1. The document discusses various topics related to pavement design including: 2. The key difference between empirical and analytical pavement design methods and why the empirical method is preferred. 3. The differences in how tire loading is represented between conventional analytical design and methods using Stress-In-Motion systems and the implications for design and analysis. 4. Differences in loading between road, airfield and industrial pavements and how to discuss these using a table.

CLOSED BOOK [67]

1.(a) Discuss the difference in approach in developing an empirical and an analytical

pavement design method, and explain why designers favour the empirical method.
[3] :
(b) Describe the difference between the representation of tyre loading as used in the
conventional analytical (ELSYM) pavement design, and the new knowledge obtained
from the Stress-ln-Motion (SIM) (or previously known VRSPTA) system>A!so review
the implications of this for pavement design and analysis. [6]
(c) Give four differences between the loading on road pavements, ajragrtjjave ments_
and industrial floors, and briefly discuss these. Suggest using a table with four
columns giving the difference, and under each facility discuss the differences. [4]
(d) Briefly describe the factors that play a role in determining the PCN for a rigid pavement
of an airfield. [3]

2. (a) vGive four methods of deterioration of stabilised jayers_jn a pavement, and briefly
discuss test methods at the design stage to contra! each of these types of
deterioration. [6]
> (b) ^Sketch the relative behaviour (effective modulus), of a C/V and a C4 material during the
life of a facility on the same graph, and describe the different states. Also indicate the
distresses that would be evident. [3]
(c Briefly discuss two mechanisms that cause deformation of roads due to active
) subgrade. (2)
Briefly discuss six measures to limit the impact of active subgrade. (6)
(d) Explain the following:
(i) , 88% bulk density
(ii) - 95% Mod AASHTO density . . (2)
