तृतीयः पाठः - ३ धन्यौ तौ दातृयाचकौ

Today we are going to learn a very interesting topic धन्यौ तौ दातृयाचकौ. In Indian culture charity
occupies a very important place. However charity should always be done by the right person
to help the right person; only in that case it can be considered as a genuine act of charity
otherwise it will be just hypocrisy. We know that many people do charity for the sake of
publicity and not with a genuine desire. Hence donor and donee must be good, that is why
the name of the chapter is धन्यौ तौ दातृयाचकौ- दातृ means donor and याचकः means the donee, the
person who receives or who is asking for the donation, since both of them are noble they are
great (धन्यौ).

This chapter is taken from the great saga known as Raghuvamsham written by the great
Sanskrit poet Kalidas. This chapter is the 5th episode of Raghuvasmsham which mentions an
incident happened in the life of King Raghu. King Raghu performed the Vishvajit sacrifice in
which he donated his entire treasury. Once a student named Kautsa came to Raghu for
wealth that he wanted to give to his teacher Varatantu. Raghu fulfilled the desire of Kautsa in
a special way which is described in this chapter.
Once upon a time in a sacred grove (Tapovan, forest where sages meditate) there was a sage
named Varatantu. He was an expert teacher and by behaviour he was a kind soul. In his
ashram many intelligent students studied. One among them was Kautsa. After completing
his studies Kautsa was excited to give Guru Dakshina to his teacher and so he approached
Varatantu. With humility he expressed his wish. Listening to his desire, Varatantu
replied,”My child Kautsa! I am very much satisfied by your studies and service I don’t desire
any other Guru Dakshina. Hence my child you may go, my blessings with you always.”
Even though the Guru politely turned down his request, Kautsa repeatedly pressed his desire
to give Guru Dakshina.

Thus in order to test him Varatantu replied, “You learnt 14 subjects from me and so in return
pay me with 14 crore gold coins”. Listening to this Kautsa became extremely tensed. “How
can I get 14 crore gold coins?” thought Kautsa. “Apart from king Raghu who is capable of
giving me such a huge sum. Thus I must approach King Raghu.” Having made up his mind
he went to meet king Raghu

In this chapter we can find certain words are highlighted in red. These words are उकारान्त
words, i.e. words ending in the letter उ, like रघ,ु बटु, वरतन्त,ु गरुु etc. This chapter shows how
उकारान्त words are applied in sentences. Students must be familiar with the sentences. The
table will be done afterwards.
