A. Solve the following problems using Polya’s four-step problem-solving strategy.

1. In the complex number system, 𝑖 1 = 𝑖 , 𝑖 2 = −𝑖, 𝑖 4 = 1, 𝑖 5 = 𝑖 , . . .

Find 𝑖 173 .
Solution:
𝑖1 𝑖 Odd 1
𝑖2 -1
𝑖3 -1 Even 2
𝑖4 1
𝑖5 𝑖 Odd 3
𝑖6 -1
Solution: ¿𝑖173
¿odd
¿𝑖
So, therefore the answer is 𝑖

2. Consider a rectangle with length l and width w. Now fold it into two, draw a line on the
fold, and unfold the rectangle. Observe that there are now three rectangles, two small
rectangles, and the original rectangle.
Fold the rectangle into three, draw a line on the fold then unfold. How many rectangles do
you see?
After following the instruction of folding the rectangular paper into three, I saw total
of five (5) rectangles, four (4) small rectangles and the original rectangle.
