BCN 2053 – OPERATING SYSTEMS – Assignment

INSTRUCTIONS – Detail instructions is given below, please follow accordingly. This assignment
carries a total of 20 marks.

When we talk about operating systems, the most popular consumer OS are Windows and Linux.
This assignment is all about exploring both types of operating systems. Choose only ONE
operating system for each (example: Windows 10, Windows 8 for Windows variant ; Ubuntu, Red
Hat, Fedora for Linux variant. Each group require to:
1. Draw and explain in brief the evolution of both operating systems from the beginning up to
today. Explanations may include:
a. Year of release
b. Version release
c. Significant features for each big update.
2. Compare between this two very popular Operating Systems, Windows VS Linux in terms of :
a. Memory management
1. Focus on how both operating systems handle their memory management
especially on virtual memory. To support your research, you may include
relevant scenario of how memory being access.
2. Explain any limitation of maximum or minimum memory required by each
operating systems especially on 64bit or 32bit architecture
3. Compare and recommend which operating systems utilize its memory more
efficient in terms of:
i. Normal usage (everyday usage by normal user)
ii. Server usage (server environment)
b. Process management
1. Focus on how both operating systems handle their process management when
it comes to many processes request for CPU resources. You may include
relevant scenario.
2. Explain the operating system effect with various CPU type (Intel i7, Intel Xeon
AMD, SPARC, etc)
3. Compare and recommend which operating systems utilize its processor more
efficient in terms of:
i. Normal usage (everyday usage by normal user)
ii. Server usage (server environment)

c. File management
1. Focus on how both operating systems handle their file management especially
on file system hierarchy. Also, look for how do both operating system separate
system files and normal files. To support your research, you may include
relevant scenario of how memory being access.
2. Explain how both OS handles the naming conventions of each files
3. Explain how both OS handles system related files. Based on the findings, state
the pro and cons between both.
d. Security management
1. Focus on how both operating systems handle their security management
focusing on:
i. User and password authentication and management
ii. Securing kernel from unauthorized access
2. Explain how both operating systems handle an attempt to hack your system
from the internet. In your explanations, please include:
i. Related third party hardware or software if needed
ii. The mechanism of preventing.

3. As part of the comparison, you may choose one example of operating systems from both
variant, Example – Windows 10 and Linux – Ubuntu, Red Hat,etc. This will help you to focus
only one example of OS for each.
