I. INTRODUCTION
Poverty is a major problem in most countries especially those that belong to the
underdeveloped countries. We see it everywhere. all around the world. But what is poverty?
What causes it? And can we really do anything about it? If we’re going to solve poverty— we
must first understand what it is.

Poverty has many definitions depending on the views of the one who is defining it. So the
following are definitions of poverty from the World Bank, and the United Nations.

“Poverty is pronounced deprivation in well-being, and comprises many dimensions. It includes

low incomes and the inability to acquire the basic goods and services necessary for survival with
dignity. Poverty also encompasses low levels of health and education, poor access to clean
water and sanitation, inadequate physical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacity and
opportunity to better one’s life.” —World Bank

“Fundamentally, poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It

means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to
feed and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to
grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity,
powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means
susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living in marginal or fragile environments, without
access to clean water or sanitation.” —United Nations

As defined by the two global organizations, poverty may be the lack of money and the ability to
afford basic human needs, such as nutrition, health care, education, clothing, shelter and clean
water. It can also be defined as the inability to access justice, security and opportunity to life
betterment.

The following things have been allegedly attributed to poverty in the Philippines:

Overpopulation is the fruit of the lack of self-control.

Low revenue collection is a result of an ineffective taxing system.

Pork barrel is the output of a poor political system.

Corruption is a fruit of greed.

Poor investment climate is the consequence of inefficient regulatory, legal and political
framework of doing business in the Philippines.

War, terrorism and peace problems are the effect of misunderstanding.

Unemployment is the fruit of poverty itself. It is also the effect of laziness and lack of
resourcefulness.

Poor health is another consequence of the lack of self-control, discipline and poverty itself.

Abuse of our environment is another fruit of greed.

Poor quality education is another consequence of poverty itself. It is also the fruit of the lack of
patience, resourcefulness and hard work.

Low financial literacy rate is the consequence of the lack of government programs to enhance
financial education in the Philippines.

Lack of Filipino entrepreneurs is caused by the inability of the government to provide financial
grants to small, new and aspiring entrepreneurs. This is also the result of the lack of patience
and willingness of people to face business risks despite of the unlimited opportunities offered
by entrepreneurship.

Lack of government support for small entrepreneurs is just another result of poor national
governance.

Laziness and procrastination are results of the lack of value and interest.

Dependence is the consequence of the absence of self-trust and confidence.

Lack of self-control is the the absence of love.

Lack of love for God is caused by not knowing God.

Problem-Solving: Alternative ways to lessen poverty in
Philippines

Poverty and inequality in the Philippines remains a challenge. In the past four decades, the
proportion of households living below the official poverty line has declined slowly and unevenly.

Economic growth has gone through boom and bust cycles, and recent episodes of moderate
economic expansion have had limited impact on the poor. Great inequality across income
brackets, regions, and sectors, as well as unmanaged population growth, are considered some
of the key factors constraining poverty reduction efforts.

Based on the latest statistical data on poverty and socioeconomic development in the
Philippines, the Asian Development Bank has a recorded from the National Statistics Authority
In the Philippines, that 21.6% of the population lives below the national poverty line in 2015;
that a proportion of employed population below $1.90 purchasing power parity a day in 2012 is
10.8% *(When we think about poverty, we usually think economics. The poor are those without
resources. In fact, The World Bank defines extreme poverty as, "living on less than $1.90 a day."
The $1.90 figure represents the purchasing power parity (PPP) which is a metric used to
compare relative purchasing power.) and for every 1,000 babies born in the Philippines in 2015,
22 die before their first birthday.

How to end poverty is a great task for each in every individual. Educating ourselves is just the
start.
The lack of principles, attitudes, values, actions and habits to become rich”, the fear of the Lord
will give us wisdom which are made of powerful principles. These principles will give us the light
to guide us in making the right decisions in life towards development. When we made the right
decisions, we make the right actions that will make our lives better. And when we practice those
actions consistently, those become our habits shape our lives to long-term development,
personally, spiritually and financially.

What we need is to take actions and be part of the change. Once you’ve managed to change
yourself for the better, you’re now liable to educate and inspire others as well. Providing
solutions to poverty cannot be done by one man alone. We Filipinos should all be responsible
solving the major causes of poverty in the Philippines.

III.Conclusion
As a young students we would like to suggest some factors which would be helpful in our journey to
reduce poverty. Basically we have to take necessary steps to reduce the population in our world.
Natural resources don’t increase according to the population which is increasing at a high speed.
When we consider the families in poor countries, they have at least six or seven kids. But those kids
do not have a proper health or the parents cannot provide proper education for them. And also those
parents cannot provide good foods filled with suitable nutrients to their kids due to lack of wealth.
Because of that their healthiness decreases by a considerable amount. The development of their
brains becomes insufficient and due to that their ability to get a proper education decreases.

So taking necessary steps to develop health and education sectors in these countries is a good way
to reduce poverty. So firstly we have to develop services for pregnant women of those countries and
provide them good foods filled with proper nutrients to keep the babies in good health. And then the
kids will be in good health and their brains will be in a better condition to get a proper education.
Developing the education sectors of those countries with the help of charity services and the
governments of developed countries is also a good step to develop education systems in those
countries. When we take a look at the situation of education in a number of African countries affected
by poverty we see: language barriers; a lack of proper facilities; and military conflicts.

Increasing the number of organizations which are working to reduce poverty by educating people of
developed countries to be organized and to take actions related to this matter is also another
suggestion of mine. Encouraging people who have volunteered to provide facilities such as pure
water, foods filled with nutrients, living places to poor people and who’re conducting charity services
to develop the lives of them, by offering special rewards and admiring them in various ways would be
a good way to increase the number of voluntary workers. So I believe my opinions and suggestions
would be a good help to conclude poverty. As a young student I would like to suggest some factors

and take every action with responsibility. Every change starts with every individual and If we can
change ourselves for the better then we will be able to educate and inspire others as well. Thus, our
country will gradually grow and progress.
