WARNING
LOSS OF CONTROL
The designer of any control scheme must consider the potential failure modes
of control paths and, for certain critical control functions, provide a means to
achieve a safe state during and after a path failure. Examples of critical control
functions are emergency stop and overtravel stop.
Separate or redundant control paths must be provided for critical control
functions.
System control paths may include communication links. Consideration must be
given to the implications of unanticipated transmission delays or failures of the
link.*
Each implementation of a Magelis XBTGT, HMISTO, HMISTU, HMIGTO,
HMIGTU, XBTGH, XBTGK, XBTGC, iPC, and XBTGTW must be individually
and thoroughly tested for proper operation before being placed into service.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.
* For additional information, refer to NEMA ICS 1.1 (latest edition), “Safety
Guidelines for the Application, Installation, and Maintenance of Solid State Control.“

Use the following serial interface diagrams in combination with the cable diagrams
in Section 3 to wire connections between the target machine and external
equipment.
Magelis iPC Series (Smart, Compact, and Flex) and XBTGTW Series
The iPC Series (Smart, Compact, and Flex) and the XBTGTW Series target
machines come with one to four COM ports. All serial ports use 9-pin D-Sub male
connectors and support RS-232C serial communication. The following table
illustrates the pin layout for these target machines.

UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
When making your own connections, use shielded RJ45 connectors. The shielded
connector provides isolation against electromagnetic interference and provides a
more secure physical connection in the RJ45 socket. Use of an improper RJ45
connection could lead to insecure connections.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.

The serial port is not isolated. The SG (signal ground) and FG (frame ground)
terminals are connected inside the unit.
When using the SG terminal to connect an external device to the panel:
Verify that a ground loop is not created when you set up the system.
Connect the #8 SG terminal to remote equipment when the host (PLC) unit is
not isolated. Connect the #8 SG terminal to a known reliable ground connection
to reduce the risk of damaging the circuit.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious injury.

Cable Diagrams
The cable diagrams illustrated below and the cable diagrams recommended by
Panasonic may differ, however, Schneider Electric recommends using the following
connection diagrams.
Ground the PLC’s FG terminal according to your country’s applicable standard.
For details, refer to the PLC manual.
When making your own communication cable, be sure to connect the SG signal.
Note:
When signal lines overlap as drawn below, it indicates a twisted pair.

DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK
Ensure that the ground connection for each component of interconnected
equipment is reliably connected to the same ground potential (within 100 ohms)
prior to connecting the equipment. There is a risk of electric shock when
connecting a PLC cable to a target machine, as the two may be at different
electrical potentials, even if both are separately connected to ground.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious injury.
WARNING
UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
To reduce electromagnetic interference, use shielded twisted-pair cables. Connect
the cable shields, then connect the cable to a single-point ground on the HMI side.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.

WARNING
*1 LOSS OF CONTROL
Communication links may be compromised when you exceed the manufacturer’s
recommended maximum cable length 3m (10 ft) for multicommunication units
(AFP2465 in FP2 and FP2SH), that communicate at transmission speeds 115200
bps or greater.
Because excess electromagnetic interference is the result of such a setup, the
system may become unpredictable as it experiences periodic interference and
intermittent loss of control.
When using multicommunication units at a fast transmission speed, make sure the
cable length is less than 3m (10ft).
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.

UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
Read and understand the instructions in this section to ensure data is properly
transferred. If you do not follow these instructions, incorrect data could be written
to the PLC and the target machine.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.

Address Keypad. For actual device address ranges supported by the PLC, refer to
the corresponding PLC manual.

*1 Read-modify-write. When you write to one of these bit addresses, the target
machine reads the entire word address, sets the defined bit, then returns the new
value to the PLC. If the ladder program writes data to this word address during
the bit read/write process, the resulting data may be incorrect.
*2 Read only.
*3 You can define a bit address by defining the bit position using a hexadecimal
value at the end of a word address.
*4 Relay (bit) devices can only be used in Discrete or Integer data type variables.
*5 When using Timer and Counter devices with FP-M CPUs, set up each device
range in the system register.

equipment damage.
To configure the communication settings of the serial driver in the target machine,
use the [Driver Configuration] dialog box. Make sure the settings match those of the
PLC.
For an overview of the driver and device settings, see Environment Setup.
Note:
For information on how to display the [Driver Configuration] dialog box, see the
Vijeo Designer Help.

Screen Description
Area Description
Manufacturer Displays the name of the PLC manufacturer.
Driver Displays the type of serial connection used to connect the target
machine to the PLC. This property is read-only.
COM Port Defines which COM port to use on the target machine, for connecting to
the PLC.
Serial Interface Defines the serial connection: RS-232C, RS-485 (2-wire) or RS-422 (4-
wire).
For details about the supported connections, see Magelis HMIGTU.
Flow Control Defines the signals that control the data flow.
Transmission Sets the communication speed in bits per second. This setting must
Speed match the PLC baud rate.
Retry Count Defines the number of times the driver tries to send or receive data when
an error has been detected.
Parity Bit Sets either a parity bit [Even or Odd] for use in detecting communication
errors, or [None] at all.
Stop Bit Defines the stop bit: 1, 1.5, or 2 bits.
Data Length Defines the length of each unit of data: 7 bit or 8 bit.
Rcv. Timeout Defines the length of time the target machine waits for a response before
it outputs a timeout error or sends another communication.
TX Wait Time Defines the number of milliseconds that the target machine waits, after
receiving a communication packet, before sending a response.

Read and understand the instructions in this section to ensure data is properly
transferred. If you do not follow these instructions, incorrect data could be written
to the PLC and the target machine.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.
To set up details about the communication process between the target machine and
the PLC, use the [Equipment Configuration] dialog box.
For an overview of the driver and equipment settings, see Environment Setup.

Unit No. Enter a value (1-99) to identify the PLC unit.
Frame Length Select either long or short to specify frame length.
Enable Monitor Select to use Monitor Registration with the PLC in order to increase
Registration communication efficiency.
Double Word word The default value is Low word first.
order To define the transmit order for 16-bit words:
least significant = byte n
most significant = byte n + 1
(Check that the connected equipment uses the same format.)
To define the transmit order for 32-bit words:
least significant = word n
most significant = word n + 1
(Check that the connected equipment uses the same format.)
If High word first is selected, the most significant word and the least
significant word are inverted. For example, to be consistent with
Premium PLC format, use the default value Low word first.
ASCII Display The default value is High byte first.
Byte order Inside PLCs, a STRING is usually an array of words for which every
word contains two characters (one character per byte). For example,
the HELLO! string representation is the following:
If Low byte first option is selected, the string displayed on the target
machine screen is: HELLO!.
If High byte first option is selected, the string displayed on the
target machine screen is: EHLL!O.
Note:
Not all FP Series PLCs support Frame Length and Enable Monitor Registration.
For details, refer to the PLC manual.
