Teacher and Student Perceptions of the Methods Used in Teaching and

Learning English Secondary Writing Skills

Writing skills are essential for effective communication, the development of

writing skills among students depends on the method used in dependence. The reviewer
will review a journal on Teacher and Student Perceptions of the Methods Used in
Teaching and Learning English Secondary Writing Skills published in England, this
journal is published by three authors namely Koross, Francis, Tony and the year of
publication is 2013. The purpose of this study is the first, to determine teacher and
student perceptions about the methods used to understand and learn writing skills and
secondly, to compare teachers and students in assessing the methods used in learning and
learning writing skills.
The method used in this journal is research design. Research design is a unified,
detailed and specific plan on how to obtain, analyze, and interpret data and all processes
needed in planning and conducting research, from the preparation stage to the preparation
of the report. The purpose of this method is to collect data in more than one case and at
one point when collecting data in relation to two or more variables, which are then
examined to detect patterns of relationships, from behaviors that are difficult to observe
directly and when desired to take a sample of a large number of subjects to investigate.
The target in this population is 31 English teachers, with a sample size of 334 students
selected using simple random sampling technique. Of the 31 teachers, four were selected
using saturated sampling techniques. From the result and discussion it was found that the
teacher's score was negative; the average score is 2.49, meaning that the teacher does not
know the exact method used in teaching English writing skills, while students are
negative with an average score of 2.32 which is lower than the average teacher. In this
journal the author reveals that the development of writing skills is a challenge for
students. This study implies that performance in English subjects is not good due to poor
content methods.
This journal is updated because in the source section many writers include the
latest books and journals or the year of books and journals used as sources does not
exceed five years back from the year of publication in the journal. The reviewer also
agreed in this journal because writing skills are very important in learning English. And
the writing skills of educated participants influence the methods used in teaching, so in
this journal the author compares the methods available in English learning so that they
can find out which methods are suitable for learning writing skills in this journal. The
author also emphasizes that teachers pay more attention students in writing exercises in
class, as well as encouraging students to familiarize themselves with the structure to
express their ideas. From this journal the author really likes the word "Therefore this
research was a response to this need and focus on necessary resources and methods used
in teaching and learning English writing skills among students in secondary schools" in
these words the authors say that in English writing skills the high school students'
approach requires a focus on resources and methods used in teaching and learning. "The
downward trend in performance across the curriculum has raised concern to the
curriculum developers because English is used to teach and test other subjects except
Kiswahili, African and foreign languages." Reviwer disagrees with this opinion because
the obstructed performance of curriculum development is not caused by language English
used to teach and test other subjects If curriculum development is hampered because
English is used to teach and test other subjects, then this causes serious obstacles in
mastering writing skills.
The structure and grammar in this journal is good, but this journal uses language
that is difficult for ordinary people to understand, so difficult for some people to
understand. As in the sentence "There has been a general outcry expressed by
educationalists, employers, parents on the view that most of the four forms are not fully
equipped with proper communication skills evidenced in oral interviews and written
application letters.
