1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification prescribes the mandatory requirements for line shaft vertical turbine,
mixed flow axial flow, and barrel pumps. This specification forms a part of all inquiries
and Purchase Orders for this equipment. It excludes vertical centrifugal pumps with
separate discharge pipe.
1.2 This specification supplements the datasheets, on which the operating conditions and
special requirements are listed in detail for each individual pump.
1.3 Conflicts between this specification and other documents should be brought to the
attention of the Buyer for clarification.
1.4 Compliance with this specification does not relieve Supplier of responsibility of furnishing
pumps and accessories of proper design, electrically and mechanically suited to meet
operating guarantees at the specified service conditions.
1.5 Suppliers qualified by experience manufacturing the proposed units shall supply pumps.
To qualify, the Supplier shall have manufactured at least two (2) pumps of comparable
size, model, power rating, and speed in similar service as indicated in the individual
specification and data sheets. These pumps shall have completed at least 8000 hours of
continuous operation satisfactorily.

3.0 TERMINOLOGY
Rated Capacity: The capacity of the pump at the guarantee point with rated discharge pressure,
speed, suction pressure, specific gravity, and viscosity.
Maximum Allowable Casing Working Pressure: The greatest pressure at the specified
pumping temperature for which the pump casing is designed.
Maximum Discharge Pressure: The maximum pressure the pump is able to develop, measured
at the bowl assembly, when operating at the specified conditions of speed, specific gravity, and
pumping temperature, with the furnished diameter impeller.
Rated Discharge Pressure: The discharge pressure of the pump operating at the guarantee
point, with rated capacity, speed, specific gravity, and pumping temperature with the furnished

diameter impeller(s). Rated discharge pressure shall be measured at the centerline of the
discharge elbow connection.
Total Bowl Head: The head the pump bowl assembly must generate, which equals the
summation of the rated discharge pressure plus all losses throughout the pump, column pipe, and
discharge elbow.
Rated Speed: The normal operating speed (rpm) upon which the pump performance ratings and
guarantees are based.
Maximum Suction Pressure: The highest suction pressure to which the pump is subjected
during operation.
Rated Suction Pressure: The suction pressure for the operating conditions at the guarantee
point.
Rated Power: The power required by the pump at specified rated operating conditions, including
capacity, pressures, specific gravity, and viscosity.
Throat Bushing: A close-clearance stationary ring around the shaft between the seal (or
packing) and the impeller.
Throttle Bushing: A close-clearance non-rotating ring in the gland of a mechanical seal plate to
minimize leakage.
Pressure Casing: The composite of major stationary pressure containing parts of the unit,
including nozzles or other parts attached thereto (excluding shaft and shaft sleeve).
Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA): The total suction head in feet of liquid
absolute, determined at the pump, less the absolute vapor pressure of the liquid pumped. The
assumed reference (for NPSHA) is the following:
Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR): As determined by Pump Supplier, and is
expressed in meters (feet) of water required by the pump for the specified capacity, referred to
the suction eye of the first stage impeller.
Baseplate: Portion of the pump barrel (for barrel pumps) or discharge head (for open suction
pumps) that rests on the foundation or the subbase plate and supports the weight of the pump.
Subbase Plate: Attached to or grouted into the foundation or mounting surface and remains in
place when the pump is removed. The subbase plate (or soleplate) must be machined to mate
with the baseplate.

Pump Efficiency: The bowl efficiency reduced by mechanical and hydraulic losses of the
column and discharge head.
Minimum Flow: The least flow at which the pump can continuously operate without danger of
failure considering the fluid characteristics.
Barrel: A cylindrical fabricated steel casing enclosing the pumping element and flanged at the
top to receive the discharge head.
Pump Element: A complete bowl assembly, either single or multistage, depending on the
specified rated conditions of capacity and total dynamic head.
Discharge Head: Flanged at both the top and bottom. The top flange is machined to accept a
vertical solid shaft driver. The bottom flange is machined to accept the pump barrel flange (for
barrel pumps) or the sub-base plate for open suction pumps.
Submergence: The minimum liquid level above the impeller centerline suction entrance to
prevent vortexing.
4.2 Pumps with constant speed drivers shall have impeller diameters such that at least a
5 percent increase in head at the rated capacity can be obtained by installing a larger
diameter impeller of the same pattern. On multistage pumps this requirement may be met
by providing necessary case and shaft configuration to accept additional impellers or
stages, provided this is so stated in the proposal.
4.3 The pump datasheet states the rated discharge pressure and normal static lift. Pump
Supplier shall be responsible for taking into account all losses to meet the guarantee
point.
4.4 Pumps shall have the normal capacity point at or near the best efficiency point on the
head-capacity curve for the impeller diameter proposed and supplied. The rated capacity
point shall preferably be greater than 40 percent of the capacity at the best efficiency
point.
4.5 Supplier shall furnish head-capacity curve for proposed pump with the quotation. Curve
shall indicate bowl head as well as discharge head (referenced at discharge flange).
4.6 Pumps shall have the characteristic of continuously rising head with decreasing capacity

from rated capacity to shutoff. Shutoff head shall be a minimum of 110 percent, but not
greater than 120 percent, of rated head.
4.7 Pumps shall be designed for operation outdoors, totally unprotected from the weather.
4.8 Close coupled pumps, in which the motor shaft is also the pump shaft, are unacceptable.
4.9 Instruments and valves, including auxiliary systems, shall be securely mounted or
supported to eliminate damage during shipment, storage, operation, and maintenance.
4.10 Pump must be able to operate at 25 percent of design flow without recirculation. Supplier
to state minimum continuous stable flow without damage to the pump.
4.11 Metric fasteners constitute alternative design features and shall be cited as exceptions to
the Supplier’s proposal. Metric flanges are not acceptable.
A. The pump shall be directly coupled to the driver or right angle gear.
B. Pumps and major components shall be provided with suitable means to facilitate
lifting and disassembly, such as eye bolts and lugs.
C. Vertical pumps that could be damaged by reverse rotation shall be provided with
a non-reverse ratchet.
D. Pumps shall be capable of operating over the entire range of the head capacity
curve, without encountering zero thrust on the thrust bearing.
E. Pressure casings shall be of such thickness as will be suitable for the maximum
discharge pressure at pumping temperature and hydrostatic test pressure at
ambient temperature, with 3 millimeters (1/8 of an inch) minimum corrosion
allowance.
F. Design stress, temperature restrictions, and other similar considerations, for all
materials shall be consistent with those limitations for similar materials as given
in Section VIII, Division 1, of the ASME Code.
G. Pressure containing parts shall be built in accordance with Section VIII, Division
1, of the ASME Code. Code stamp and data report forms are not required.
H. The back of flanges shall be either full faced or spot faced to MSS-SP-9
standards.

I. Supplier shall state the maximum allowable working pressure of the pump barrel
and whether or not the barrel is ASME Code stamped.
5.2 Materials
B. Castings shall be sound and free from shrink or blow holes, scale, blisters, and
other defects. The surfaces shall be cleaned by Supplier's standard methods.
Casting burrs shall be filed or ground flush with the surface of the casting.
C. The repair of leaks and defects in pressure castings by the use of plastic or
cement compounds is not acceptable. The pump manufacturer shall be
responsible for the review of repair welds on cast steel casings to ensure that
they are properly heat treated and non-destructively examined for soundness.
The Buyer shall be informed before any major repairs are made, including
photographs of the affected areas. Should the manufacturer proceed with
repairs without prior buyer approval, and then request approval for such repairs,
he does so at his own risk; and Buyer reserves the right to reject such repaired
castings.
5.3 Equipment
A. Discharge Assembly
1. The discharge head shall have an upper base machined and registered to
mount and accurately align the driver. The driver shall fit on the discharge
head without overhang at the base and shall not require the use of an
adapter plate.
2. The baseplate of the discharge head shall be equipped with a flange for
attachment of the pump barrel or discharge column assembly. If a subbase
plate is specified, the baseplate shall be machined to mate with the subbase
plate.
3. Flange bolt holes shall straddle the horizontal and vertical centerlines.
6. Thrust bearings located in the discharge head shall conform to the same
requirements as those furnished in drivers (Refer to Section 5.3.F).
7. A replaceable shaft sleeve to protect the shaft where it passes through the
stuffing box is required on pumps. Shaft sleeves shall extend beyond the
outer face of the gland or seal plate and inward past the throat bushing.
8. The shaft sleeve outside diameter through stuffing boxes shall be made in
increments of 3 millimeters (1/8 of an inch).
9. The surface finish of the shaft or sleeve through the stuffing box and at any
rubbing contact points shall not exceed a roughness of 0.8 microns (32
microinches).
10. Preference shall be given to designs that have a smooth internal water
passage through the discharge head terminating at an above ground
discharge flange. The water passage and discharge flange of the head shall
be the same nominal size as the column pipe.
11. Pump shaft and shaft sleeve runout, as measured by a dial indicator at the
stuffing box face, shall not exceed 50.8 microns (0.002 inch) total indicator
reading.
12. Dynamic shaft deflection shall not exceed 50.8 microns (0.002 inch) at the
face of the stuffing box when operating at any point on the head-capacity
curve at rated speed.
2. The net elongation at design temperature due to the total axial thrust at
shutoff conditions shall not exceed 50 percent of the axial clearance
adjustment of the impellers in the pump bowls.
4. Lineshaft couplings shall be single piece sleeve type and shall be either
threaded to tighten during pump operation or keyed.
5. Maximum line shaft bearing spacing shall be 1.5 meters (5 feet) for speeds
1800 rpm or less. For speeds greater than 1800 rpm, a 1 meter (3 feet)
maximum bearing span shall be used.
Bearings
1. Bearing or guide bushing spacing shall be such that the pump, when coupled
to the driver, shall meet the criteria of Section 6.2 of this specification.
4. Bearings that are oil lubricated must contain oil grooves or a separate by-
pass hole that will readily allow the oil to flow through and lubricate the
bearings below.
6. Guide bushings that are suitably corrosion and abrasion resistant for the
specified product and temperature shall be furnished. Supplier shall state
the materials and ASTM designation.
Enclosed Tubing
Column Pipe
1. The bowl assembly shall consist of the number of stages required to develop
the total bowl head.
3. Suction strainers shall have mesh openings 75 percent of the size of the
smallest passage within the pump. The total open area of the strainer shall
be a minimum of 4 times the area of the suction inlet of the pump.
4. Bowls shall be flanged and fastened by means of studs and nuts, or cap
screws.
5. The interior surfaces of the bowls and the interior and exterior surfaces of the
impeller may be coated with porcelain or vitreous enamel. Paint or plastic
type coatings are not acceptable.
10. Multistage pumps shall be supplied with impellers trimmed to the same
diameter.

11. The impeller shaft shall be of one piece construction and the diameter shall
not be less than that of the lineshaft.
D. Mechanical Seals
1. The type of mechanical seal and the materials of construction required shall
be shown on the individual datasheet. Where the mechanical seal supplier
or pump supplier has specific experience that an alternate type seal or
materials shall give better service, that seal or material may be submitted for
Buyer's consideration, as an alternate.
3. Supplier shall ensure that the stuffing box pressure exceeds the vapor
pressure at pumping temperature by a pressure of 173 kPag (1.73 barg) (25
psig) minimum. Supplier shall quote approximate stuffing box pressure in
proposal.
4. A non-sparking throttle bushing, pressed into the seal end plate, shouldered
to prevent blowout, shall be provided to minimize leakage on complete failure
of the seal. The diametrical clearance between the bushing and the shaft
sleeve shall not exceed 0.635 millimeters (0.025 inches).
5. Seal gland plates shall be of the same or more corrosion resistant material
as the pump case, except that carbon steel plates shall be furnished with
cast iron or ductile iron cases. Each seal gland plate shall be retained by a
minimum of four 13 millimeters (1/2 of an inch) minimum diameter bolts.
6. Seal gland plates shall be provided with quench and drain connections (13
millimeters [1/2 of an inch] NPT minimum) when throttle bushings are
provided.
7. Single mechanical seals, when flushed, shall be arranged so that the flush
liquid is directed to the seal mating faces.
9. Seal gland plate shall be provided with a vent connection to ensure that the
seal is not vapor locked on start up or under running conditions.
2. Stuffing box glands shall be easily removable and must permit replacement
of packing without removal or disassembly of any other part of the pump.
F. Drivers
2. Thrust bearings located in drivers shall be designed for 2 year minimum L-10
life, and to carry the maximum thrust (up and down) that the pump may
develop during starting or stopping, or while operating at any capacity. The
maximum thrust capacity of the driver shall be stated in the proposal. The
proposal shall state if the thrust bearing requires cooling water, and, if so, the
rate of flow and maximum pressure required.
3. Gear losses shall be added to the pump brake horsepower before driver
rating factors are applied.
4. Motors for pumps shall have nominal horsepower ratings at least equal to the
following percentage of pump rated brake horsepower:
5. Motor drivers shall be sized for the maximum pump brake horsepower
required at any point on the curve without exceeding motor horsepower
rating plus service factor. When it appears that this shall lead to
unnecessary oversizing of the driver, an alternative may be submitted for
Buyer's consideration.
6. The rated horsepower of steam turbine drivers shall be 110 percent of the
rated pump brake horsepower, based upon the guaranteed pump efficiency.
The steam turbine steam rate shall be based upon minimum initial steam
conditions at turbine inlet and maximum exhaust pressure as specified.

G. Couplings
1. The pump shaft shall be secured to the motor shaft by an all-metal, spacer
type, keyed coupling.
2. If the thrust bearing is in the driver or right angle gear, a rigid, adjustable,
flanged spacer type coupling shall be supplied. If the thrust bearing is
located in the pump discharge head, a flexible coupling shall be provided.
3. The pumps shall be provided with removable or hinged wire mesh or sheet
metal non-sparking coupling guards. Coupling guards shall be sufficiently
heavy and rigid in design to avoid contact with coupling or shaft as a result of
bodily contact. Guards shall comply with OSHA requirements.
Seal Flush
3. 18-8 stainless steel tubing shall be used for the flushing fluids to mechanical
seals, unless a higher corrosion resistance is required for the service.
4. Tube fittings and ferrules shall be 18-8 stainless steel, Crawford Swagelok or
Buyer approved substitute.
6. Minimum size for tubing and pipe shall be 13 millimeters (1/2 of an inch).
Minimum tubing wall thickness for 13, 16, and 19 millimeters (1/2, 5/8, and
3/4 of an inch) OD sizes shall be 1.65 millimeters (0.065 inches).
7. Pipe threads and tapped opening shall conform to ASME B1.20.1 and B16.5.
8. Tubing and pipe shall be cleaned with a suitable solvent prior to assembly on
the pumping unit.

9. Seal flush systems, including accessories such as gages and valves, shall be
furnished by Pump Supplier.
10. Pipe threads and tapped openings shall be no less than 13 millimeters (1/2 of
an inch) and shall conform to ASME B1.20.1 and B16.5.
6.1 Vibration
A. Peak-to-peak vibration limits shall apply to all pumps. These limits shall cover rotor
vibration during shop and field tests at rated speed and throughout the full operating
capacity. Peak-to-peak limits unfiltered measured on the shaft are the following:
B. Vibration readings shall be taken on the top flange of the driver mount on vertical
pumps with rigid couplings, and on the next to the top bearing on vertical pumps with
flexible couplings.
A. Pumps of stiff shaft construction, when coupled to the driver, shall have the first
critical speed at no less than 120 percent of maximum continuous speed.
B. Pumps of flexible shaft construction, when coupled to the driver, shall operate with
the first actual critical speed at no more than 60 percent of the maximum operating
speed, nor closer than 10 percent to any operating speed. The second actual critical
speed, when coupled to the driver, shall be at least 10 percent above the maximum
operating speed (including the trip speed of pumps with variable speed drivers).
When operating conditions may require reduced operating speeds, careful
consideration by the supplier shall be given to the location of the first actual critical
speed. Critical speed information shall be provided to Buyer.

B. Magnetic particle method shall be used for surface examination if the material is
ferromagnetic, and the surface is accessible for this method.
C. Liquid penetrant method shall be used for surface examination if the material is
nonmagnetic or not accessible for magnetic particle examination.
A. Austenitic stainless steel equipment, including stainless cladding or lining, shall have
controlled test water in order to prevent stress cracking.
1. Water containing more than 100 ppm chlorides shall not be used for test.
3. Water containing less than 50 ppm chloride does not require the use of an
inhibitor.
A. Costs for performance testing shall be shown as a separate item in the proposal.
B. Unless otherwise mutually agreed upon, the test speed of all pumps shall be the
rated speed. Allowable deviations only are Normal fluctuations of motor speed.
C. The performance test shall include a minimum of 5 test capacities extending from 0
flow to at least 125 percent of capacity at the best efficiency point. Capacity test
points shall generally be equally spaced and include 1 capacity no more than plus or
minus 5 percent from rated capacity.
D. The complete pumping assembly shall be guaranteed for pressure, capacity, and
power consumption at the specified rated operating conditions, water NPSH, and
satisfactory application in all respects to the operating conditions specified on the
individual pump datasheet. Permissible variations from the specified performance
are as follows (in percent of rated):
E. Each pump shall be checked for acceptable vibration during the factory running and
performance test in accordance with Section 6.1A.
F. Mechanical seals, when provided, shall be used during the running tests, but are not
required for the hydrostatic test.
G. The contract driver shall not be used for the performance test.

H. Buyer reserves the right to witness testing of all equipment on the Purchase Order.
A. NPSH tests shall be provided when specified. Non-witnessed NPSH test shall be
quoted if NPSHR is within 0.9 meters (3 feet) of NPSHA. Witnessed NPSH test shall
be quoted if NPSHR is within 0.3 meters (1 foot) of NPSHA.
C. Suppliers shall advise limits of their closed loop test system. A sketch of the closed
loop test system and the procedure for NPSH test shall be submitted for approval at
least 6 weeks prior to test date.
8.1 Nameplates

B. Each coupling half and spacer shall be electrically etched with the item number of the
purchased equipment for which it is intended.
C. Minimum flow orifices (when supplied) shall be impression stamped with Buyer’s flow
orifice item number.
D. A direction arrow should be permanently attached to the pump showing the direction
of rotation.
8.3 Tagging
A. Each item shall be identified with its PO number and item number. Tags shall be
corrosion resistant metal (not aluminum) and impression stamped with the following:
B. Tags shall be attached to each component with stainless steel wire. This tagging is in
addition to the equipment nameplate. Equipment shipped in fully enclosed containers
shall also include the above information marked on the outside of the container.
C. Miscellaneous parts shall be tagged or marked with the equipment item number for
which they are intended.
9.1 General
A. Pump bowl assembly, line shaft, pump barrel, and discharge head shall be shipped
fully assembled. Coupling spacers with bolts and other items, such as minimum flow
orifices that are not part of the pumping unit assembly, shall be separately boxed and
securely attached to the baseplate.
B. Drivers shall be mounted by Pump Supplier. After satisfactory alignment has been
verified and the drivers dowelled for reassembly, the drivers may be removed for
shipment. Drivers need not be dowelled if alignment is ensured by a register fit.
C. Piping systems shall be fully assembled and installed on the pump but may be
removed for shipment.
D. Any items removed for shipment shall be identified with the equipment tag number to
which it belongs. If alignments or fits ups are critical, Supplier shall match mark items
prior to disassembling.
F. Metal filter elements and screens shall be cleaned and reinstalled prior to shipment.
Nonmetallic filter elements shall be supplied installed in an unused condition.
G. Mechanical seals, carbon rings, and other sealing devices shall be installed for
shipment. If shaft packing is required, 2 sets of packing in unused condition shall be
supplied, 1 set installed and 1 set boxed and shipped attached to the equipment.
9.3 Painting
A. Stainless steel surfaces, glass, internal surfaces, and finished surfaces such as
flange faces, shafts, and couplings shall not be painted.
9.4 Preservation
A. Exposed finished and machined surfaces, including bolting and flange faces, shall be
given a heavy coating of rust inhibiting compound. Internal metal surfaces shall be
sprayed or coated with a suitable rust preventative.
B. Mechanical seals, bearing assemblies, and exposed ends of shafts shall be fully
protected from rusting and entry of moisture and dirt.

C. Desiccant crystals in bags shall be installed in large cavities such as inlet and
discharge nozzles to absorb water vapor. The desiccant bags shall be installed in
corrosion-resistant wire baskets affixed to metal flange covers. The flange cover shall
have a bulls-eye humidity indicator to allow monitoring of the condition of the
desiccant without removing the flange cover.
D. Flanged openings shall be provided with full size steel closures of 5 millimeters (3/16
of an inch) minimum thickness with full face rubber gaskets and at least 4 full
diameter bolts. Large diameter flanges (10 inches and above) shall have 10
millimeters (3/8 of an inch) thick full size steel covers with full face rubber gaskets
and 1 full size bolt in every other hole.
E. All threaded openings shall be plugged with long shank pipe plugs. Plug material
shall be equivalent to the material being plugged, except that carbon steel plugs shall
be used with openings in cast iron.
F. Open ends of tube and pipe shall be capped for protection with metal or plastic
covers designed for that purpose. Use of tape for covers is unacceptable.
9.5 Packing
A. Equipment shall be packed, securely anchored (skid mounted when required), and
weather-protected for the shipment method called for in the purchase order.
Separate, loose, or spare parts shall be boxed and each part individually protected
as required. Each individual container shall be marked both inside and outside with
the equipment number and service for which the parts are intended.
B. Each container shall also include a complete bill of material indentifying each part. In
some instances, such as instruments, specific tagging shall be required.
