5 Amazing Health Benefits & Uses of Athimadhuram Tea/

Mulethi Tea + Recipe

Licorice tea/ Athimadhuram tea/ Mulethi tea has wonderful health benefits. 1. For Digestion- Licorice root has

been used for centuries to treat various ailments that involves digestive tract, as it helps to protect the stomach

lining. 2. For Cough- Licorice tea is amazing home remedy for cough and since it is sweet by itself, it is easier to

make the children drink it. However this herb should not be taken over the limit. The maximum dosage is 3 to 4

gm of this root, enough for one cup of tea. 3. For Menstrual cramps- It also relieves menstrual cramps as it has
antispasmodic and anti inflammatory proprieties. 4. For Constipation- It is also a laxative and can relieve a

person, who suffers from constipation. Take this tea daily for 2 to 3 days to get good relief from constipation. 5.

For Arthritis- Licorice has anti inflammatory properties, so it may help people who are suffering from arthritis.

However there are some side effects to licorice tea. People with blood pressure and pregnant women should

avoid this herb. Please treat this licorice tea as a medicine and don't consume it regularly. Over consumption of

licorice tea might lead to edema and effect normal bowel movements. I mainly use licorice tea to treat cough.

Licorice tea is very sweet by itself, but we always add a bit of palm candy to it. To make this licorice decoction,

first pound the licorice root and break it into pieces.  Boil water with palm candy. Once the water comes to a

roaring boil and the palm candy has dissolved, add the licorice root. Let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes before

straining it. Your licorice tea made the Indian way, with palm candy is ready!

METHOD:
1. Take licorice root (the one you see in the main picture) in a mortar and pestle and pound it
coarsely.

2. This is palm candy and it is very rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
3. Boil water in pan along with palm candy.

4. Once the palm candy has dissolved and the water has come to a rolling boil, add the
pounded licorice root and let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes. The longer you boil, the sweeter the tea
will be.

5. Strain and your sweet licorice tea is ready!

NOTES:
We always use palm candy for licorice root tea recipe, but if you don't have it then just
skip it and make the tea.

If you have health problems, don't use licorice tea without your doctors approval.

Don't drink this tea continuously for more than a week.

This treatment gives good relief for throat infections and cough.

For treating menstrual cramps, have a warm cup of this tea once in the morning to get
good relief.

Always drink this tea in an empty stomach, for it to be effective.

IPlease inform me whether Adhimaduram is good for diabetic
Reply

Adhimadhuram is good for diabetics, as it controls the blood sugar, but it will not cure it. If you are take
diabetic medication, consult your doctor if you are planning to take adhimadhuram on a daily basis,
since it reduces the blood sugar levels.

hi madam..
what are all the additional substances which can be added with adhimadhuram to reduce the
migrane problems and to decrease the blood sugar levels

Ramya Venkateshwaran 15 July 2015 at 09:31

We use adhimadhuram maily for cold and cough. I would suggest you try nochi leaf steam for
migraine as my cousin found good relief with it. And for reducing blood sugar levels, try
fenugreek tea, nilavembu or giloy. They have all been proven to reduce blood sugar levels, you
can find information about them in the blog...

Hi Sasat,
You can use licorice root for brushing the teeth. If soaked in milk and ground to a paste
makes an effective dandruff hair pack. You can also chew on the piece to get good relief from
cough immediately...

Hi Diya, I would suggest not using athimathuram when you are breast feeding because there
is contradicting information whether athimadhuram increases breast milk or not. Also it
should definitely not be had in large amounts and the dosage is also important so I would
suggest not using athimadhuram on a daily basis during breast feeding...

Hi Diya, I would suggest not using athimathuram during breast feeding as there is

for breast feeding mothers is also dose dependent so I would suggest not taking it regularly

Hi Ramya Ma'm,
I bought athimadhuram and vasambu each 250 gm thinking it could be powdered easily in a mixi. But it
did not work. So I am keeping it in sun for making it crisp. Then i saw your blog. It is good to ask a
knowledgeable person about powdering it.

Instead of buying ready-made powder of above 2, I myself want to do it and store it so that it would be
very useful and less time-consuming when we want.

Shops sell vasambu powder in its original colour. Is it possible to have it done at home? that is without
burning and blackening vasambu.

Athimadhuram also very hard to grind in mixi. How to do it?

I want both for acute dandruff problem, cold, cough.

Kindly enlighten me.

Thanks..

Pound both athimadhuram and vasambu to small pieces using a mortar and pestle. Sun dry
till crisp spread on a plate, covered with a thin mesh to prevent dust settling. While they are
still crisp from sun drying, powder in a dry mixer, sieve and store...

Boil 5 gram of licorice in 1/4 cup of water till it reduces in half and give it to her for 3 to 4 days.
Since it is sweet she will have it readily. Licorice is very very good for treating all the above
said problems. If the tonsillitis is painful, you can have her suck on a small piece of the
athimadhuram root for sometime too. Try it and let me know how she feels...

Also try to use between 2 to 5 grams and never above 5gms of athimadhuram per day for her

Manathakkali keerai is also wonderful for ulcers. Stop taking coffee, tea and spicy foods for
few days and continue taking this soup regularly till you feel better, here is the link:

about it here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22308054. But since licorice has bad side

it is very effective for thyroid related problems but please consult an ayurvedic physician for

said to regulate irregular periods and help women with pcos. But using athimadhuram for long
duration's should be done with caution especially by people with high blood pressure or by
people taking certain medications regularly. I would suggest consulting an ayurvedic doctor
for the correct dosage if you are planning to take it for long periods of time (more than a

sugar in an empty stomach for 2 to 3 days. Please let me know how you feel after 3 days of

Ramya .. this is a good post. Need you advise on one of the things that my maternal uncle (who was an
Ayurvedic Physician) used to tell us in our childhood about 'athimadhuram'... Apparently, it is very good
for singing. I mean, if you are a singer and you want your throat to be very soft and smooth (especially in
high pitch), he suggested, you should eat Athimadhuran everyday. Is it a correct observation? Can you
confirm please?

Yes, athimadhuram is highly recommended for singers as it literally treats all the problems of
the throat. Even personally I only reach out to athimadhuram first for all my throat issues :).
But I would suggest using athimadhuram only for treating and not on a daily basis for long
periods of time....

I would suggest not using athimadhuram during pregnancy as it has estrogenic properties.
Though in small doses it is ok, I would still be cautious and would suggest to avoid it. You can
also read the effect athimadhuram has on pregnant women here:

Athimadhuram is a laxative but I would suggest not using it for more than a week
continuously. I also would kindly suggest other natural herbs like kadukai which can be taken
for longer duration's safely and is very effective for constipation....
