How to Use the Document Converter
Introduction

This section of the manual describes the functionality of the Install Time Document
Converter and the File / Open dialog document converter for Print Artist™ 6.0. The
document converters allow users of Print Artist™ 4.0, 4.5 and CardsPlus access to their
user created documents through 6.0. This is done in one of two ways:

1 The Install Time document conversion

2 File / Open dialog to access user created project types.

The user created documents types that require your conversion are Print Artist™
4.0/4.5 Signs, CardsPlus Gift Sets and CardsPlus Party Sets.

Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 Signs will be converted to Print Artist™ 6.0 Signs
and Banners.

CardsPlus Gift Sets will be converted to Print Artist™ 6.0 Crafts.

CardsPlus Party Sets will be converted to Print Artist™ 6.0 Crafts.

Install Time Document Converter

The “Install Time Document Converter” will be launched during the installation of the
Print Artist™ 6.0 product.

You may also access this at a later time by going to the START button/ Program/ Sierra/
PA6.0/ Convert Previous PA Layout to 6.0.

You will be prompted to enter a Source Folder and a Destination Folder. The Source
Folder will be the folder where the user has Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 or CardsPlus
documents. The Destination Folder will be the folder to which the converted documents
are copied. The Source Folder must be different than the Destination Folder.

12
By selecting the check box, all user created documents found in the Source Folder will

Introduction
be copied to the Destination Folder, even if they do not require converting. This will
allow you easy access to all of your documents from within PA 6.0, regardless of what
version they were created in.

Clicking on the Browse button will display a dialog allowing you to select a Source or
Destination Folder (depending on which Browse button was clicked).

13
The default directory for layouts is in the specific Print Artist folder. For Example, to
Introduction

convert documents from Print Artist 4.5 to Print Artist™ 6.0 from the default directories
you would select the Source folder as C:\Sierra\PA45 and the Destination folder as
C:\Sierra\PA6 to convert and/or copy those files from your Print Artist™ 4.5 directory
into your Print Artist™ 6.0 directory.

Clicking on the Convert Documents button will convert all documents found in the
Source Folder and place them into the Destination Folder. The number of converted
documents will be displayed next to the Signs Converted, and Gift Sets and Party Sets
Converted. If the check box is selected, all documents found in the Source Folder will
be copied to the Destination Folder. The number of documents copied will be displayed
as “Other Documents Copied.”

The application will detect if a document has already been converted. When this
happens, a dialog will be displayed prompting you for an action to take.

Clicking on Yes will convert the document again, creating another file with a different
name in the Destination Folder. For example, converting Placemt1.pts a second time
would create Placem~1.crf. If the application detects another file that has previously
been converted, you will be prompted again for which action to take.

Clicking on “Yes to all” will convert all documents previously converted again. If the
application detects another file that has previously been converted, that document will
be converted again without prompting the user.

Clicking on “No” will not convert the document again. If the application detects another
file that has previously been converted, the user will be prompted again for which action
to take.
14
Clicking on “No to all” will not convert the document again. If the application detects

Introduction
another file that has previously been converted, the document will not be converted
without prompting the user.

Clicking on “Cancel” will stop the conversion process.

File / Open Dialog Document Converter

The File / Open Dialog Document Converter allows you to access Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5
and CardsPlus documents via the File / Open dialog. To do this, click My Documents
from the project splash screen or Open My Documents from the File menu. The List
Files of Type drop down list box contains three file types that allow you to convert and
open old document types.

These three file types are:

PA 4.0, 4.5 Sign

CardsPlus Party Set

CardsPlus Gift Set

15
For example, you could select the CardsPlus Party Set from the file type drop down list
Introduction

box and if the directory that was selected contained CardsPlus Party Set documents,
their names would be displayed in the list box. No preview is available for these
document types.

The following message box will be displayed when you click on OK.

If a document has been previously converted, the following message box will be
displayed:

16
What if there are Missing Graphics?

Introduction
Once the converted document is opened in Print Artist™ 6.0, you may notice that some
graphics are not displayed. Instead, a blue square with an X in it is displayed. This
occurs when the document includes a graphic that is not available in Print Artist™ 6.0.
In order to view the graphic, you must import the graphic files that are used in either
Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 or CardsPlus (depending on which application the document was
created with). For example, if a Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 Sign document was converted to
a Print Artist™ 6.0 banner and some graphics are missing, you would need to import
the appropriate Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 graphics for use with Print Artist™ 6.0.

Select Import from the File menu and select the directory where the Print Artist™
4.0/4.5 graphics exist. Select one or more files from the Document Names list box.
You may select multiple files by pressing the CTRL or SHIFT key and clicking on a file
name with the mouse. Click on OK and Print Artist™ 6.0 will update the Graphics
Grabber information. Close the document with the missing graphic and then reopen it.
Your missing graphic should be displayed if the graphic file was imported.

You may also add the Graphic Directory that contains your missing graphics by using
the Graphic Directory Setup from the File menu and selecting Add. Please reference the
Graphic Directory Setup section of the manual for more detailed instructions.

Please note: Print Artist™ 4.0/4.5 or CardsPlus must be currently installed on your
computer to import graphics.

When you click on the “MY DOCUMENTS” button, your

documents will be organized by Project Type.

Ready...Set...Create!
Starting a New Project

After you’ve installed Print Artist™ 6.0, the opening screen will display all the project
choices available. Each Project type has a sub-directory so you can choose precisely the
project you wish. Simply click on the desired project, and begin creating. See the
instructions in this guide for saving your project in progress or your completed
document.

Creating a New Document

You Can Create a Project in any one of four ways

1 Create your own document from scratch using a “blank.”

2 Begin with a template, which is a special kind of blank containing guide
frames.

3 Begin with one of the premade layouts from Print Artist™ 6.0 which you can
easily modify for your own needs.

4 Begin with a document you created earlier and saved. Note: Select “Open
Copy” if you would like to keep your previously saved document unchanged.

33
First open the Projects screen by one of the following ways:
My Documents

1 Opening the program will start with the Projects screen.

2 Clicking on the “Change Project Type” button in the Toolbar.
3 Select Projects...from the File menu.

To Choose a Project:
Ready...Set...Create!

1 Click on the Project Icon button of the desired project type or

2 Use TAB key to scroll through project types and press ENTER key when
desired project type is highlighted.

Note: Greeting Cards and Stationery have an intermediate screen that asks you to choose
a specific card occasion or stationery type. Once you have done this, you will see the
appropriate dialog box. Next, decide whether you want to work with a blank or a template
(or in the case for greeting cards, fold pattern). Then click to highlight Blank, Template,
or the category from which you wish to choose a layout.

If you wish to close your current document and open another in the same project type,
choose New (project type)... from the File menu, Press Ctrl+N, or Click on the “Create a
New Project” button. This returns you to the Select New (project type) screen. To open a
different project type from the Workspace (Desktop) screen, choose Projects... from the
File menu or Click on the “Change Project Type” button in the Toolbar.

Opening Saved Documents

You can access your documents with the “Open an Existing Document” button, or select
“My Documents” from the File menu.

To open a saved document from the MY DOCUMENTS section or the

files, the types of files, and directory list.

3 Select the type of Document by choosing it from the pull down menu for
“List Files of Type.”

4 Highlight descriptive name and click OK or press Enter key.

Saving a Document

Ready...Set...Create!
There are two ways to save a document. The first is to save something that’s just been
created (a new Document), and give it a name. Choose names that are descriptive and
easily recognizable so that when you open your work again, you will be able to easily
access documents, such as one you may have done months ago. Second, you can also
use Save As to save your work to a different existing directory or as a different name
so it doesn’t overwrite your original document.

To Save a Document
1 Choose the Save or Save As command from the File menu (or use the
Keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + S or F12).

2 Type in a descriptive name of up to 32 characters (including spaces) and

press ENTER (or you can tab down to File name and type in your own DOS
name.)

3 Print Artist™ 6.0 will make up a DOS file name based on the descriptive
name. The name will be based on DOS rules, such as no quotation marks,
no asterisks, 8 character limit, etc.

Saving an Existing Project, Renaming a Project

Sometimes you need to save a project under a different name. For example, say you
designed a birthday card you really like for a five year old boy. Your child is going to
another birthday party soon for another child, and you want to reuse the same design
with the new name. Open the birthday card you created, and use the Save As command
to save under a new name. Or, you can use the Open Copy command to open a copy of
the card without changing your original card.
Ready...Set...Create!

To Save as or Rename a Project:

1 Choose the Save As from the File menu or use the keyboard shortcut
(F12 key).

2 Highlight the name you wish to change.

3 Type the new name and click Save or press RETURN or ENTER.

Note: You must ENTER a new DOS filename to save the document as a new document,
or you will write over your original project. Changing the descriptive name only will
not create a new file in your Print Artist™ 6.0 subdirectory.

To Change the File Location:

1 Click the arrow beside the Drives List to display a list of available drives.
2 Select the desired drive from among those listed.
3 Click in the Directories List and use the arrows to move through those
listed.

4 Select the desired directory from the list by double-clicking it or pressing

ENTER.

5 Confirm your choice by clicking OK or pressing ENTER.

36
Deleting Saved Projects

My Documents
To Delete Saved Projects:
1 Open the File menu and choose Delete Files. This will open the Delete Files
dialog box. The Delete Files dialog box will automatically open with any
documents you have saved in the current document type box (i.e., Greeting
Cards) listed.

Ready...Set...Create
2 If you wish to delete a file from another document type, click the down
arrow next to the box displaying the current document type to display a
drop-down list of files by type. Then click to choose the desired document
type.

3 If your document is stored on another drive, click the arrow to pull down
the Drives List and choose the correct drive. If they are stored in another
directory, click the Directories List to choose the correct one.

Working 8
Working

Your Creative Capabilities

There are several important maneuvering tools you will master while using Print
Artist™ 6.0. Most of the skill is acquired through practice, but here is a guide to
explain the key functions of the program.
Your Creative Capabilities

Frames and Functions – Resizing Graphics

The frame is an essential feature of Print Artist™ 6.0. Mastering this tool means you’ve
mastered both text and graphic manipulation and layout. Every object is surrounded by a
frame.

To activate a frame, click anywhere within the frame. You can activate each succeeding
frame, one at a time, by pressing the TAB key.

Tab through the desired object. Then move the cursor over the frame until the desired
cursor shape appears. The shape of the cursor tells you what command it is prepared to
execute.

38
Grab handles are the small boxes attached to the lines of the frame. Each grab handle

Working
has a function. To move, resize, rotate or skew an object (text or a graphic), grab one of
the appropriate handles with your mouse and drag it. Releasing the mouse button will
end the action.

Corner Resizing Arrow

The corner resizing arrow allows you to change the height and width of the frame. To
keep the correct proportions of text, fills and basic shapes inserted from the Object
menu, press Shift while resizing or use the center button of a three-button mouse.

Your Creative Capabilities

Moving Function
When you want to move an entire frame, Print Artist™ 6.0 will give you a HAND! A
hand cursor indicates the Moving Function. This allows you to drag or move the active
frame around the document and onto the Desktop. Nothing within the frame changes
when it’s moved this way. For most resizing and moving functions, you must grab the
frame before pressing the Shift or Ctrl keys to activate a frame. To keep the frame on a
horizontal or vertical line, simply press the Shift key while moving the frame. The best
way to move a frame is to grab the center handle of the frame by moving the cursor
over the center handle. The frame can be moved when the cursor changes to a hand.

Shrink-to-Fit
This command is in the Object menu. This feature allows you to automatically “fit” the
frame to the borders of selected graphics or text.

Vertical Resizing Arrow

This arrow allows you to increase or decrease the height of the frame while keeping the
width constant. Pressing the Shift key or using the center button of a three-button mouse
while executing this function will constrain the change in frame height to specific incre-
ments (8 points) on an invisible grid.

39
Horizontal Resizing Arrow
Working

This arrow allows you to increase or decrease the width of the frame while keeping its
height constant. Pressing Shift or using the center button of a three-button mouse while
executing this function will constrain the change in horizontal orientation to specific
increments (8 points) on an invisible grid.

Resizing Around the Center

When you have centered an object on the document and want to resize it without having
Your Creative Capabilities

to re-center it, this is a useful grab handle. Press the Alt key while resizing, or choose
Resize around Center from the View menu to use this option. Ctrl + up or down arrow
keys will resize the object around the center, bigger or smaller.

Rotation
To tilt the frame from any angle, use the Rotation grab handle. The contents of the
frame are not altered, only their angle. The frame rotates around its own center, not the
center of the document. The handle in the center of the frame shows the center for the
rotation for that frame. Pressing Shift while executing this function constrains rotation to
15º increments. Also, Ctrl + left or right arrow keys will rotate the object.

Skewing
Skewing “bends” your text or graphic to the side. As with rotating, pressing Shift will
skew to 15º increments.

Skewing cannot be previewed on the screen, so you may make a change you didn’t
intend. If that’s the case, choose Undo from the Edit menu, or Ctrl + Z immediately
after skewing (don’t save!!). This will allow you to manually return the skewed object
to its original orientation. If you did save, the Revert command in the File menu takes
you back to the last saved version of the document, and can be used to correct skews.

40
Snap to Grid and Precision Placement

Working
There are two ways to work with the objects in your document. Normally, Print Artist™
6.0 allows you to move your objects freely. Sometimes, though, you may want your
objects to align themselves automatically on an invisible “grid” on the document.
Choose Snap to Grid under the View menu to align objects in 1/8” increments on this
grid. Of course, the “grid” will not show up when you print.

Wire Frame Preview

Your Creative Capabilities

You can toggle this command on and off under the View menu. Wire Frame Preview is
helpful when you’re working with many objects. This shows all of the objects as out-
lined frames only. These “wire frames” look the same on your screen as the blank guide
frames in Templates.

As you begin to work with more complex graphics using many layers and elements,
Wire Frame Preview helps you organize and preview your document’s layout. It also
helps to grab small or hard-to-grab frames. Press the TAB key to go from frame to
frame quickly and easily.

Working with Overlapping Frames

Use the TAB key to move through the frames until you activate the one you want; only
manipulate the frame with the cursor when the correct cursor type is showing, ie. hand
to move or arrows. You can manipulate an underlying frame only when the active cursor
is showing (when the cursor is over frame handles).

41
Linking and Grouping Functions
Working

You will need to learn how to link frames when copying or pasting a collection of
graphic elements from one project to another. Linking frames allows you to work with
many separate frames as one, while still allowing you to change objects within the sepa-
rate frames if necessary (by unlinking). Linked frames are different from grouped
frames; linked frames are still treated as separate objects and not as a group. Each frame
will still rotate, skew and resize around its own center, not the center of the linked
frames.

Here are three ways you can link frames:

Your Creative Capabilities

1 Choose one of the four Select All commands from the Edit menu.
2 Press Shift while you click each object you want to select.
3 Draw a box around the objects (“marquee select”). Imagine the size of the
box that would include all the objects. Position the pointer at one of the
corners of this box and press the left mouse button while dragging the
pointer diagonally across the screen. Drag until you have included all the
items in the box.The box needs to be big enough to include every part of
each frame you want to link. Once it’s big enough, release the mouse button.
You’ll see the outlined frames on the screen.

Grouping Frames
With this function, the center of the group of linked frames becomes the center. This
allows you to resize and rotate groups of objects while maintaining their relationship
with one another. To group objects, link desired frames then go to Object menu and
select Group from the pull-down menu. With both Linking and Grouping, practice each
technique to investigate how the frames react differently to these commands.

Unlinking Frames
Here are three ways to unlink frames:

1 To unlink all frames at once, click once anywhere in your document (except
within a frame) or on the Desktop.

42
2 Go to Object menu and select Ungroup from the pull-down menu or click

Working
Ctrl+U for grouped frames.

3 Press Shift while you click once with the left mouse button on the frame(s)
you want to unlink.

Left: Unlinked “HELLO” graphics.

Right: Linked “HELLO” graphics.

Exporting to Other Documents

To export to another document, first make the graphic active in your document. Choose
Export from the File menu. A dialog box opens for you to give the graphic a file name.
Specify the format in which you want the graphic exported. You must also indicate to
which directory you will export.

43
These are the following formats Print Artist™ 6.0 allows for
Working

exporting:

.bmp (bitmap) .eps (encapsulated postscript) .wmf (Windows Metafile)

Cutting and Pasting

Cut and Paste can also be used for importing or exporting text or graphics. Since Cut
and Paste functions are standard in Windows, you may want to use these functions to
import graphics and text from other Windows applications. For example, you’ve typed
up some text for a birthday party invitation. Copy the text from that application, and
Your Creative Capabilities

paste it into your Print Artist™ 6.0 document.

Rulers
On-screen rulers can be very helpful when working on a project. To use a ruler, choose
Rulers from the View menu.

Palettes

Palettes are organized groups of tools available for you to use in Print Artist™ 6.0. In
this program, the palettes are sub-menus from the standard Windows menus. These
palettes include Effects, Fonts, Colors and Shapes. You can keep these palettes
displayed on your screen while you’re working on a document for quick access to the
various characteristics you wish to provide your document. Like an artist at an easel,
your palettes keep your artistic tools readily available. To open a Palette...select it from
the Toolbar or appropriate Menu dropdown list.

When you move a Palette, Print Artist™ 6.0 saves your Palette placements if you check
Save Palette placement in the View menu.

The Customize Color dialog box
The Customize Color dialog box allows you to completely control the colors of the
selected graphic or text object.

To change a color, select a surface from the Surface List. Then click on a color in the
color palette. You will see the selected surface change instantly to the new color. You
will also see the name of the color below the color palette.
The Blend button is useful for coloring multiple surfaces. For some graphics and text
45
effects, the Surface List includes several surfaces that are consecutively numbered. If
Working

you select a color for the first numbered surface and another color for the last numbered
surface, then when you click on Blend, intermediate colors will instantly be assigned to
intermediate surfaces. For objects to which effects have been applied, the Blend option
generates a gradation of colors between the first and last layers, shades, outlines, faces,
or strata in the object. There must be a logical path between the chosen colors for
Print Artist™ 6.0 to perform this function. If there is no path, the Blend button will be
grayed out. The original white and original black surfaces in graphics are not affected
by this option.
Your Creative Capabilities

Clicking Reverse will take all the colors currently coloring certain surfaces
and apply them to the surfaces in reverse order.

Clicking Rotate will take all the colors currently coloring certain surfaces
and rotate them through those surfaces.

Clicking Invert will change the color of each surface to its complementary
color.

Clicking Lighten will lighten the color of each surface. Colors can be
lightened several times.

Clicking Mono will change each color to a shade of gray.

Clicking Revert will change all the colors back to what they were when
you first entered the Customize Color dialog box.

46
The Color palette

Working
The Color palette is different from the Color menu in Print
Artist™ 6.0 in that it can be dragged to any part of the Desktop for quick reference any
time you need it and, if moved away from the Toolbar, it will remain open on screen
until you close it (by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the palette or by click-
ing the toggle button on the Toolbar.) Also, unlike menus, palettes have a scrolling area
where their many options are listed.

To move a palette, place the pointer in the title bar and hold down the left mouse button
while dragging the palette to the part of your screen where you want it. Print Artist 6.0

Your Creative Capabilities

will save your palette placements, even when you exit the program, unless you turn off
the Save Palette Placement function on the View menu. To activate a palette that has
been left open on screen, click anywhere in the palette.

Palettes may be opened using the More...option from the corresponding menus, or by
pushing the buttons on the Toolbar. Palettes contain all the options (except More...)
available on the menus, as well as the added choices available in the lists.

Note: Palettes left in place under the Toolbar will close once you have chosen an item
from them, just as menus do.

Graphics, Fills, Shapes, and Symbols

Graphics are fully crafted illustrations or photos. When inserting a graphic (except JPGs
or BMPs) you can assign a new frame shape, twist the shape within the frame, change
its alignment within a frame and change the color applied to its surfaces, but you cannot
actually edit anything within the frame. When you choose a graphic, only a copy of the
graphic is inserted into the project. The only option for graphics is the “flipped” effect.

47
Fill, Shape and Symbol Characteristics
Working

All fills, shapes and symbols have four components (but only some of them are visible
when a fill, shape or symbol is inserted).

Background outline
Face outline

Frame background
Your Creative Capabilities

Face

All text blocks, plain fills, basic shapes and symbols are inserted with the frame back-
ground outline. Frame background and face outline are automatically set with the color
choice set to transparent.

Fills are rectangles that are “colored in.” They are often used to fill in
white space, helping to off-set text and graphics.

Shapes are basic geometric forms that are also “colored-in.” They may be
inserted from the Insert menu as well as from the Graphics library.

Symbols are representational shapes filled in with color. You can choose

from three groups of symbols: Categories, Symbols and Nations.

48
Inserting Graphics, Fills, Shapes and Symbols

Working
All fills, shapes and symbols have default insertion colors assigned to them. You can
change these colors by choosing a color from the Color menu or Palette, or by using the
Customize Color option. You can also apply colors individually to any fill and symbol
sections. To customize colors, you sometimes must select a color from the Palette (other
than the pre-set color) before the Customize button will be active.

To insert a fill:

Your Creative Capabilities

1 The Fill command inserts a solid-colored square, which is the fill’s visible
face. All other sections are transparent.

2 The Background Fill command (Ctrl + F) inserts a fill sized to fit the
document and automatically places it behind other objects in the document.

3 The Frame command inserts a fill with the face set to transparent and the
face outline set to black.

To insert a basic shape:

1 Access the Basic Shapes directly from the Insert menu. You can also find
this category by choosing Graphic from the Insert menu and setting Basic
Shapes as the graphics category.

2 Basic shapes can also be accessed on the Toolbar. Note: Shapes can be
modified using the Effects mode.

To insert a symbol:

1 Symbols can be found in two categories in the Graphics library. The symbols
category contains items like the recycling symbol. Nation symbols are found
in the Places category.

2 Symbols can be modified using the Effects mode. Symbols can only be
“flipped” when lowercase “s” category.

To insert a new graphic:

49
Working

1 Choose Graphic from the Insert menu, or click the Graphic button on the
Toolbar. Scroll through the categories or Keywords until the desired category
is visible. Click the category name to highlight it.

2 Scroll through the Graphics list, or use the up arrow or the down arrow.
3 Click a name to highlight the graphic and display it on the preview window.
Double-click the graphic in the Preview window or its highlighted name in
the Graphics list, or press the ENTER key or click Okay to insert graphic.

To replace an existing graphic:

Your Creative Capabilities

1 Activate the frame around the unwanted graphic by selecting it, then double-
click the graphic to edit it, or select Change Graphic from Edit menu or Shift
+ Enter.

2 The Graphics Grabber™ dialog box indicates the origination of the graphic. If
you want to replace the original graphic with one from the same category,
just scroll in the graphics list and select it.

3 If you want to replace the original graphic with one from a different category,
return to the Category list and choose the category you want and then
select it from the graphics list.

4 Replacement graphics will be inserted at the same frame size and orientation
as the original graphic. Once you have inserted a graphic in a document, the
graphic’s category and its descriptive name will remain highlighted.

5 The next time you look at the Graphics Grabber™ in this session, you will
see your previous selection on the preview screen (unless you are working
with a template).

Insertion Points for Graphics, Symbols and Fills

Print Artist™ 6.0 automatically inserts all graphics, symbols and fills in the horizontal
and vertical center of the Desktop. Remember the center of your document may not be
the center of the Desktop, so if you want to insert a new object in another location, use
the View, Zoom commands or the Desktop scroll bars to change the location of the
center of the Desktop and then insert your graphic or text block.

50
Inserting Backgrounds and Borders

Working
You can insert backgrounds and borders as you do other graphics (by choosing the
Graphic command from the Insert menu). They will be inserted in the standard default
frame size. However, you can also insert them already sized to fit your entire document
by using the special Background and Border commands on the Insert menu.

Graphic Directory Setup

Your Creative Capabilities

The Graphic Directory Setup command displays the Graphic Directory Setup dialog
box, which you can use to set where Print Artist™ 6.0 searches for all of the program's
graphics.

To change a directory, first select the type of graphic for which you want to set up direc-
tories (in the Graphic Type list box). You can add multiple directories to the list of direc-
tories for each type of graphic.

The total number of graphics currently stored on your hard disk is displayed next to
Grand Total. The total number of files for the currently selected graphic type is dis-
played next to Total For Type.

51
The count of the number of graphics in a directory is displayed next to each directory
Working

path. For GFX files, the count equals the number of vector images that are contained in
the GFX files in a particular directory.

To add a directory to the list of graphics locations for the currently selected graphic
type, click Add. The Select Directory dialog box opens.

To replace an existing directory with a different directory in the list of directories for the
currently selected graphic type, click Replace. To delete a directory from the list of
directories for the currently selected graphic type, click Del. To set the directory to be

used for importing files of the current graphic type, select a directory name in the list of
directories, then click Set As Import.

System Directory Setup

The System Directory Setup command displays the System Directory Setup dialog
box. This is where you tell Print Artist™ 6.0 to search for the program’s layouts and
fonts and to store your saved documents.

To change any of the directories, click on the directory name you want to change. You
can then either type in a new directory name, or click on Browse to choose a directory
by navigating. If you click on the Count button, it will display the number of relevant
items in each directory.

52
Select Directory

Working
The Select Directory dialog lets you choose a subdirectory graphically, without typing
in the path name. This dialog box opens when you click Browse in the System Directory
Setup dialog box, or when you click Add or Replace in the Graphic Directory Setup dia-
log box.

The path name for the directory currently chosen is shown above the list box in the

Your Creative Capabilities

Select Directory dialog box. The first item listed is the drive letter. The next items are
a chain of subdirectories, which comprise the path name of the selected directory. The
items below the one at which the cursor is positioned are subdirectories of the currently
selected directory.

To change the directory, use the mouse to move up or down through the list box. Double
click to select a directory, then click OK. You will then still be in the Select Directory
dialog box, but the name of the currently selected path name (above the list box) will
have changed. You may have to repeat this process several times to get to the directory
you want. Once the directory you are looking for appears above the list box, click OK
once more to return to the Graphic Directory Setup or System Directory Setup
dialog box.

You can click CANCEL any time to go back to Graphic Directory Setup or System
Directory Setup without having changed anything.

53
How to Find Graphics
Working

To find the graphics you want to use for different projects, you should become
acquainted with the different options you have for searching. The keywords and
categories that you search for can make a big difference in how successful you are at
finding the graphics you want. You can search for graphics in Print Artist™ 6.0 using
two methods:
Your Creative Capabilities

Method 1

Use the Graphics Grabberª and select a search option:

¥ By Category
¥ By Keyword
¥ By Text Item

Method 2

Import graphics using the Import command in the File menu. Use this
method for graphics that do not come with Print Artist (e.g. from clip art
packs, digital cameras, scanners, etc.). For more information on importing,
please see ÒImporting From Other ProgramsÓ in Help.

Searching Using Keywords

1 Open the Graphics Grabber™ and click the Keywords option.Type the
description of the graphic you are looking for to see all graphics that fit that
description. Browse the results for specific graphics.

2 If you don’t find the graphic you want, enter a broader search term. For
example, if you enter the search term “Beagle” and you don’t get results,
then try using the term “Dogs”. If “Dogs” does not return any results, try
“Dogs & Cats.” Then browse the list of results for the specific graphic or
graphics you want.

54
The broadest keyword searches often find major categories of graphics, such as Animals

Working
or Sports. Sometimes these categories include the term Mixed or General, such as
People Mixed, or Advertising General.

Because broader keyword searches are similar to searching by category, you may want
to search using the Categories option (see Searching Using Categories below). With this
option, you can browse categories and subcategories to find the graphics you want.

You can use the Graphics Grabber™ Category list itself as a reference for browsing
graphics.

Your Creative Capabilities

Searching Using Categories
One of the most successful methods for finding graphics is to browse by Category. Each
category is organized alphabetically by each illustration’s descriptive name.

To search by category, click the Categories option in the Graphics Grabber™ and
click on various category names to browse through the list of graphics for each
category. If no graphics exist for a category (say, People —Tourists) then the list
will not show that category.
You can browse the category list quickly by using the scroll bar, pressing Page
Up or Page Down, or by typing the first letters of the major category name you
want to see. (When you type the first letters, there is no blank box to type into —
just start typing.)

Print Artist graphics are categorized into 90 major categories. When you click on the
Categories option, the Graphics Grabber™ will display the 90 categories and their
associated subcategories.

To some degree, some major categories overlap. You will want to check several
categories when you have not yet found your perfect graphic, or you want to see every
graphic associated with a subject.

For example, Animals is a very large graphic category. You can see how this major
category, Animals, has been divided into subcategories.

55
Dashes are used to separate the major category from the subcategories:
Working

Animals-Aquatic-Fish

When a geographic location is important to the subject, that location is added in

brackets. Landmarks [U.S.]

Searching By Text Items

To do this, you must have text inserted into your document. Go to the Graphics
Grabber™ and click the text items radio button. Graphics will appear in the Graphics
Your Creative Capabilities

Grabber™ that corresponds to the text on the document.

This works for Items that have been keyworded, especially nouns like, Cat & Dog. It
does not work for most descriptive words, like Bright or Blue.

Print Artist Graphics Grabber™ CDs

Note: You must have 17 MB available on the Print Artist™ program drive to use the
Graphics Grabber™.

In addition to searching for images on your computer, the Graphics Grabber™ can also
search CDs that are labeled “Graphics Grabber™ CDs.” Graphics on these CDs are
indexed to work with the Graphics Grabber™ category and keyword searches. If you
use a graphic on a CD in a Print Artist document, that graphic will be imported onto
your computer. You'll then be able to find that graphic on your computer using the same
category and keywords that you used to find it on the CD.

There are three different methods for using the Graphics Grabber™
to access the Print Artist Graphics Grabber™ CDs:

1 Clicking the “Insert Print Artist CD Graphic” button on the toolbar

(CD icon)

2 Selecting the “Insert CD Graphic” command from the Insert menu

The “Insert Print Artist™ CD Graphic” button on the toolbar will open the Graphics
Grabber™ with only the graphics on that CD displayed. This is faster than clicking the
“Insert A Graphic Object” button on the toolbar, opening the Graphics Grabber™ and
then selecting “Search Graphics Grabber CD.” To view the graphics on your
computer, select “Search Graphics on My Computer” from the drop-down list box at
the upper left hand corner of the Graphics Grabber™. The graphics on your computer

will now be displayed.

Changing Graphics Grabber™ CDs

To change to another Graphics Grabber™ CD when one is in your CD-ROM drive,
select the “Load next Graphics Grabber CD” from the drop-down list box. Print Artist
will update and display the graphics on the new CD.

Note: The Graphics Grabber™ will display graphics in directories that you have
specified using the Graphic Directory Setup command in the File menu. Changing the
settings in Graphic Directory setup is recommended for experienced Print Artist users
only. For more information, please refer to the Graphic Directory Setup section in
Help.

Templates

Templates are pre-designed projects with guide frames already in place. They make a
project go easier — by providing a pre-designed framework, you can concentrate on
your message and quickly design your project. They also provide a quick lesson on
good design by supplying a professional foundation for your project, as well as taking
the guesswork out of a layout. And, though the template can get you started, you can
still edit your project and customize it any way you choose. You can delete the empty
guide frames just as you delete any object, and you can move and resize inserted text
blocks and graphics, too.

65
Working

To open a template, you can choose Template under each of the project menus. Or,
Your Creative Capabilities

select New Type dialog box, select the desired template, and double-click it or press
ENTER. If you double-click a graphics guide frame, the Graphics Grabber opens; if
you double-click a text guide frame, the Change Text dialog box opens.

Zoom...Quick Access to Your Layout

To better control your document, you’ll want to be familiar with the Zoom features and
the features in the View Menu. This way, you’ll be able to get a better “view” of your
document. Here are a couple of situations you will probably come across when you will
need this tool:

Small graphics or text blocks – Zooming in or out will help you position
and size objects better.

Documents and layouts. Zooming out or in gives you a good idea of how
your document looks from a design standpoint, and you can evaluate its
composition, from spatial relationships between objects to the overall
look of their design.

Frames. Sometimes objects travel off the edge of your document page.
Distant views (Zoom Out) will let you see and grab frame handles more
easily.

Large projects. Projects such as banners or multi-page signs are

considered large projects. When you choose the Fit in Window view you
will see the whole document at a glance.

66
Moving Elements Between Documents

Working
When you have a large, cohesive document, such as matching letterhead, envelopes,
note paper and business cards, all with the same graphics and type, keep the project
streamlined by using the copy and paste elements between these documents.

To copy an object or linked set of objects from one document to

another:

Your Creative Capabilities

1 Select or link the objects to be copied.
2 Choose Copy from the Edit Menu, or press Ctrl + C.
3 Open the document or click on the window of the document into which the
copy will be pasted. Depending on the type of document you want to
formulate, this may require returning to the Select Project Type dialog box,
choosing a new project type, and then opening a document.

4 Choose Paste from the Edit menu, or press Ctrl + V.

5 Easy! If the objects are not exactly where you want them to be, or the size
isn’t what you want, you can go ahead and edit the document as you would
any other.

Scanning

There are three ways to bring in scanned artwork or graphics. This requires that you
already have scanner software installed. Review your scanner software and the on-line
help section for more information about bringing scanned objects into your documents.

If you have previously scanned images already on your computer or

on a removeable disk you can:

1 Import the graphics to Print Artist™ 6.0 by selecting import from the File
Menu or clicking on the import button.

67
2 Add the directory in Graphic Directory Setup. (These will most likely be

JPGs or BMP files.)

Or you can scan directly to the Program.

3 Go to Select Source in File Menu and choose the scanner you want to use.
(This is mostly if you have multiple imaging products installed on your
computer.) Then go to Acquire and this will open your scanning software.
Once you have finished scanning you can transfer the image directly to your
document.

Text,Type and Fonts

You can easily put text in your own words...in any style or color you choose! Text is the
wording in your document. This is the “raw” material — no editing, sizing, or layout
has been done to it yet.

There are several ways to change the appearance of your text:

Change the font — change the characters to a particular group or

“family” of letters and numbers.

Change the type style — make the text plain, italic, tilted, wacky or stag
gered.

Change the width and point size.

Change the text alignment — make the text left, center, right or justified.

Change the color — choose from any number of colors.

Apply effects — stretch, twist or curl your text.

Your Creative Capabilities
To insert text:

1 Choose Text from the Insert Menu, or click the Insert Text button on the
Toolbar.

2 Enter the text, including whatever special characters you may want.
3 Click OK to accept the text .This ends the text editing session.
Special Note: Push the Quote button to access over 5,000 interesting
quotes and sentiments.

Changing Calendar Dates

Change Calendar Date allows you to change the date of a calendar. The default setting is
the current month and year. You can set this date for any month between the years 1901
and 2099. Note: Changing the date of a calendar that contains custom information will
lose all the changes you have made to the calendar, since all of the days of the month
will change.

Double-clicking on the date box will allow you to customize your

calendar for that month.

If you use the Insert Text feature on the menu bar, this will move your
text to the next calendar that you create.

Editing Text
Working

To edit an existing text block:

1 Activate its frame and double-click the frame or choose the Edit Text
command from the Edit Menu.

2 Make the changes to the text. If you want to delete parts of the text,
highlight the section with the cursor and press the DELETE key. If you want

to add text to the existing text block, position the cursor at the appropriate
place, click, and type in new text.

3 Click Okay. You will now see your text changes.

Typeface
“Typeface” refers to the shape or outline of letters, numbers or other printed symbols.
(See Fonts below.)

Point Size
“Point size” refers to the height of type on the page. One “point” equals 1/72 of an inch.

Specifying Point Size (using the Font menu)

Specifying Point Size (using the Font menu): This also changes the size of the text. This
will force the text to be a specific point size. First select “Fit frame to letter” then select
point size.

Type Style
Type style refers to the orientation of your text or type. Type styles are different
appearances for the text, such as at an angle. Choose the type style from the Fonts
palette.

70
Working
Your Creative Capabilities
Fonts
A font is the complete alphabet for a particular typeface; a family of characters. Type
and Font are often interchanged. Print Artist™ 6.0 provides 300 fonts. What font you
choose can really affect the look of your projects, because fonts have different
“personalities.” Some are “serious,” while some are funky and fun. Choosing a font can
dramatically change the tone of your work.

Sizing Text
The sizing text function allows you to make text larger or smaller, depending upon the
design of your project. You can use the frame’s grab handles to resize and reposition a
text block.

To use the frame handles to resize text:

1 Move the pointer until the icon for the function you want to use appears.
2 Drag the frame until it has reached the size you want.
3 Release the mouse button.

71
Changing Text Width
Working

1 Select the text block and then choose Width from the Font menu. The Select
Font Width dialog box will appear.

2 Click the scroll arrows. These will increase or decrease the text width
setting. You can also type the desired width.

Shaping Text
Select this option from the lower portion of the menu or from the list portion of the
Your Creative Capabilities

Shapes palette. The Shape command offers three frame shapes:

Aligning Text
You can align your text, or choose the placement of text in the frame. It can be left,
right, centered or justified, run vertically down the page, or be aligned in some other
fashion. The text is always inserted flush left and horizontal, centered vertically (with
Word Wrap on) until you change its orientation or alignment. Turn Word Wrap off and
choose commands from the Alignment menu to change alignment within the frame, or
highlight the text and use the Toolbar alignment buttons. (Alignment changes the text
within a frame only, not the alignment on the page. You will have to position the text
frames using the grabber handles or use commands in the Object menu.)

Vertical Text
To have text that is right-side up, running vertically up and down the page, first insert
the text in the usual way, and then choose the Vertical command from the Alignment
menu. The maximum number of characters (letters, spaces and numbers) allowed is 254.

72
Working
Your Creative Capabilities
Text Word Wrap
This is found under the Alignment menu and on the Toolbar. When Word Wrap is on,
the text flows from left to right, horizontally, with automatic returns. When Word Wrap
is off, all of the text in a block will be placed on one line, unless you have pressed Enter
to return text to the next line) in the vertical center of the frame.

Justifying Text
This means all the lines of the text are flush within the specified margins, both left and
right. Choose “letter justified” if you want even spaces in all the characters across the
frame, or “word justified,” which adds spaces between the words to make the line flush
with the left and right margins. If Word Wrap is on or off, it can make a difference. The
Vertical Justified command has its own button (Vertical Stretch) and will arrange the
lines in a text block so the text is flush with the top and bottom margins of the frame.

73
Other Spacing Commands
Working

These commands will also help you move, change or size your text:
Your Creative Capabilities

Left Aligns the text to the left frame border.

Horizontally Centered Places the text in the horizontal center of the

frame.
Right Aligns the text to the right frame border.

Horizontally Stretched Stretches each letter so the text is horizontally

framed, which results in some distortion and
thickens the original font.

Top Aligns the text with the top frame border.

Vertically Centered Places the text in the vertical center of the frame.

Bottom Aligns the text with the bottom frame border.

Vertically Stretched Stretches all the letters in the vertical direction.

Extra Letter Spacing Adds extra spaces between each letter in a

selected text block.

Extra Line Spacing Increases the space between each line in a

selected text block.

Printing Your Document

Working
Once you’re ready to print your document, choose the Print Setup from the File menu.
The Printing Setup dialog box will open, followed by the Print dialog box. The
document you want to print will display oriented just as it will appear on the printed
page. The paper orientation can be set to Portrait (vertical) or Landscape (horizontal).
Pink lines crossing the image indicate that document will print out on more than one
page.

Note: Remember that if you have a color monitor, but a monochrome printer, your
image will still be in color on your computer monitor, though it will print in shades of
monochrome.

Print Setup
The Setup button will list the different printer options available on your printer driver.
Every printer driver has different options, so you’ll need to consult your printer manual
for more information.

To preview your project, choose Print from the File menu.

75
Listed on the Print Options dialog box will be these features:
Working

Coloring Book will print just the outlines of the text or graphics in your
document. This is great for creating coloring books for your children. Note that
bitmap graphics cannot be shown in outlines, and appear on the page as they
usually do.

Mirror Image will flip the document being printed. This is useful when printing
on material that can directly transfer an image to a T-shirt.

Tile will repeatedly print images smaller than a full page on one piece of paper.
This is useful for business cards and postcards.
Your Creative Capabilities

Space will put spaces between multiple copies of an image when tile is checked.
Note: Do not select the Space option when printing with Kodak templates.

Stretch to Page stretches the project to print to the boundaries of the page. (This
option may conflict with other printer settings.)

Thin Outlines will convert thick outlines in text, symbols and fills to thin lines
when printing. This is useful for vinyl cutting tools that rely on plotter
instructions to cut thin lines.

Print Crop Marks will print small crop marks along with your document. This is
great for business cards, as it helps you cut up a full sheet of cards without
making mistakes.

Margin settings determine how a project is laid out on the page. Symmetrical
margins will even up the margins of your document and center it on the page.
Minimal margins will stretch the document to print on as much of the available
page as possible. Equal margins will use the largest margin set for your printer
for each of the four margins. This usually results in a smaller image than the other
margin settings. Rotate Automatically will print your document the best possible
way for your printer. Rotate Never will turn off the automatic rotation. Rotate
Always will force the document to print rotate. Note: Labels cannot be rotated.
To set your own margins, click Custom and adjust the top, bottom, left and right
sides accordingly.

Printing Scrapbooks
When you print your scrapbook, the entire scrapbook is sent to the printer, one page at a
time. If you do not want to print out the entire scrapbook, you may delete the pages
from the printer queue.

76
To access the printer queue, go to the Windows Start menu, select Settings, then

Working
Printers, and double-click on your printer. Each page of the scrapbook will be lined up
in the queue. Select the pages you don’t want to print and hit the DELETE key on the
keyboard.

If you create an 8 page Scrapbook and encounter missing or partial graphics or missing
pages, when printing, please reduce the percentage from 100% to 70% - 90%. When the
Print Control Panel/Preview dialog box prompts, use the Percent Size option to reduce
the scrapbook pages to 70% - 90% depending your printer.

Make sure the correct label number has been selected. Also, certain Avery labels are not
set correctly. Use layout #5927 for #8927 and #5167 for #8167.If the labels still do not
print centered, use the Change Dimensions option in the Edit menu menu to customize a
label sheet. To use this option:

Select a label.

Choose Change Dimensions from the EDIT MENU menu.

Measure the height of the label and enter this value in Height. Then measure
the width of the label, and enter this value in Width.

Now count the number of labels that run across and down and enter the amounts
in #Across and #Down.

Adjust the Margins to match the label sheet and account for the printers hard-
coded margins. This information will be in the printer manual.

Add any necessary Vertical or Horizontal spacing. Most labels need Horizontal
Spacing, at least .250 inches.

Now close this window and add a border to the label by selecting Border from
the Insert menu.

Go to File and select Print.

Click on Options, check Tile, and hit OK.

Print the page on letter size sheet of paper, then adjust the Dimensions again to
center the labels correctly.

Once the labels are adjusted, save the document to use as a template for printing
label sheets in the future.

Design the label and use the SAVE AS command to save the label before
printing.

The label should now print on the paper correctly.

How to print with Avery Label 4 Postcards sheets.

Print Artist is designed to print both the front and back side of a postcard on a sheet of
8-1/2 x 11 inch paper. The Postcard sides would then be cut out and glued together to
form a single post card. To print using 4 Postcards Avery Label sheets, use these
work-around instructions:

79
Open a new Sign in Print Artist.
Troubleshooting

Select 8-1/2 x 11 inches for a vertical Postcard and 11 x 8-1/2 inches for a
horizontal Postcard.

Design the front of the Postcard.

In the File Menu select Print.

Click on the Options button and check TILE. Hit OK.

Reduce the Print Size to 50% which will evenly tile your Postcard 4 times.

Now print out the Front of the Postcard.

Choose a new Sign to design the back of the Postcard and repeat the above
directions.

Now flip the paper over to Print on the other side of the Avery Postcard sheet.

The printed labels do not line up correctly on the pre-cut Avery

stock.
Resize the dimensions to be a little bigger than the actual cutout on the papers. To do
this, open your label document. Go to Edit menu, Change Dimensions. You can enter
custom dimensions for any label.

Error Messages
A "write-protected" in C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\*.TFF error occurs
when installing the program. (Where * is the name of the font the
program is trying to install.)
This error can occur if the FONT folder is write-protected, individual fonts are write-
protected, or the FONT folder has reached its limits and is full. To resolve this issue:

1 Open My Computer, the C:\ drive, and the WINDOWS folder.

2 Right click on the FONTS folder and choose Properties.

If READ-ONLY is checked under attributes, uncheck READ-ONLY, click on

APPLY, then OK and reinstall the program.

The Program should install without a problem.

82
If READ-ONLY is not checked under ATTRIBUTES, record the SIZE of the

Troubleshooting
FONTS folder and the number of FILES in this folder.

Close the Properties Windows.

Now open the FONTS folder.

Right click on the font that caused error and choose Properties.

Now check ATTRIBUTES again to see if READ-ONLY is checked. If it is

checked, uncheck the box, click APPLY, and OK, then reinstall the program. If
it is not checked then the FONT folder may have reached its limit.

3 The Windows Fonts folder has a registry limit. The registry can only store a finite
number of characters for the titles of every installed FONT. When this character
limitation is reached, no new FONTS may be added to the registry. If the Font
folder is larger than 18 MB in size or contains more than 350-400 Fonts, the
registries most likely have become corrupt. It will be necessary to remove
excessive fonts from the system and to clean the registries.

To delete FONTS, select a font and choose Delete form the File menu. Be
careful not to delete necessary system fonts.

To clean the registries, download a registry cleaning utility like

REGCLEAN.EXE from the internet sites like http://www.shareware.com.

The following is an excerpt from the Windows 95 help files, on this subject.
Microsoft Windows 95

SUMMARY
You can install a maximum of approximately 1000 TrueType fonts in Windows 95.
The exact number of TrueType fonts you can install varies, depending on the length
of the TrueType font names and filenames.

MORE INFORMATION
Installed TrueType fonts are listed in the registry and in the Graphics Device
Interface (GDI).

83
The Registry
Troubleshooting

All font files are registered under a single key in the registry, and a registry key
cannot exceed 64K. If font names average 20 characters in length and font filenames
average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you can install
falls between 1000 and 1500.

If a TrueType font file is located in a folder other than the Fonts or the System folder,
the full path to the font is included in the registry, using up more space in the key and
reducing the number of fonts you can install.

The GDI
The GDI contains an internal list of fonts, with 10K reserved for font filenames. If font
filenames average 10 characters in length, the maximum number of TrueType fonts you
can install is approximately 1000.

You can use all installed TrueType fonts simultaneously and you can print them in the
same document.

Note that the Windows 95 Resource Kit incorrectly states that there is no limit to the
number of TrueType fonts you can install in Windows 95.

Contact Microsoft for additional assistance with the Fonts folder at

http://www.microsoft.com.

General Protection Fault in PRTARTST.EXE occurs when opening the

program or randomly throughout the program.
This error is caused by changing the margins in the Program, which corrupts the printer
settings in the :\SIERRA\PA6\PAWIN.INI. Deleting the settings in the PAWIN.INI to
fix the error message:

1 Go to Start, Find, Files or Folders.

2 In the "Named box" type: PAWIN.INI

3 Change the "Look in" box to the C: drive and click on "Find Now."

4 The Find utility should find at least one file in :\SIERRA\PA6.

84
5 If it does not find this file, there are hidden files on the system.

Troubleshooting
-Go to My Computer and Open the C:\ drive.
-Select Options or Folder Options in the View menu, then click on the View Tab.
-Click on "Show All Files" and hit Apply and OK.
-Repeat steps 1 through 5.

6 Now double click on the PAWIN.INI file to open it up.

7 Scroll down to the brackets that contain the name of the printer on the system:

and delete the information directly beneath the brackets. For example, delete all of
this information:

UseAsMargins=1
Left=30
Top=84
Right=120
Bottom=60
Orientation=1
UseArea=1

8 Now the file will have just the name of the Printer with no information underneath
the brackets.

9 Go to File and select Save. Then select Exit.

10 Open Print Artist™ and print the banner again.

11 If the error still occurs, it may be necessary to delete the

A “general protection fault in module PIXRES.DLL” error message

occurs in the program.
This error can occur in different places in the Program. The solution to this problem
will depend on where and when the error occurs:

1 If the error occurs immediately after the program is launched, every time the
program is launched, then Print Artist may not have been able to build the
PIXRES.CSH File, which is the graphics cache for Print Artist.

Start Print Artist while holding down the Ctrl and the Shift keys.

Keep these keys held down until the Graphics Grabber begins updating.
(Holding down the Ctrl and the Shift keys while launching the program forces

system, then Print Artist can utilize Print Shop Deluxe (*.PSD) Files. When it
attempts to build the PIXRES.CSH File, Print Artist seeks out all compatible Files
like *.PSD Files and Post Script Fonts and adds this information to the program. On
occasion, Print Artist cannot successfully build this File. To resolve this problem:

Uninstall both products.

Install Print Artist first, and start Print Artist to build the Graphics Grabber.

Next, install Print Shop Ensemble.

Both programs should work with out errors.

3 If rebuilding the Graphics Grabber does not fix the error message and Print Shop
Ensemble is not installed on the computer system, follow Step #5 to resolve this
issue.

4 The PIXRES.CSH FILE may have become corrupted. This File is the graphics
cache for Print Artist. Every time an image is added or removed from the Print
Artist library, this File is updated. Occasionally the information will be corrupted,
and the File will need to be deleted from the :\SIERRA\PA6 directory on the hard
drive, then rebuilt.

Search for this File through the Windows Search features or delete the File from the
DOS prompt. In Windows 95:

Double click on My Computer, then the C drive.

Go to View, Folder Options or Options, and click on the VIEW tab.

Check “SHOW ALL FILES.”

Click on Apply and OK, then Close all open Windows.

Go to Start, Find, Files or Folders.

Change the “Look in” box to the C drive or the letter of the hard drive on which
Print Artist is installed.

in the Fonts Palette and show correctly on Premade layouts. This is related to Windows
handling of font files.

The palettes are too large and some of the options cannot be
accessed.
If one of the palettes (ie Font, Color, Effect, Shape) becomes too large to view, you can
resize it like most Windows applications. Move your mouse cursor to the edge of the
palette until it becomes a double arrow. Click with the left mouse button and drag until
the palette is resized to a size of your choice. You can resize from any side of the
palette.

Troubleshooting
When installing you receive the error “The serial number you have
entered is invalid. Please check the number and reenter it.”
The serial number is located on the front of the purple cardboard box which holds the
CDs. There are 3 things to remember when entering the serial number:

1 Type in the serial number without any spaces between the letters and numbers
(even if it looks like there is a space before the last three digits).

2 All “0” characters are the numeric zero, not the alphabetic letter “O”.

3 Be sure that the CapsLock is not on when entering the serial number. If it is on
when entering the number, the serial number will be invalid.

Labels
Troubleshooting

The labels in the print preview screen are off the print preview
screen.
This happens with all labels. Resize the print dialog so that it is bigger.

The edges of labels are cut off when printed, but display properly in
the Print Preview.
Check your printer margins or the margin setup in Print Artist. Some printers have the
margins hard-coded and cannot be changed. You may want to contact your printer man-
ufacturer for more information about changing the margins.

The printed labels do not line up correctly on the pre-cut Avery

stock.
Resize the dimensions to be a little bigger than the actual cutout on the papers. To do
this, open your label document. Go to Edit menu, Change Dimensions. You can enter
custom dimensions for any label.

Full page labels don't print properly.

If your printer cannot print to the edge of the paper, Edit menu the dimensions of the
document. To do this, open your label document. Go to Edit menu, Change Dimensions.
You can enter custom dimensions for any label. Change the dimensions to the following
measurements:

Width: 8.0
Height: 10.5
Margins:
Right and left: 0.25
Top and bottom: 0.25

You can set up Print Artist 6.0 to create other labels besides the ones listed in the cate-
gories. First select any blank or premade project in Specialty Products. For best results
select one with similar dimensions as the paper you wish to print on. Go to the Edit
menu menu and select Change Dimensions from the pull down list. Type in the dimen-
sions in inches of the particular paper type you wish to use. Then make any changes to
the labels that you wish and print. Note: Label Dimensions will only go out to 3 decimal
places, so round to the nearest place. Go to FILE, PRINT, OPTIONS and uncheck the
SPACING option (the spacing option is the default setting).

Mouse

Troubleshooting
Moved graphics leave mouse pointer trails on the screen.
This problem is caused by the video card not refreshing correctly. To correct this error:

1 Lower the graphics acceleration for the video card.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Performance, File System. Note:

For NT there is no File system.
Lower the Graphics Acceleration to Basic or Win95 Read Ahead Optimization,
then Click on OK to apply the changes.

Restart the computer.

2 If the mouse pointer trails still appear in the program after changing the Graphics
Acceleration, update the video card drivers. Drivers are updated every few months
and improve the overall performance of the computer. The updates are usually
available for free download from the computer system or video card manufacturer’s
web site.

3 Also, on some Win3.x and Win95 systems without the plus pack, the
FULLDRAG.EXE File can cause this problem. The solution is to remove the File
FULLDRAG.EXE from the program directory.

Pawin.ini
Deleting the PAWIN.INI setting:

1 Go to Start, Find, Files or Folders.

2 In the "Named box" type: PAWIN.INI

3 Change the "Look in" box to the C: drive and click on "Find Now."

4 The Find utility should find at least one file in :\SIERRA\PA4PLAT.

5 If it does not find this file, there are hidden files on the system.
-Go to My Computer and Open the C:\ drive.
-Select Options or Folder Options in the View menu, then click on the View Tab.
-Click on "Show All Files" and hit Apply and OK.
-Repeat steps 1 through 5.

97
6 Now double click on the PAWIN.INI file to open it up.

and delete the information directly beneath the brackets. For example, delete all of
this information:

UseAsMargins=1
Left=30
Top=84
Right=120
Bottom=60
Orientation=1
UseArea=1

8 Now the file will have just the name of the Printer with no information underneath
the brackets.

9 Go to File and select Save. Then select Exit.

10 Open Print Artist™ and print the banner again.

NOTE: If the program was upgraded from the 4.0 version, the default directory will be
:\SIERRA\PRTARTST instead of :\SIERRA\PA4PLAT.

Printing

Troubleshooting
Basic Printer troubleshooting for Print errors such as slow printing,
partial prints, document only prints a blank sheet, or random crashes.
Nearly all printing problems occur when the communication, “handshaking” between
the program and the printer breaks down. On older systems this can be caused by using
a bad printer cable, or the use of a print switcher. On all systems this can be caused by
low resources, outdated or corrupt printer drivers, or memory conflicts. To resolve these
issues, follow these steps:

1 Restart the computer to purge all information in RAM.

2 Change the Printer’s Spool Settings.

Go to Start, Settings, and Printers.

Right Click on the Printer and choose Properties.

Under Printer Properties, select on the DETAILS tab and click on the Spool
Settings button.

Change “Spool Data Format” from EMF to RAW (it may already be on this
setting.)

Click on Print directly to Printer. Then click on OK.

Now Select the GRAPHICS or COLOR tab. If there is an option for RASTER
MODE, select this mode. Then lower the DPI setting and click on OK.

Also, make sure that the Print Mode is set to Normal and not Best.

Close the Printer Properties window by clicking on OK.

3 Now set the printer as a default Printer. Right click on the Printer icon in the
Printers Window and select “Set as Default” to place a check mark by this
option.

4 Close any programs running in the background. To close programs running in the
background:

99
Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key. This will bring up

a Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running
programs.

The only programs that should be listed in the task list are the Explorer and
Systray. If there are other programs in the task list highlight one of them and
click on the End Task button.

Repeat steps A and B until the only programs listed in the Close Program Box
are the Explorer and Systray. NOTE: Some programs can not be shutdown
using these steps. Shut down those programs according to the instructions
specific to those programs.

5 Print from Print Artist.

6 If these options do not correct this problem, try printing from MS Paint (Start,
Programs, accessories). MS Paint prints in graphics mode. Many of other
programs will only use text mode. If errors occur when printing in MS Paint,
contact the printer manufacturer for help configuring the printer properly for
graphics mode.

7 Also, many printer problems can be resolved by the newest drivers for the printer.
Contact the printer manufacturer for the latest printer drivers for the printer. These
drivers will often correct errors and may also improve the performance of the
printer. Drivers are usually available for free download. Also, some printer
manufactures may recommend updating the printer memory. Consult the printer
manufacturer for assistance.

8 If none of these steps resolve these print errors, the printer drive may have become
corrupt. Uninstall and reinstall the printer driver.

Delete the Printer Icon from the Printer Window (START, SETTINGS,
PRINTERS) by highlighting the Printer Icon and selecting Delete from the File
Menu. Note: Some printers can only be uninstalled using their uninstaller
utility. The uninstaller will be located in the Printer Manufacturer’s Folder
located in the Programs Menu.

Reinstall the printer. Use ADD Printer icon under START, SETTINGS,
PRINTERS, or if the printer comes with its own Driver disk, run the Setup
program according to the disk instructions.

Now try printing.

How to print a banner with Print Artist.

Troubleshooting
In order to print a continuous banner on banner paper, banner paper must be an option
under paper selection. Consult the printer manual to make certain the printer can print
continuous banners. If banner is not an option in Paper Size, then Print Artist™ will
print the banner on cut sheets of 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper.

Steps to print a banner:

1 Before opening Print Artist, set the printer for banner paper.

2 Go to Start, Settings, Printers.

3 Right-click on the Printer and choose Properties.

4 Select the Paper Tab and choose Banner Paper. If this type of Paper is not an
option, select Custom or User Defined and set the dimensions to the width and
height of the banner. For Hewlett Packard printers, click on the “Capture Settings”
tab, then check “Enable Banner.” If none of these options are available, the banner
will print on cut sheets of Letter Size paper.

5 Now change the Paper Source to the appropriate tray if the banner paper is not in
the AUTO tray.

6 Click on OK and close all Windows.

7 Start Print Artist and open or create a banner.

8 After designing the banner, select Print from the File Menu to bring up the Print
Control/Preview Panel.

9 Click on SETUP. Print Artist always defaults to Letter Size paper. Change Paper
Size to CUSTOM, BANNER, or USER DEFINED. Change the Paper Source to
the appropriate paper tray.

10 Next, check the Orientation of the paper. Choose Landscape for a Horizontal
banner and Portrait for Vertical banner.

11 Close the SETUP window and click on OPTIONS.

12 Under Margins, select Minimal. Then close this window.

101
13 Before printing the banner, look at the Print Preview box. If there is a
Troubleshooting

horizontal line in the middle of the banner when printing a horizontal banner or
if there is a vertical line running through the center of a vertical banner, the
printer will print the banner in two sections. Reduce the Percent Size until this line
disappears. NOTE: If the banner is going to be printed on cut sheets of paper,
there will also be pink lines indicating page breaks.

14 Also, if there is an extra page under PAGES/COPIES, e.g. an 8 1/2 x 22 inch

banner will be printed on 3 cut sheets instead of 2 cut sheets, reduce the Percent
Size until the banner prints on the correct number of pages.

15 Now click on OK to print the banner.

16 If gaps appear on the printed, continuous banner, change the print Margins by
clicking on Print Size in the Print Control/Preview Panel. Check both boxes “Use
Printable Area Values” and “Use Values as Margins,” then reduce the margins to
zero or as close to zero as possible. Click on OK. If gaps still appear after
changing these margins, this may be related to the printer having Page Breaks with
hard-coded margins, and no settings changes will allow the printer to print a
continuous banner. Contact the printer manufacturer for updated printer drivers.
Occasionally newer drivers will fix issues like gaps when printing banners.

17 If the banner prints off-centered or the Width and Height in the Print Control/
Preview Panel are drastically different then the dimensions of the paper, the printer
settings in the PAWIN.INI File may have become corrupt and will need to be
deleted. See the directions below on DELETING THE PAWIN.INI SETTINGS. If
the banner continues to print incorrectly, then contact the printer manufacturer for
updated printer drivers. Often newer drivers will fix banner issues.

How to print an envelope.

If an envelope will not print correctly, follow these steps to correct the problem:

1 Before printing an envelope, make certain that the Paper Selection for the Printer
supports the envelope.

10 2
Go to Start, Settings, Printers.

Troubleshooting
Right click on the Printer Icon and choose Properties.

Click on the Paper tab and select the correct envelope size. If the size of the
envelope is not listed, choose User Defined or Custom and set the width and
height to the dimensions of the paper. (For more information on setting custom
paper, consult the printer manual.) The envelope paper size must be a choice in
Paper selection. If it is not, select the envelope size that is closest to the
envelope dimensions.

2 Open or create a new envelope. In “Select New Envelope” be sure to select the
envelope size that matches the dimensions of the envelope paper. If the dimensions
of the envelope are not listed as a choice under BLANK, then choose any envelope
and use the Change Dimensions option in the EDIT MENU menu. (Remember to
subtract the margins from the width and height when using the Change Dimensions
options.)

3 After Designing the envelope, go to File and choose Print to open the Print
Control/Preview Panel.

4 Click on Setup and change Paper Size to the size of the envelope or Custom/User
Defined. Then change Paper Source to the appropriate tray. (Consult the printer
manual for details on printing with an envelope). Click on OK.

5 Now view the envelope in the Print Preview box. If the envelope appears to be
printing on multiple pages, reduce the Percent Size until the envelope fits on one
page. Now Click on Print.

6 If the envelope is not centered it may be necessary to adjust the margins. Select
Print again from the File menu, then click on Print Size. Check both boxes “Use
Printable Area Values” and “Use Values as Margins,” then reduce the margins to
zero or as close to zero as possible. Click on OK and print. If the envelope is a #10
or #11 envelope, try changing the Paper Size to Letter 8-1/2 x 11 inch. Then adjust
the envelope in the Print Preview Box until it prints correctly on the envelope.

7 Print Artist always prints envelopes on the right side, unless the printer has a
manual tray. If the printer can only print an envelope in the middle of the printer
and manual tray is not an option for Printer Source, it will be necessary to create a
custom template on an 8-1/2 x11 inch paper.

Select a #10 or #11 envelope and insert a basic border into the envelope.

103
Now go to File and choose Print. Move the envelope so it is in the middle of
Troubleshooting

the page and print the envelope template on Letter size paper. Hold up the
paper to the envelope paper to make sure the information on the page fits the
envelope.

Now place an envelope in the tray and print the envelope. If necessary adjust
the margins to center the information on the envelope (see step 5). NOTE: A
custom template can only be made for #10 or #11 envelopes. To print different
sizes of envelopes, the printer must have these print options.

Colors on screen look different when printed.

Sometimes a printed document will not match the screen. These color discrepancies are
caused by software communication conflicts between the program and the printer, which
may be resolved by adjusting the monitor and printer color settings or by updating
printer drivers.

To adjust the colors:

1 Print a SWATCH from Print Artist:

Open a document in Print Artist and select Print in the File menu to bring up the
Print Control Panel/Preview.

Change DOCUMENT to SWATCH and print the swatch.

Use the printed palette as a reference sheet when selecting colors.

2 With the Printed swatch, adjust the monitor so the screen will match the colors on
the swatch.

107
3 Also, many printers have controls for adjusting the printer color in the Printer
Troubleshooting

Properties. Consult the printer manual for details on adjusting the printer color.

4 If only a few colors on the swatch differ from the screen, the printer may not be
able to produce that particular color. If the colors are drastically different
between the printed page and the screen, the printer driver is not understanding
the color information in the program. In either case, updating the printer drivers
for the printer resolves the color problems. Drivers are the software that
communicate with the computer hardware. Drivers are frequently updated to
improve the performance of the computer system and are usually available for
free download from the manufacturer’s web site.

CD-ROM (for example, 4x or higher).

If the CD-ROM is a SCSI or 16x or higher CD-ROM, set the Optimize Access
Pattern for No Read Ahead.

Click on Apply, then Okay.

Close the next window and allow the computer to restart.

4 If the problem persists try updating the CD-ROM driver.

To update drivers and check on the latest version available, contact the
computer manufacturer or CD-ROM drive manufacturer.

5 If the error still occurs, then the installation may have become corrupt.

Uninstall the program.

Run Scan Disk and Defrag.

Troubleshooting
a Close Program Box. The Close Program Box will show the currently running
programs.

The only programs that should be listed in the task list are Systray and Explorer.
If there are other programs in the task list highlight one of them and click on the
End Task button.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the only program listed in the Close Program Box is
Explorer. NOTE: Some programs can not be shut down using these steps.
They must be turned off according to the instructions specific to those
programs.

6 If none of these steps resolve this issue, get CD-ROM replacements. If the program
was purchased at a retail store, try checking with them to see if they will exchange
it for another. If they will not replace it, Sierra On-line will gladly replace the
program. CD-ROM replacement is FREE for the first 90 days of product
ownership. After 90 days there is a $10.00 handling fee per program for
replacement. For the fastest service, simply mail the CD to Sierra On-line, along
with either a copy of the sales receipt dated within 90 days or the $10.00 handling
fee, and a note detailing the problem that is occurring. In that note, also include a
name, address, and daytime telephone number. Sierra On-line will then send a
replacement CD-ROM right away.

The address is:

Scrapbooks
Scrapbook Files are limited to a maximum of 10 pages. If your scrapbook exceeds 10
pages, we recommend breaking your scrapbook into separate Files.

Printing Scrapbooks
When you print your scrapbook, the entire scrapbook is sent to the printer, one page at a
time. If you do not want to print out the entire scrapbook, you may delete the pages
from the printer queue. To access the printer queue, go to the Windows Start menu,
select Settings, then Printers, and double-click on your printer. Each page of the scrap-
book will be lined up in the queue. Select the pages you don't want to print and hit the
DELETE key on the keyboard.

Shape
Troubleshooting

The palettes are too large and some of the options cannot be
accessed.
If one of the palettes (ie Font, Color, Effect, Shape) becomes too large to view, you can
resize it like most Windows applications. Move your mouse cursor to the edge of the
palette until it becomes a double arrow. Click with the left mouse button and drag until
the palette is resized to a size of your choice. You can resize from any side of the
palette.

Video Card

Fonts
A font is a complete alphabet for a given typeface. The words type and font are often
used interchangeably. Print Artist contains 300 AGFA fonts. Fonts have a big impact on
your project design. Some are very professional looking while others are more
whimsical and fun. Picking the correct one for your design is important.

These fonts will automatically install.

You may choose from these fonts for

custom installation.
