Similar Figures (A+V) ANS

1. The document discusses similar triangles and similar figures. It explains that if two figures are similar, the ratio of corresponding sides is equal to the scale factor k. 2. For similar triangles, the ratio of their areas is equal to the square of the scale factor k. The ratio of the volumes of similar solids is equal to the cube of the scale factor k. 3. Several examples are given of calculating the areas and volumes of similar figures using the properties of scale factors for similar shapes.

Area and volume of similar figures

From the previous section, we learnt that if two triangles are similar, the ratio of the their corresponding
sides will always be equal. This ratio can also be known as the factor / scale factor, k, of which the figure is
being dilated.
If the two triangles similar to one another, then the corresponding sides are being dilated by a factor of k as
shown in the diagram.
A
P
a c
h1 p r
h2

B C Q R
b q

AB = BC = AC
PQ QR PR Since ABC is similar to PQR,
a = b =c =k h
then 1 = k .
p q r h2
where k is scale factor.

Area of ABC = bh1 = b  h1 = k  k = k 2
Area of PQR qh2 q h2

In conclusion, if
(1) ABC is similar to PQR and
(2) the ratio of the corresponding sides of ABC to PQR is k
then

Area of ABC =  l1 
Area of PQR  l2 

 Volume of the similar figures

With the same argument, if solid A is similar to solid B and the ratio between the corresponding sides of
solid A to solid B is equal to k, then

Volume of solid A =  l A 
Volume of solid B  l B 
