Elements of Vertical Curve Design

A vertical curve is designed between grades of -2.0% and 1.0% with a PVI at station 110+00 and elevation 420 ft. The required elevation at station 112+00 is 424.5 ft. The length of the curve is calculated to be 13.466 stations or 1346.6 ft. The PVC is located at station 103+26.7 with an elevation of 433.47 ft. The PVT is located at station 116+73.3 with an elevation of 426.733 ft.

Example-2
• An equal-tangent vertical curve is to be
constructed between grades of -2.0%
(initial) and +1.0% (final). The PVI is at
station 110 + 00 and at elevation 420
ft. Due to street crossing the roadway,
the elevation of the roadway at station
112 + 00 must be at 424.5 ft. Design
the curve.
Figure
Given
• Initial grade G1 “b” = -2.0%
• Final Grade “G2” = +1.0%
• Stationing of the PVI = 110 + 00
• Elevation of the PVI = 420-ft
• Elevation at 112 + 00 stationing “y” = 424.5 ft
• Distance between PVI and point of
Intersection “x” = 0.5 L + 2
Required
• Stationing of the PVC = ?
• Elevation of the PVC “c” = ?
• Stationing of the PVT = ?
• Elevation of the PVT = ?
• Length of the Curve “L”= ?
Stationing of PVC
• Stationing of the PVI = stationing of PVC +
L/2
110 + 00 = Station of PVC + L/2
Station of PVC = [110 + 00 ] – L/2 eq (a)
To find “L” it is required to use parabolic eq
y = ax2+ bx+ c eq (b)
𝐺2 −𝐺1
here: a = 2𝐿
1 − (−2) 1.5
a= =
2(𝐿) 𝐿
Length of Curve
“c” is the Elevation of PVC
Elevation of PVI = Elevation of PVC + G%
*(Stationing b/w PVC & PVI)
420 = c + (-2)*(L/2)
c = 420 + L eq (c)
b = G1 = -2.0%
x = 0.5L + 2
By using eq (b)
Length of Curve
y = ax2+ bx+ c eq (b)
1.5
424.5 = 0.5𝐿 + 2 2 + −2 0.5𝐿 + 2 + (420 + L)
𝐿
424.5𝐿 = 1.5 (0.25𝐿2 + 4 + 2𝐿) − 𝐿2 − 4𝐿 + 420L + 𝐿2
0 = 0.375 𝐿2 + 6 + 3𝐿 − 8.5𝐿
0 = 0.375 𝐿2 − 5.5 𝐿 + 6
L = 13.466or L = 1.187
So
L = 13.466 stations = 1346.60-ft
PVC
By using eq (a)
Station of PVC = [110 + 00 ] – L/2 eq (a)
Station of PVC = [110 + 00] – (13+46.6)/2
Station of PVC = [110 + 00] – (6 + 73.3)
Station of PVC = 103 + 26.7
For Elevation of PVC, using eq (c)
c = 420 + L eq (c)
c = 420 + 13.466
c = 433.47 ft
PVT
Station of PVT = Station of PVI + L/2
Station of PVT = [110 + 00] + (6 + 73.3)
Station of PVT = 116 + 73.3
For Elevation of PVT
Elevation of PVT = Elevation of PVI +
G2%*(Distance b/w PVI and PVT)
Elevation of PVT = 420 + (1)*(6.733)
Elevation of PVT = 426.733 ft
Check
• Elevation check at station 112 + 00
By using equation (b)
y = ax2+ bx+ c eq (b)
Here
x= 0.5 L +2 = (0.5 * 13.466) +2 = 8.733
a = 1.5/L = 1.5/13.466 = 0.111
y = (0.111)(8.733)2 + (-2)(8.733) + 433.47
y = 424.5 ft
