EMTL Problems

1. A wire in the shape of a parabola is in a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plane XY. A jumper translates without initial velocity and at a constant acceleration a from the apex of the parabola. The induced emf is calculated as a function of the coordinate y. 2. A conducting circular loop of radius a has its center at the origin and its axis makes an angle θ with the z-axis. The induced voltage on the loop is derived and used to determine the loop radius from the measured peak to peak voltage. 3. An infinitely long filamentary conductor carrying a current I lies along the Z-axis. A square loop moves away from the conductor with uniform velocity

Example 1: A wire in the shape of a parabola is in a uniform magnetic field

perpendicular to the plane XY. A jumper translates without initial velocity and at a constant
acceleration a from the apex of the parabola as shown in figure 5.1. Find e.m.f induced in the
formed contour as a function of the co ordinate y.

Figure 5.1

Solution : By definiton,

Having chosen the normal to the plane of the contour in the direction of vector , we can
write when ds=2xdy .

For motion with a constant acceleration, the velocity and hence

and the minus sign indicates that acts counterclockwise.
