Experiment 22 PDF

This document summarizes an experiment on a single-phase full wave rectifier circuit conducted by a group of 5 students. The aim was to design and analyze an uncontrolled single-phase rectifier. The circuit was built according to the diagram. Measurements found an average output voltage of 5.1V and RMS voltage of 9.25V, slightly different from theoretical calculations. Key design parameters for a single-phase full wave rectifier include the average and RMS output voltages, efficiency, and filter inductor size. For a 10kW rectifier, normal diodes would be best due to their low cost and small size for high voltage applications over 500V.

Aim of Experiment :
The aim of this experiment is to design and analysis of a single
uncontrolled rectifier.
Introduction :
Rectification is the process of conversion of alternating input voltage to
direct output voltage.
In diode rectifiers, the output voltage cannot be controlled .AC-DC
converter (Rectifiers) can be classified as:
- Half wave rectifier HWR
- Full wave rectifier FWR

These can further be classified depending upon the rectifying element

being used. If using diode, are called uncontrolled rectifiers. Whereas if
using thyristor, are called controlled rectifiers. The application of these
converts may include the following:
➔ Variable speed dc drives
➔ Battery chargers
➔ DC power supplies and power supply for a specific application like
laser sources, electronic sets.

Single-Phase FW uncontrolled rectifier:

Another type of uncontrolled rectifier is SPFWR or bridge rectifier, this type
of rectifier is shown in fig (1). During the positive half cycle of the supply
voltage, D1 and D2 are forward biased, the current i1 flow throw D1, load
D2. During the negative half cycle, D3 and D4 are forward biased and
supply current Is to the load.
Thus, at any time, there are two diode in series with the load, The PIV is
Vm.
The average and RMS voltage are:
2Vm Vm
Vd = And VL =
π √2
Procedure:

1. We connected the circuit in fig(1) of the single phase full wave

rectifier .
2. And after we had done with the connection we turned on the power.
3. Input and output waveforms are shown below:

4. After that we measured the average and RMS output voltage by

connecting the AVO meter across the load resistance.
• RMS output voltage= 9.25 V.
• Average output voltage= 5.1 V.
Discussion and Calculations:
1. Compare between the practical and theoretical results for input and
output voltages.

Answer:

Practical: 𝑉𝑑𝑐 = 𝑉𝑎𝑣𝑔 = 9.25 V

𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 = 5.1 V
𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 5.1
𝐹𝐹 = = = 0.551
𝑉𝑑𝑐 9.25
𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚
𝑉𝑑𝑐 𝐼𝑑𝑐 (2 )(2𝜋 𝑅 )
𝜋
µ= = 𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚 = 81.05%
𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠 ( )(2 )
√2 √2 𝑅

𝑉𝑚
𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 √2
Theoretical: 𝐹𝐹 = = 2 𝑉𝑚 = 1.11
𝑉𝑑𝑐
𝜋

𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚
𝑃𝑑𝑐 𝑉𝑑𝑐 𝐼𝑑𝑐 (2 𝜋
)(2𝜋 𝑅)
µ= = = 𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚 = 81.05%
𝑃𝑎𝑐 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠 ( )(2 )
√2 √2 𝑅

2.What are design parameters of the full wave single-phase rectifier?

Answer:
2 𝑉𝑚
𝑉𝑑𝑐 = =10.34 V
𝜋
𝑉𝑚
𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 = =11.49 V
√2
𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚
𝑃𝑑𝑐 𝑉𝑑𝑐 𝐼𝑑𝑐 (2 )(2 )
µ= = = 𝜋 𝜋 𝑅 = 81.05%
𝑃𝑎𝑐 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝐼𝑟𝑚𝑠 (𝑉𝑚 )(2 𝑉𝑚 )
√2 √2 𝑅
𝑉𝑚
𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 √2
𝐹𝐹 = = 2 𝑉𝑚 = 1.11
𝑉𝑑𝑐
𝜋

Rf=√𝐹𝐹2 − 1 = √1.112 − 1 = 0.481

3.When you design 10kW rectifier, what type of rectifier must
be use? Why?

Answer:
With low voltage design, active rectification and MOSFETs are better to
be used.
But with high voltage design 500V or higher, it’s better to choose normal
diodes. High voltage diodes are super cheap and small but still quite
effective.
