2. Tell me about yourself. What is your family and your village/town


like? What are your hobbies and interests?
 My name is Surya Prasad Gautam. I am working at a Lidhunga Basic School as
a headteacher. I have completed thirty years of teaching at this school and this
is the thirty-one where I am still teaching. The majority of people residing
under the service area of the school are Tamang and Rai. Likewise, the main
occupation of the people is agriculture. The majority of parents are illiterate. I
have been teaching children of Rai and Tamang people since the school was
established. The children of this area are not being able to do well in education
due to lower economic and illiterate condition of their parents. In this school,
there are seventy-four children and five staffs including three teachers from
government quota, one ECD and an office assistant. My ambition is to be an
adept administrator through effective management of school, ensuring quality
education and enhancing learning achievement; thereby, making the school as
an excellent and model of the entire RM.

3. What was your life like before participating in the project?


 Before participating in the project, there was a high practice of employing
explanation method in the learning process. The teaching staffs were not
informed about child-friendly and practical-based teaching; I also used to
follow the lecture method and made the students recite the lessons. As a result,
there was not any desired changes in students' behaviour and learning.

4. How have you been involved in the project? For how long? What
have you learned?
 I have been excitingly participating in REED Nepal's programmes. I have not
missed any teacher training or other educational programs conducted by REED
at Sotang yet. This is because REED Nepal provides us opportunities for
knowing and learning new things for developing our educational standards.
After participating in REED Nepal's project, I have gained the opportunity for
learning the following things:
1. Conduct child-friendly classes,
2. Conduct classes constructing and using daily lesson plans and
educational materials,
3. Teach students by identifying their ability,
4. Conduct classes by managing the classroom,
5. Divide work and mobilize resources considering inclusiveness and
equity,
6. Make Participate parents in each educational activity.

5 How has your life changed since you became involved in the project?
Can you share a story that you think demonstrates this change?
 After participating in REED Nepal's project, I have observed the following
changes in my professional life:
1. Being active on implementation process developing enthusiasm,
activeness and encouragement towards teaching and understanding of
additional responsibility,
2. Conduct teaching learning through pre-planning and educational
materials,
3. Conduct teaching learning through various methodologies,
4. Succeed in enhancing students' learning achievement for being facilitated
to improve instructional standards,
5. Conducted child-friendly learning activities through overall management
of school's physical and educational entities,
6. Developing school as a model,
7. Received an award from the RM for being an excellent HT amongst the
basic school HTs within the RM.

6. How does it make you feel to be involved in this project?


 After involving in REED Nepal's programmes, I have found teaching as an
indispensable and significant profession and a tool for eliminating malpractice
and false beliefs; therefore, it is the duty of teachers to open the eyes of people
and teach children easily through new and advancing strategies being updated,
exemplary and responsible personnel. Nowadays, I am enjoying inside the
classroom by implementing the things learnt from REED; for this, I would
always be thankful and indebted to REED.

7. What are your hopes for the future – both for your community and for
yourself?
 My major aims for the future are to encourage the parents and stakeholders to
modernize their crops and vegetable farming, improving educational standards
of studying students, thereby, enhancing their learning outcome up to 85% in
each subjects, be an adept administrator, make our school green and
environment-friendly and make the school an excellent and model in the entire
RM.

8. Do you have anything you would like to say to our Australian


supporters?
 I want to extend sincere thanks to Australian Himalayan Foundation for
developing the learning standards managing schools and helping children in our
rural and remote place from my personal as well as parents, teachers and
students' side. Also, I wish the best to the foundation expecting to continue
similar practices in future too.

9 Do you have any other comments you would like to share?


 While the present education system is entering the technology-friendly era, we
are realizing the scarcity of internet, computer and the manpower to facilitate
them in classrooms. Therefore, I request to provide the aforementioned support
in order to make our students learn the new things for a long-term practically
and easily.
