(2) Charlemagne
He was a Frankish king who defended Christianity and expanded its borders. In the
epic, he is a warrior who continues to battle against paganism. He is a combination of
incredible majesty and touching vulnerability. He is a man of tireless faith and loyalty
who doesn’t afraid of war and possible failure.
(3) Ganelon
Roland's stepfather, and traitor. Ganelon has a deep umbrage of Roland that is never
completely explained in the epic. Jealousy plays a factor, as we see that Charlemagne
making Roland as a leader of the troop while considering Ganelon to be a normal
soldier of his troop. He conspires with the Saracens to kill Roland and the whole troop.
At the end of the epic, he was put to trial and executed in a very painful death along with
thirty of his relatives.
(4) Marsilla
He held the Spain’s last city standing, Saragossa. He was afraid to be killed by
Charlemagne so he promised to give treasure to him and convert to Christianity if the
Franks will go back to France. He is not a strong man, and his defeats lead him into
despair.
(5) Baligant
Marsilla's loyal lord. Baligant is the incredibly powerful emir (Commander of Islamic
Countries) of Babylon. He came to help his vassal Marsilla because of Charlemagne’s
threat of avenge. He is slain by Charlemagne in the battlefield of Roncesvals and his
pagans armies were fled and scattered.
(6) Thierry
At Ganelon's trial, he alone insists on Ganelon's guilt and betrayal. Though physically
unimposing and weaker than Pinabel, he agrees to battle him to settle the issue. By
divine intervention, he won against Pinabel in the battle.
(7) Pinabel
He is Ganelon's friend. Large and powerful, he challenged Thiery to fight him in the
combat to settle the issue of Ganelon's guilt. He was defeated by Thierry.
(8) Oliver
He is Roland's best friend. Oliver is wise and prudent, less glamorous than Roland but
far more intelligent. He and Roland argue angrily about Roland's command decisions at
Roncesvals, and Oliver's advice to him about blowing the Oliphant earlier probably
would have saved the rearguard. But he dies reconciled to Roland.
(2) Responsibility
Charlemagne fought wars against Muslim because of his responsibility to spread
Christianity to other countries, not because he likes killing Muslim people. It also
showed that it is his responsibility to avenge the death of his brave friend, Roland.
Responsibility and compassion are always inline to each other. In the epic, Roland
and his troop or Roland and Charlemagne did their responsibility of spreading
Christianity and they did it with compassion.
