HOW CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

MANAGEMENT WILL ENHANCE MY
CONTRIBUTION TO ZAMBIA`S DEVELOPMENT

BY MOYO MACDONALD
Abstract

Construction engineers design and execute processes for building and maintaining the
infrastructure of our world. The tools of the trade for today’s successful construction
engineer include the following: strong math, science, and computer skills; creativity;
an aptitude for applying science and engineering methods to solve problems; a love of
building structures, an interest in working indoors and outdoors; initiative and a
strong work ethic; the ability to collaborate with diverse people; good
communications skills; and a desire to learn in a constantly changing environment.
Students of Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) have the opportunity
to develop additional construction and engineering expertise. It is the responsibility of
the Construction Engineering and Manager to deliver these projects in a manner that
maximizes value – a quality product at a fair price, safely constructed in a timely
fashion..
Aims and Objectives
To show the expertise and skills a well trained Construction Engineering Manager
offers.
To show how Construction Engineering Managers bring a certain quality of
development.
INTRODUCTION

What Does a Construction Engineering Manager Do?

Construction engineering managers are key players in the successful completion of
construction projects. Over the course of his or her career, a construction engineering
manager is likely to work on and oversee a broad range of projects. This may include
the design of drainage and sewage systems, building construction, or even larger
infrastructure projects like developing highways or railroads.

Professional Skills and Expertise

Construction engineering managers must possess a thorough understanding of laws,
regulations, and building codes. They must also be able to estimate the total cost of a
given project with consideration to:
Site inspections Drainage, sewage, and elevation level tests Equipment and materials.
Construction engineering managers are also responsible for managing the workings of
various other entities involved in the project. They are responsible for providing
expert supervision from beginning to end while also keeping the project running on or
ahead of schedule and within budget. The job requires strong leadership and
interpersonal skills and attention to detail.

As with other areas of construction, the job of a construction engineering manager is

in demand and experiencing growth. According to certain studies the construction
industry is expected to see upwards of 20 percent growth over the next 8 to 10 years.
That alone will expand the need for qualified managers at every level of the
construction process.

Construction is the largest industry in the United States. It provides jobs to millions
ranging in all types of education and makes 14% of the countries Gross National
Product.

Engineering construction (certainly at the level of clients and engineering,

procurement and construction contractors) is a truly global endeavour. Multinational
and multicultural projects are the norm encompassing a wide range of disciplines in
addition to civil and structural engineering such as mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering, control and systems engineering, structural and pipe fabricators,
contractor services and logistics. Engineering construction has a substantial
proportion of mega-projects (projects with a delivered value of greater than $0.5
billion). For example, the final cost of Shell’s Pearl GTL project in Qatar is estimated
at over $20 billion.
CONCLUSION

Being an effective construction manager involves much more than just reading
blueprints or spot-checking the quality of work being done. Good ones are
knowledgeable about all standard building codes and often must be familiar with the
latest construction practices, including environmentally friendly design and building.
They need to be adept with industry-specific software and have a good working
knowledge of all aspects of the job in general.

Better trained Construction Engineering Managers would also mean a better quality of
through out all the construction process, reducing the dependency on foreign
construction companies meaning more projects for the Zambian construction
companies and becoming another source of employment for the people.
