Exploded Views - A4

An exploded view is a configuration in SolidWorks that shows how an assembly's parts are assembled by moving them apart in steps. To create one, first define a new view of the assembly, then use the Exploded View tool to select and move parts in different directions as desired. Exploded views can be edited, collapsed/expanded, and have connecting lines added between related features for clarity. They are saved within the assembly file as configurations that can be selected.

SolidWorks Exploded Views

An exploded view is a useful way of showing how assemblies are put

together.
Exploded views are saved as a type of “configuration” within the assembly
file. You don’t need to save the ‘explode’ as a separate file.

Defining a view.
Exploded views typically only work from a specific point of
view, so first define the view to use.
• Get the assembly on the screen in the desired
orientation.
• Press the SpaceBar. An Orientation dialogue
window should appear.
• Click on the New View icon (second from left at the
top)
• Give the view a name, such as “Exp”
• You can now access this view from the View
Orientation button at the top of the screen.

Creating an Exploded View

• From the Assembly menu, click
on Exploded View.
• Make sure the Regular Step
button is chosen (the left-hand of
the two).

• Near the bottom of the box make sure that

Select subassembly parts is not ticked.
• In the graphics area select a part or a sub-assembly
• A triad and a couple of circles should
appear. These define the directions that
you can move the parts in the ‘explode’

• If they are not aligned with a direction

you want, highlight the Explode Direction
box, and select an edge on a part that is
aligned with a direction you want to move
the parts.

• The triad should now be aligned in the way you want.

• Now drag one of the arrows to move the part/subassy in the direction you want.
• Click on Done
• Click on another part and repeat….
• If you want to move two or
more parts by the same
amount, select them both (use
the CTRL key to select the
second, third etc.)
• Do as many steps as you want
so that all of the parts you
want to show are visible.

Exploding and Collapsing

Exploded Views
• Right Click at the top level of
the Design Tree.
• Down the list you will see
Collapse and Animate
Collapse.
• If you use Animate Collapse don’t forget to close the ‘playback’ dialogue box at the
top of the screen.

• To explode the view again, Right Click at the top level of the Design.
• Down the list you will see Explode and Animate Explode.
• Again, don’t forget to close the
playback box if you animate the
explode.

I want to edit it, Where is it?

• Exploded views are saved as
configurations of the assembly.
• Select the Configuration
Manager tab, then click on the ►
symbol to the left of the Default
configuration.
• Any exploded views should
be listed.
• To select which exploded
view to use, double-click on
it.

Editing an Exploded View

• Right-click on the exploded view and
select Edit Feature.
• When you are in the Explode dialogue box, you can right-click on any of the
Explode Steps and edit it.

Adding Lines to Exploded Views

In a complex assembly, it may be difficult to tell how parts are linked, such as which screw
fits into which hole, you can add chain lines to indicate this.
• Make sure your assembly is in the exploded
state.
• From the Assembly commands, click on
Explode Line Sketch. (this is a pull-down
underneath Exploded View)
• Zoom in so that you can clearly see the
items you wish to connect.
• Make sure that the Items To Connect box
is highlighted.
• If you want to connect two cylindrical features, such as
a hole and a pin, then select the circular edge of the
hole and the circular edge of the pin.
• A chain line will be drawn between the centres of these
two circles.

Editing an Exploded Line Sketch

Exploded line sketches are 3D sketches, and are saved as
part of the exploded view.
• Select the configuration manager
• Find the exploded view (see “I want to
edit it…” left) and double-click on it to
make it current.
• The Explode Line Sketch appears as an
item called 3DExplode1 under the
exploded view (ExpView1)
• To edit it, right-click on it and select Edit
Sketch.
