I. Context/ Rationale
Going to school regularly is important for a pupils’s education and social skills. Chronic
absentee pupils are placed at a disadvantage socially and academically. They miss out on critical
stages of social interaction and development with their peers and at the same time impacts
negatively on their academic progress which results to low self-esteem, social isolation and
dissatisfaction that will lead to precipitated non-attendance in the first place.
In the researcher’s station, Pelagio Jabel Memorial School (PJMS) which is located in
one of the highland areas of Tanjay City, Bahian, absenteeism is one of the alarming
problem. The researcher’s focuses on the Grade 5 class consisting of 24 boys and 24 girls,
making a total of 48. It has been observed within the researcher’s class that out of 48 pupils, only
30 or 63% of them attended the class regularly.
The society also suffers as the pupils of school hang around in the streets. They can be
found just gallivanting around. Since they have nothing to do, they resort to petty crimes like
stealing other people’s belongings and properties. Thus, if the pupils keeps on being away from
school for too long, he may grow up to be a liability of his community and of his country as a
whole.
In this study, the researcher notified several factors affecting the learning of the pupils
due to absenteeism. These are as follows: child labor, poverty, baby sitting, remote residence,
academic under- achievement and difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom and
loss of confidence. Pupils who are absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping out of
school early.
It is the aim of every school to lessen, if not eradicate absenteeism among its pupils. One
way of addressing this problem is to identify the causes why pupils become truant from school.
Once they are singled out, understood and analyzed, specific actions and measures can be
undertaken. This will eventually redound to the better performance of the pupils, teachers and the
school in general.
II. Action Research Questions
1. What are the possible causes of absenteeism among Grade V pupils of PJMS?
2. What are the effects of home visitation to the pupils who are always absent
during class days?
The general focus of the present study is to minimize the absenteeism through
intensive home visitation of Grade V pupils in PJMS.This was gathered from the data contained
in the daily attendance record being passed around and kept by the teacher-leader’s office every
day and is regularly filled up by the teachers in each grade level for the whole year. Now that
they are in Grade V, some of them are still frequent absentees. It is for this reason that this
research was undertaken. It has the end in view of understanding and correcting such undesirable
pupil behavior.
Pupils. Having a clearer view and first-hand experience of the teacher's performance, this will further
enhance pupil's knowledge of the importanceof mastering the basic skills of their competencies so they
will make an effort to do best. This may lead to better enthusiasm and develop good study habit.
Teachers. This study may heighten their awareness in identifying the learning tasks that are well
developed as well as the least. This may further be a motivating factor to adapt measures and new
School Administrator and Supervisors. Results of this investigation may encourage administrators
and supervisors help their teachers upgrade their teaching performance in improving reading
comprehension through closer supervision and faculty development and training programs.
Community. The result of this study may benefit the community in as much they know that the
teachers of their children are equipped with the necessary tools and competence in teaching them.
Researcher Himself. This may serve as inspiration in teaching his pupils above and beyond his
capacity.
Future Researcher. The information and insights that will be gained from this study may serve as
guide for other researcher in framing their conceptual framework and design and at the same time
This study used the descriptive survey method. A questionnaire was used to determin the causes
of absenteeism among the students where they rated each situation/reason/cause presented.
All the data gathered from the respondents were organized, tallied, tabulated and presented in a
series of tables and graphs. Frequency counts, percentage weight values and weighted mean were
used in the analysis and interpretation of data.
The responses of the pupils were analyzed using a 5-point Likert Scale with the following
equivalent:
1 -Never
2 -Rarely
3 -Sometimes
4 -Very Often
5 -Always
It is to be noted that the questionnaire given to the students were given in their native dialect in
order for them to understand better what they were answering, thus, giving more chances of
accurate responses.
The rounding of figures was done to signify classification of responses. The measure of central
tendency specifically the mean was used to determine the average value of response or response
average of the pupils.
Upon the approval of the Schools Division Research Committee, the researcher will
conduct the study in Pelagio Jabel Memorial School. This is chosen as the venue since the
researcher is one of the teachers in the said school.
This research needs an amount of 10,000 which is seen in the breakdown below.
The researcher also hopes that this research study will be used for archival purposes n the
Division of Tanjay.
