CARILLO BSE II – A
GED 12

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

A. DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS IN THE EPIC.

(1) Roland
He is a hero, a model of knighthood for the new era of the Crusades. He was betrayed
by his stepfather,Ganelon by promising the Saracens that Charlemagne will lose the will
to fight if Roland dies. Roland disagree to negotiate with the Saracens in the first place.
He sees the war against Islam as being a question of religious obligation. He is bold, but
not wise. When the Saracens ambush them in the road, his decision not to blow the
Oliphant early in the battle at Rencesvals leads to the deaths of Charlemagne’s men.
But later on, he blew it anyway to call for help . He blew his Oliphant very hard that
made his temple burst and he died and his soul was escorted to heaven by saints and
angels.
Charlemagne

(2) Charlemagne

He was a Frankish king who defended Christianity and expanded its borders. In the
epic, he is a warrior who continues to battle against paganism. He is a combination of
incredible majesty and touching vulnerability. He is a man of tireless faith and loyalty
who doesn’t afraid of war and possible failure.

(3) Ganelon
Roland's stepfather, and traitor. Ganelon has a deep umbrage of Roland that is never
completely explained in the epic. Jealousy plays a factor, as we see that Charlemagne
making Roland as a leader of the troop while considering Ganelon to be a normal
soldier of his troop. He conspires with the Saracens to kill Roland and the whole troop.
At the end of the epic, he was put to trial and executed in a very painful death along with
thirty of his relatives.
(4) Marsilla
He held the Spain’s last city standing, Saragossa. He was afraid to be killed by
Charlemagne so he promised to give treasure to him and convert to Christianity if the
Franks will go back to France. He is not a strong man, and his defeats lead him into
despair.
(5) Baligant
Marsilla's loyal lord. Baligant is the incredibly powerful emir (Commander of Islamic
Countries) of Babylon. He came to help his vassal Marsilla because of Charlemagne’s
threat of avenge. He is slain by Charlemagne in the battlefield of Roncesvals and his
pagans armies were fled and scattered.

(6) Thierry
At Ganelon's trial, he alone insists on Ganelon's guilt and betrayal. Though physically
unimposing and weaker than Pinabel, he agrees to battle him to settle the issue. By
divine intervention, he won against Pinabel in the battle.

(7) Pinabel
He is Ganelon's friend. Large and powerful, he challenged Thiery to fight him in the
combat to settle the issue of Ganelon's guilt. He was defeated by Thierry.

(8) Oliver
He is Roland's best friend. Oliver is wise and prudent, less glamorous than Roland but
far more intelligent. He and Roland argue angrily about Roland's command decisions at
Roncesvals, and Oliver's advice to him about blowing the Oliphant earlier probably
would have saved the rearguard. But he dies reconciled to Roland.

B. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT KING CHARLEMAGME? IS HE A WISE KING?

EXPLAIN.
Yes, he is. Because he leads the Franks and agree to Marsilla’s promise of treasures
and conversions to Christianity if they don’t fight. This shows that Charlemagne himself
is a great leader for he thought that he and his men were tired of fighting. He also a
strong ally of Christianity because through his skills in the battlefield, he made other
countries convert to Christianity as he conquer them all. He is a wholesome warrior who
fight against paganism.

C. WHAT CAUSES THE DEATH OF ROLAND?

Roland died due to blowing his Oliphant so hard that made his temples burst. He was
told by Oliver to get help earlier but he refused to do it because he was overly confident
that they will defeat the Saracens.

D. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IDEAL KNIGHT ACCORDING TO "

SONG OF ROLAND "?
Good leadership, respect and bravery are the characteristics of Roland and King
Charlemagne. They are considered as the ideal knights in the epic. It is because
Charlemagne is a great and wise king and Roland is brave and courageous leader of
the troop. Yet, they respected each other. An ideal knight posses those traits. Roland
was loyal and devoted to his King and to his duty. It showed that he was willing to do
his responsibility even though it cost his own life. It was explained when he blew his
Oliphant to call for help to protect his troops.

E. GIVE ATLEAST 2 POSSIBLE THEMES IN THE EPIC. EXPLAIN.

(1) Good vs. Evil
 Charlemagne and the Franks are good for they were doing things by the will of God
while Saracens are purely evil for they ambushed and killed the men led by Roland.
 Roland is a good leader. Ganelon, his step-father is evil. Ganelon betray his
stepson by letting the Saracens to ambush and kill him in the road. He is jealous
and envied Roland for a long time and wanted him to vanish in his life.

(2) Responsibility
Charlemagne fought wars against Muslim because of his responsibility to spread
Christianity to other countries, not because he likes killing Muslim people. It also
showed that it is his responsibility to avenge the death of his brave friend, Roland.
Responsibility and compassion are always inline to each other. In the epic, Roland
and his troop or Roland and Charlemagne did their responsibility of spreading
Christianity and they did it with compassion.
