Question 1
The composition of the feed to a debutaniser is given below. Make a preliminary design for a
column to recover 98 mol% of the n-butane overhead and 95 mol% of the isopentane from the
column base. The column is operating at 14 bar and the feed will be at its boiling point. Use the
short-cut methods and follow the procedure set out below.
(a) Calculate the minimum number of theoretical stages.
(b) Calculate the minimum optimum reflux ratio.
(c) Determine the number of stages if the reflux ratio used R = 1.3Rmin.
(d) Estimate the feed point.
Feed condition:
Components Feed flow rate (kg/hr) Volatility (K-value)
Propane C3 910 1.29
Isobutane i-C4 180 0.59
n-butane n-C4 270 0.445
Isopentane i-C5 70 0.208
n-pentane n-C5 90 0.17
n-hexane n-C6 20 0.062
Question 2
For the deethanizer in the figure below, estimate the number of stages by assuming R = 1.25Rmin.
The boiling point of the feed is 90 °F.
