    The African Samurai

    500 Years ago, an African man very tall arrived to Japan. This man, He was called Yasuke,
    would become in the first foreign in achieve the status of Samurai warrior, under the reign of
    Oda Nobunaga, which was a powerful feudal lord of XVI century.

    In 1579, Yasuke arrived to Kyoto, which was the capital in this era, caused such sensation that
    people gathered around to see him. Some peoples dead crushed by the crowd, told the
    historian Lawrence Winkler.

    After a year, Yasuke was in the hight position into the warrior class of japan, the samurai. A
    little time after, the African talked Japanese fluenty and he rode together with Nobunaga on
    the battlefield.

    He was height of 6 shaky y 2 sun (1,88 mts) he was black, and his skin was like coal, said one of
    this his companions, Matsudaira letada, who described him in his daily in 1579.

    The height average of Japanese men in 1900 was 1,57 m, so Ysuke had were higher than the
    other Japanese in the XVI, when the people in general they was lowest because bad nutrition.

    There isn´t register about the date nor place were Yasuke born. The most of historian believe
    that Yasuke was from Mozambique, but others have suggested other country like Ethiopia or
    Nigeria.

    However, the historian knows that Yasuke arrived to Japan with a Jesuit called Alessandro
    Valignano in a travel of inspection, and there are historical register enter 1579 and 1582. Some
    experts said that he was a slave but it difficult to know.

    Floyd Webb and Deborah DeSnoo, both filmmaker are working in a documentary about him,
    they believe that Yasuke could not be slave, this affirmation is just speculation. It would have
    been impossible that Yasuke achieve until rank of Samurai without experience like warrior.

    Finally, Nobunaga was betrayed for one of his general Akechi Mitsuhide, Nobunaga ends with
    himself life in a suicide ritual called Seppuku and before he killed himself ask for Yasuke to
    behead him and give for his son his head and his sword.

    The legend of Yasuke finish a little after of 1582 when he was exile and his destiny and last
    years are still a mystery.
