Applications of Computer Graphics

Computer graphics has many applications including computer-aided design, presentation graphics, computer art, entertainment, education and training, visualization, and image processing. CAD is used for designing products and allows designers to view wireframe models and animations. Presentation graphics summarizes data through graphs and charts. Computer art involves using tools for painting, design, and animation. Entertainment utilizes graphics for movies, music videos, and television. Education and training uses simulations. Visualization represents scientific and business data sets. Image processing modifies photos.

APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS:

1. Computer-Aided Design(CAD)
2. Presentatiotion Graphics
3. Computer Art
4. Entertainment
5. Education and Training
6. Visualization
7. Image processing
8. Graphical User Interface(GUI)
1. COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN (CAD) :
 CAD methods are used in the design of buildings, automobiles, aircraft, watercraft,
spacecraft, computers, textiles, and many, many other products.
 In the designing process, objects are first displayed in a wireframe outline form that shows
the overall shape and internal features of objects.
 Wireframe displays also allow designers to quickly see the effects of interactive adjustments
to design shapes.
 Animations can be used in CAD applications.
 Real-time animations using wireframe displays on a video monitor are useful for testing
performance of a vehicle or system.
 Wireframe displays allow the designer to see into the interior of the vehicle and to watch the
behavior of inner components during motion.
 Animations in virtual reality environments are used to determine how vehicle operators are
affected by certain motions.
 Building architects use interactive graphics methods to layout floor plans that show the
positioning of rooms, door, windows, stairs, shelves, counters, and other building features.
 Realistic displays of architectural designs permit both architects and their clients to study the
appearance of a single building or a group of buildings.
 Virtual-reality systems facilitates the designers to go for a simulated "walk" through the
rooms or around the outsides of buildings to appreciate the overall effect of a particular
design.
 CAD packages allows the designer for experimenting with three-dimensional interior
layouts and lighting.

 PRESENTATION GRAPHICS
 Presentation Graphics is used to produce illustrations for reports or to generate 35-mm slides
or transparencies for use with projectors.
 It is used to summarize financial, statistical, mathematical, scientific, and economic data for
research reports, managerial reports, consumer information bulletins, and other types of
reports.
 .Examples: bar charts, line graphs, surface graphs, pie charts and so on.
 Graphs and Charts can be displayed in three dimensions to provide additional information.
They can provide a more attractive presentation of data relationships.
 COMPUTER ART
 Artists use computer graphics methods such as paintbrush programs, paint packages,
mathematical packages, CAD packages, DTP s/w and animation packages for designing
object shapes and providing object motions
 The paint brush program allows the artist to paint pictures on the screen of a video monitor.
The picture is painted electronically on a graphics tablet using a stylus which can simulate
different brush strokes, brush widths and colors.
 CG methods are used in commercial art for designing logos, page layouts, combining text
and graphics, TV advertising , sports and so on.
 Animations are used in advertising and television commercials are produced frame by
frame where each frame of the motion is rendered and saved as an image file.
 Another useful commercial method is morphing in which one object is transferred into
another. Eg:transforming a bike into a tiger,transforming one person’s face into another
face.
 ENTERTAINMENT
 CG methods are used in making motion pictures, music, videos and T.V shows.
 In music video, graphics objects can be combined with the live actions.
 Graphics and Image processing techniques can be used to produce a transformation of
one object into another (morphing)
 EDUCATION AND TRAINING
 Computer generated models for physical system, physiological systems, population
trends or equipment can help trainees to understand the operation of the system.
 Some training applications are used as simulators for practice sessions such as
training of ship captains, aircraft pilots, heavy equipment operators and air traffic
control personnel.
 VISUALIZATION
 Two types of visualization
I. Scientific visualization
II. Business visualization
 Producing graphical represantations of scientific, engineering and medical data sets and
processes is referred to as scientific visualization.
 Producing graphical representations for business data sets related to commerce,
industry and other non scientific areas and processes is referred to as business
visualization.
 Ther are many kinds of data sets. The sets can be two dimensional or three
dimensional. Different techniques such as color coding, contour plots, graphs and charts,
surface rendering visualization of volume rendering and image processing can be used
to produce different forms of visualizations.
 Mathematicians, scientific and others use visual techniques to analyse mathematical
functions and processes to produce interesting graphical representations.
 IMAGE PROCESSING
 It is a technique to modify or interpret existing pictures such as photograph and TV
scans.
 Applications of image processing are,
i. Improving picture quality
ii. Machine perception of visual information as used in robotics.
 Image processing is done by using the following steps
Step 1: Digitize a photograph or other picture into an image file.
Step 2: Digital methods can be applied to rearrange picture parts to enhance
color separations or to improve the quality of shading.
USES OF IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES
 It is widely used in medical applications for picture enhancement.
 Tomography is a technique of Xray photography
