Subject: Range of Application: Performance Class G1

The document discusses the range of application and load acceptance capabilities for engine-driven generator sets. It provides: 1) Operating limit values for transient frequency and voltage deviations according to performance classes G1-G4 from ISO 8528-5. 2) The generator sets can accept full load within 20-30 seconds of receiving a start command, depending on the model and site conditions. 3) A table showing each model's rating, estimated time to reach full load, and ability to meet performance class G2 limits for transient voltage and frequency behavior.

SUBJECT : RANGE OF APPLICATION

The requirement for range of application is that engine in vital service shall be guaranteed by the manufacturer to be able
to accept full load within 10 seconds of receiving the starting signal described in DEP 31.29.80.30-Gen, 2.2.

In general, the following operating limit values are applied as per ISO 8528-5, Table 3 – Operating limit values.
(Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets)

Operating limit values

Parameter Unit (Performance class)
G1 G2 G3 G4
Transient frequency deviation from
% < -15 < -10 < -7 AMC
rated frequency / sudden power increase
Frequency recovery time s < 10 <5 <3 AMC
Transient voltage deviation / sudden
% < -25 < -20 < -15 AMC
power increase
Voltage recovery time s < 10 <6 <4 AMC
Performance class (ISO 8528-1)
- Performance class G1
This is required for application where the connected loads are such that only basic parameters of voltage and
frequency need to be specified. (i.e, General-purpose applications (lighting and other simple electrical loads)
- Performance class G2
This is required for application where the demands on voltage characteristics are very much the same as for the
commercial power system. When load changes occur, there may be temporary but acceptable deviations of
voltage and frequency. (i.e, Lighting systems ; pumps, fans and hoists)
- Performance class G3
This is required for application where the connected equipment may make severe demands on frequency,
voltage and waveform characteristics. (i.e, Telecommunications and thyristor-controlled loads, It should be
especially recognized that both rectifier and thyristor-controlled loads may need special consideration with
respect to their effect on generator-voltage waveform)
- Performance class G4
This is required for application where the demands made on the frequency, voltage and waveform
characteristics are exceptionally severe. (i.e, Dat-processing equipment or computer systems.)
AMC : by agreement between manufacturer and customer.
For the offered generating sets with turbo-charged engines, above data apply with use of the maximum possible power
increase according to following figure as per ISO 8528-5, Figure 6.

In additions, please consider “The maximum time allowed for the emergency generator set to accept the nominal load
after initiation of a start command from cold shall be 25 s described in DEP 33.65.11.32 Gen, 8.2”.

Therefore, offered generating sets are able to accept full load within 20~30 seconds of receiving the starting signal as
