Using The Concentration Calculation Worksheet

This document discusses quantitative analysis and calculating concentrations of solutions. It provides exercises to practice converting between units of volume like cm3 and dm3, using the concentration equation to calculate the concentration of solutions given the mass and volume, and using the concentration equation to calculate the required mass to make a solution of a given volume and concentration.

Analysis - Standard Solution Calculations

Quantitative Analysis – this involves discovering not just what is

contained in a sample but how much

The concentration calculation

Concentration is measured in g/dm3 (in other words the mass of chemical in 1 litre of
a solution with water)

Concentration = Mass ÷ Volume

(g/dm3) (g) (dm3)

Exercise 1 – convert the following volumes into dm3 (show your working)

to convert cm3dm3, divide by 1000 to convert m3dm3, multiply by 1000

a) 250cm3 d) 50cm3
b) 125cm3 e) 1000cm3
c) 1.5m3

Exercise 2 – Use the equation to work out the concentration of the following
solutions (show your working)

a) 10g of magnesium chloride in 1dm3 of solution

b) 1.5g of potassium iodide in 150cm3 of solution
c) 2.3g of lithium chloride in 500cm3 of solution

Exercise 3 – Use the equation to work out the mass required to make the
following solutions (show your working)

a) 0.5dm3 of a 2g/dm3 solution of silver nitrate

b) 250cm3 of a 1.5g/dm3 solution of sodium chloride
c) 10cm3 of a 0.4g/dm3 solution of sodium carbonate
d) 500cm3 of a 5g/dm3 solution of magnesium sulphate
