323 Lab 2
For this lab you will need some measurements that I have done in my home lab, and some equations
from these web pages:

50 Rs Lm Cm
Vout
ac 50
Cp
Each of these crystals has an equivalent series resistance Rs of less than 20 ohms.
Using the equations in the references, find Cm and Lm for my two crystals.
Lab 2 assignment 1. Using your understanding of how a quartz crystal resonator works, start with the
calculated values for crystals #1 and #2 and select Cm and Lm for a similar new crystal that operates
at:
3k Vin Rs Lm Cm
Vout
ac 3k
Cp
220p 15p
Using LTspice and a very narrow linear ac simulation with 800 points over about 200 kHz that display
your series and parallel resonant frequencies, find the frequency at which the phase shift from Vin to
Vout is exactly 180 o.
Lab 2 Assignment 2: Expected oscillation frequency of a basic oscillator using your custom crystal.
Now add one component to your simulation, a series variable capacitor Cvar, set up as a variable in
your LTspice simulation so you can vary it from 2pF to 200pF
3k Vin {Cvar} Rs Lm Cm
Vout
ac 3k
Cp
220p 15p
o
Make a plot of Parallel Resonant Frequency, and the 180 phase shift frequency, versus capacitor
value Cvar.
Lab 2 Assignment 3: plot of expected oscillator frequency versus Cvar capacitance from 2pF - 200pF
Finally, replace the ideal variable capacitor Cvar with the capacitance vs voltage curve for a BBY40
varactor diode:

o
and plot the 180 phase shift frequency versus varactor diode reverse voltage.
Lab 2 Assignment 4: plot of expected oscillator frequency versus BBY40 diode reverse voltage.
