod- a round, straight steel rod used with concrete cylinder molds,
slump cones, and unit weight tests. Measures 5/8" diameter by 24" length. Both ends are
rounded to a hemispherical tip. The tamping rod is plated for rust resistance and has a 6"
scale in 1/4" increments engraved on end of the rod for measuring the slump.
11. Vicat Apparatus and Rubber Mold:
 Vicat Apparatus- is used to determine consistency and time of set of cement
paste and other similar materials
Rubber Mold- used to contain the cement paste sample
12. Slump Cone Apparatus- measure the workability of a fresh concrete mix in accordance
with applicable ASTM and AASHTO standards.
13. Concrete Mixing Board- a masonry tool used as a platform when mixing materials such
as sand and cement. For instance, mixing boards are often used when making mortar using
specific amounts of sand, cement, plasticiser and water
14. Concrete Curing Tank- is used for curing of cement, concrete cubes or other mortar
specimens. It can be used for curing cement specimens within the mould, or after removing
from the mould.
15. Shovel- a tool used to dig as well as to move loose, granular materials (like dirt, gravel,
grain, or snow) from one spot to another
16. Measuring Stick or Ruler- used for measuring a line, and the straight edge allows them to
be used for drawing, scoring, or cutting.
17. Hack Saw- metal-framed saw used primarily for cutting plastic and metal pipes and other
small household materials.
