HISTORY
• Prehistoric man learnt to swim in order to
cross rivers and lakes – we know this due to
cave paintings from the Stone Age.
• Paintings found in Egypt depict people
swimming back in 2500 BCE.
• Swimming became an Olympic sport in
1896. The very first Olympic events were
freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke
was added in 1904.
• Women only started competing in the
Olympics swimming competitions in 1912.
• The first ever swimming race was held 2055
years ago in Japan.
1896
•Alfred Hajos of Hungary won the first gold medal in Swimming, in the 100 m freestyle.
1912
•Women were first allowed to swim in the 5th Olympic Games in Stockholm.
1943
•US ordered the reduction of fabric due to wartime shortages, resulting in the 1st two piece swimsuits.
1982
•Kristin Otto from East Germany won six gold medals, the most ever won by a woman.
2012
•Michael Phelps, an American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22
medals.

BENEFITS OF SWIMMING
• Recreational swimming can provide you with a low-impact
workout and it’s also a good way to relax and feel good.
• Swimming improves coordination, balance and posture
• Provides good low-impact therapy for some injuries and
conditions
• Health benefits include:
– keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress
off your body
– builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness
– helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs
