YEAR 5 ENGLISH WORKSHEET
Read the recipe on how to make ‘Lolo’ bun and do the exercises that
follow:

Yummy ‘Lolo’ Buns Recipe

Written by Apolonia. Nasau, Iowane Selala and Paula Tikoibua (CCTC)

Ingredients
 4 cups plain flour
 5 teaspoons yeast
 1 half cup sugar
 2 cups luke warm water
 1 litre coconut milk squeezed out of freshly scraped or grated coconuts
Method
 In the mixing bowl, mix the dry ingredients: flour, yeast and sugar
 Pour 2 cups luke warm water with the dry ingredients and mix them
together
 Knead into a dough until it is smooth and fluffy
 Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and cut in half
 Continue cutting dough until you have 20 equal sized pieces.
 Roll dough into balls and transfer to a greased large pot.
 Cover with a tea towel and let them sit in a warm, draft-free room 30
minutes until puffed
 Pour the coconut milk into the pot until it is leveled with the rolled
dough.
 Cook in medium heat for twenty minutes.

Before you do the next set of exercises, revise the parts of speech
with a poem.

The Nine Parts of Speech Poem

Three little words you often see,


Are articles – a, an, and the.
A noun’s the name of anything;
As: school, garden, toy, or swing.
An adjective tells the kind of noun
As: great, small, pretty, white, or brown.
Instead of nouns, the pronouns stand
Her head, his face, your arm, my hand.
Verbs tell of something to be done,
To read, write, count, sing, jump, or run
How things are done the adverbs tell,
As: slowly, quickly, badly, or well.
Conjunctions join words together,
As students and teachers, wind or weather.
The prepositions stand before
A noun, as at or through the door.
The interjections show surprise,
As Wow! How pretty! Oh! How wise!
The whole are called nine parts of speech,
Which Reading, Writing, Speaking teach!

Pronouns are words that we use instead of a noun. A
personal pronoun is used to replace the names of people or
things that perform actions. Common Personal Pronouns
include: I, me, he, she, it, him, her, you, we, they, them.

An article is a word used before a noun to clarify the noun.
There are three words that are articles: the, a, an; “ a” is used
before a word that starts with a consonant sound; “ an” is
used before a word that starts with a vowel sound

Three Types of Sentences

1. A simple sentence has one complete thought .

The boy ran to the store.

2. A compound sentence has two complete thoughts joined


with a conjunction.
The boy ran to the store, and his sister stayed at home.

3. A complex sentence has one complete thought plus a


dependent clause.

The boy ran to the store where he bought milk .
