Derive the Karnaugh-map for the 7447 decoder (without the LT, BI/RBO, nor RBI inputs) and give the
expressions using NAND gates. Obtain the internal equivalent circuit for the 7447. Compare your figure
with that in the data sheets.
Answer: The
a = (A’C’(BD)’(B’D’)’)’
b = (B(C’D’)’(CD)’)’
c = (B’CD’)’
d = ((B’D’)’(CD’)’(BC’D)’(B’C)’(A)’)’
e = ((B’D’)’(CD’)’)’
f = (A’(C’D’)’(BC’)’(BD’)’)’
g = ((B’C)’(CD’)’(BC’)’A’)’
Answer: The Lamp Test (LT) feature activates all segments given that the Ripple Blank Input is not active.
The Ripple Blank Input (RBI) turns off the segment if it is activated. This can be used in conjunction with
the Ripple Blank Output (RBO) of the next digit so that leading zeros can be suppressed.
3. Show how you would connect a 3-digit display such that any leading zeroes will be suppressed.
Answer: The Ripple Blank Output of the leading digit must be connected to the Ripple Blank Input of the
next digit. The digits can be connected as shown:

4. What is intensity modulation? What is the advantage of this method over using the potentiometer to
adjust the brightness of the LED?
Answer: Intensity modulation, sometimes called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), is a method for
adjusting the brightness of an LED while utilizing a fixed current source. This is much safer for powering
an LED than using a potentiometer because it eliminates the possibility of overcurrent.
5. Is it possible to use seven individual resistors for better series limiting? How would you compute for
the resistance?
Answer: Yes. The resistances can be computed by determining the current desired through a single LED.
