Department of Mechanical Engineering: ME332 Dynamics of Machinery Spring Semester Project

The document describes a student project to design a gear transmission. It includes selecting spur gears with a 1:2 ratio and bearings to support the shaft. Traditional manufacturing methods like cutting, welding, and fixing with bolts were used. A cost analysis shows the project had a total cost of 112 TL, with the majority of costs going to gears and bearings. The conclusion is that the student learned about gear design and related calculations.

SPRING SEMESTER PROJECT

DESING A GEAR TRANSMISSION

ABSTRACT:
In this project I used traditional manufacturing methods for design a gear transmission. In
this project I used traditional manufacturing methods for design a gear transmission.Firstly I
used a pinion (25 teeth) and a gear (50 teeth) with a ratio of 1: 2. And I cut the shaft
according to the internal diameters of the gears. Then I welded the shaft and the gear. After
that I bought the bearings that are suitable for this shaft. Lastly, I fixed it with the bolts.

AIM OF THE PROJECT:

The purpose of this project is to design a gear transmission, to calculate the number of
gears, module,ratio.

INTRODUCTION:

What is Gear?
A gear is a toothed cylindrical or roller shape component of a machine which meshes with
another toothed cylindrical to transmit power from one shaft to another. It is mainly used
to change in torque and speed of driving shaft and driven shaft.Gears can be classified in
various types according to construction of teeth, use, the direction of motion transfer etc.
but basically it is classified according to design of teeth.

What is Bearing?
A bearing is a machine element that allows one part to bear another. The main functions of
bearings are;
• To reduce friction between moving rotatory parts.
• To support rotating parts of a machine.
• To bear radial and thrust load.

There are many types of bearings, each used for different purposes. These include ball
bearings, roller bearings, ball thrust bearings, roller thrust bearings and tapered roller thrust
bearings.
MATERIALS ANALYSIS:
Selection of Gear:
I used spur gears in this project. These gears are used to transmit the power in same plane
or when the driving and driven shafts are parallel to each other. In this type of gear teeth
are cut parallel to the axis of the shafts so when is meshes with another spur gear it
transmit the power in parallel shaft and when it connects with the helical gear it will
transmit power at an angle from the driving axis.

Selection of Bearing:

I used contact ball bearing in this project. These bearings can handle both radial and thrust
loads, and are usually found in applications where the load is relatively small. Therefore I used
this type of bearing.

Why I choose Cast Iron?

• High tensile strength to prevent failure against static loads.
• High endurance strength to withstand dynamic loads.
• Low coefficient of friction.
• Good manufacturability.
• High availability

Cost of materials for desing a gear transmission:

In this section highlights the bill of materials for the design, which includes part names, amount
of parts, cost per part, source of part, and the total costs.

PART AMOUNT COST/PART TOTAL COST

Gears(2 Different Sizes) 2 10 TL 20 TL
Bearings 4 15 TL 60 TL
Drill in Gears 2 10 TL 20 TL
Shafts 2 2.5 TL 5 TL
Bolts 8 0.5 TL 4 TL
Nuts 12 0.25 TL 3 TL
TOTAL =112 TL
CALCULATIONS:

CONCLUSION:

By performing this project I had learnt the design of spur gear, solving related problem,
calculating number of tooth, module, ratio of it. In future it will be helpful for me to choose
the right gear among various types gear.
