Introduction
The Sanitary Engineering Department of the College of Engineering and Technology conducted
5-Day Seminar/Workshop on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) as requested by the Sangguniang
Barangay of Salog, Goa, Camarines Sur held last September 27 to October 1, 2017 at the Covered Court,
Salog, Goa, Camarines Sur. The activity focused on WaSH promotion to the community. The topics
covered were the following: WaSH overview and its components: water, hygiene, excreta disposal,
vector control, solid waste management and drainage. Due to limited time, the said activity focused
more on Water Quality – sources, contamination, testing and analyses as well as the proper solid waste
management.
Objectives
To provide information for WASH overview and its components: water, hygiene, excreta
disposal, vector control, solid waste management and drainage;
To provide the water quality standards based from existing laws and regulations (Philippine
National Standards for Drinking Water and Philippine Code on Sanitation)
To provide information how water quality testing and analyses done to determine its potability.
Day 1
The Opening Program was started with a warm welcome from Hon. Michael Mendoza, the
Barangay Captain of Salog, Goa, Camarines Sur, to the CET extensionists. Also, the College Dean (CET)
spoke to explain the purpose of the activity. There were 120 4Ps members participated the said activity.
A brief overview of the meaning of Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) and some
WaSH related issues were discussed and presented to participants. The purpose of this activity was to
measure participants’ understanding of the terminology and the seriousness of any given issue’s impact
on environment, people’s health, economics and social issues. In order to make certain participants fully
understood the meaning of WaSH, participants were guided to share their WaSH experiences and
participants were asked to identify what issues were depicted, whether they were water supply issues,
sanitation or hygiene issues. They then had to come up with the impact those issues identified had on
the environment and the people’s health.
After letting the participants reflect on the importance of WaSH, the Resource Speaker discussed
how PSU particularly the SE department could be of help to the community for WaSH promotion. She
highlighted the Water Resource and Water Quality Laboratory that offers water quality sampling, testing
and analyses. The state-of-the-art facilities of the laboratory were shown in powerpoint presentation.
There was an improvement on the WaSH awareness of the people that change their perceptions
towards environmental sanitation for public health safety and protection. They have understood the
importance of WaSH on environment, people’s health, economics and social issues.

Lesson Learned
The people of Barangay Salog, Goa, Camarines Sur, appreciated the efforts of the CET
extensionists. They felt that with PSU they find partners in safeguarding their environment and public
health. They learned about the things that PSU has to offer in helping them promote WaSH in their
community particularly in Water Quality Testing and Analyses to monitor the quality their drinking water
sources.
