What is the Module About ?

Money used in everyday life may involve decimals. When dealing with money, it is

important to know your decimals.

This module is divided into 2 lessons

Lesson 1 – Addition of Decimals involving money

Lesson 2 – Subtraction of Decimals involving money

What Will You Learn From This Module?

After studying this module, you should be able to:

♦ write decimals in words and symbols;

♦ compare the value of the digits of a decimal;

♦ add and subtract decimals; and

♦ solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of

Lesson 1

Addition of Decimals

Have you visited the grocery and purchase food for weekly consumption? Have notice

the prices? It involves decimals. And the money that you will use to pay your groceries is also

use decimals.

In this lesson you will learn how to add decimals. After studying this lesson, you should
be able to:

♦ add decimal numbers; and

♦ solve problems involving addition of decimals and money.

Let’s Study and Analyze

Adding decimals involving money is just like adding whole numbers. Study the examples

shown below.

Let’s Learn

Money is also expressed in decimals. The process of adding money should then be the

same as adding decimals. Here are following example.

EXAMPLE 1

Find the sum of Php 7.85 and Php 5.16

SOLUTION Arrange the decimals in a column. Align the Decimal points.

+ 5.16

Php 13.01

Add: 5+6 = 11 hundredths. Write 1 below the hundredths column and

Regroup 1 tenths to the tenths place.

Add: 1+8 +1 = 10 tenths. Write 0 below the tenths column and regroup

1 to the ones place

Add: 1+7+5 =13. Write 13 below the ones column.

Write Php

The sum is Php 13.01.

Example 2

Find the sum. Php 143.649 and Php 20.890

SOLUTION Arrange the decimals in a column. Align the decimal points.

+ 20. 890

Php 164.539

Add: 9+0 = 9 thousandths. Write 9 below the thousandths column


Add 4+9= 13 hundredths. Write 3 below the hundredths column and

regroup 1 to tenths place

Add: 1+6 +8 = 15 tenths. Write 5 below the tenths column and regroup

1 to the ones place

Add: 1+3+0 =4. Write 4 below the ones column.

Add 4+2= 6. Write 6 below the tens column

Bring down 1. Write in hundreds column

The sum is Php 164.539.

EXAMPLE 1

Elena bought buy 2 kilos of kaong for Php 150.00, 5 packs of balikutsa for Php 62.50 and

3 packs of kalamay for Php 300. How much should she pay in all items she bought?

We need to follow the steps in solving the problem

Step 1: Determine what is asked.


The total amount Elena spent in all the items she bought

Step 2: Write all the given information

Php 150.00 for 2 kilos of kaong

Php 62.50 for 5 packs of balikutsa

Php 60.00 for 3 packs of pinya kendi

Step 3: What operation to be used:

Addition

Step 4: Solution

+ Php 300.00 for 3 packs of pinya kendi

Step 5: Answer

Php 412.50 is the total amount Elena spent in all.

EXAMPLE 2

Aling Marita had fruit and vegetable stand. She had total sales Php 6,500.00 for dragon

fruit, Php 1,200.00 total sales for eggplant and Php 2,000.00 total sales for calamansi. How much

was her total sales?

Step 1: Determine what is asked.

The total amount of Aling Marita’s sales.

Step 2: Write all the given information

Php 6,500.00 for dragon fruit


Php 1,200.00 for eggplant

Php 2, 000.00 for calamansi

Step 3: What operation to be used:

Addition

Step 4: Solution

Php 6,500.00 for dragon fruit


Php 1,200.00 for eggplant
+ Php 2,000.00 for calamansi
Php 8,000.00

Step 5: Answer

Php 8,000.00 her total sales.
