Consecrating Canada To The Blessed Virgin Mary May 1 2020
As baptized persons, young and old, we are called to follow Christ through a life of holiness and service, to
witness and evangelize, spreading the Kingdom of God in our midst. When we strive to follow Christ, despite our
personal and communal weaknesses and failings, we embody more fully our vocation as “a chosen people, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people” (1 Peter 2:9). Informed and motivated thus by our God-given identity, as
Christians we look daily to the teachings of Christ and his Church to shape how we think, decide, and act. It is not easy
to respond to life’s challenges and trials in a manner which is coherent and deeply faithful to Christ. With the unfailing
help of the Holy Spirit, however, we can turn to the Father for divine assistance, not only at the crossroads of our life,
but at every moment.
The first and foremost way of understanding what consecration means comes from the viewpoint of God
himself, for it is he who consecrates us before all else. Through Baptism, God makes us his adoptive children and
confers on us his very own holiness of life and love. With God’s sanctifying and healing grace, we are made partakers
of his Trinitarian life, enabling us to believe in him, to hope in him, and to love him through the theological virtues; we
live and act under the promptings and with the gifts of the Holy Spirit; we grow in goodness through the moral
virtues.
A second, complementary way of understanding consecration is from the viewpoint of our human and
Christian experience. Living in holiness and truth, we share in God’s life and love. To consecrate ourselves to him
personally, then, is to make a faith-filled decision in which our response to God’s love for us is uniquely our own. A
personal act of consecration is a means of further appropriating our Christian calling and continuing to abide in God’s
grace. It is the renewal of our first consecration at Baptism in the particular form of a personal pledge, made willingly
in faith, to live in more profound communion with Our Lord, committing ourselves to him and his Kingdom with
greater fervour. It is an entrustment of our entire being to God, including all that we are and do, that we may belong
to him more fully and to open ourselves even more to his grace in our lives. Christ Jesus is the best and prime example
of what it means to consecrate oneself to God and to his will.

FIRST READING
Acts 9.1-20
The law regarding the Passover meal.
Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord,
went to the high priest
and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus,
so that if he found any who belonged to the Way,
men or women,
he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus,
suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.
He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,
“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
He asked, “Who are you, Lord?”
The reply came,
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”
The men who were travelling with him stood speechless
because they heard the voice but saw no one.
Saul got up from the ground,
and though his eyes were open,
he could see nothing;
so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.
For three days he was without sight,
and neither ate nor drank.
Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias.
The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.”
He answered, “Here I am, Lord.”
The Lord said to him,
“Get up and go to the street called Straight,
and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul.
At this moment he is praying,
and he has seen in a vision
a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him
so that he might regain his sight.”
But Ananias answered,
“Lord, I have heard from many about this man,
how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem;
and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.”
But the Lord said to him,
“Go, for he is an instrument
whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings
and before the people of Israel;
I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
So Ananias went and entered the house.
He laid his hands on Saul and said,
“Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus,
who appeared to you on your way here,
has sent me so that you may regain your sight
and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes,
and his sight was restored.
Then he got up and was baptized,
and after taking some food,
he regained his strength.
For several days Saul was with the disciples in Damascus,
and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying,
“Jesus is the Son of God.”

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
RITE OF PEACE
COMMUNION
Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
After these words the Cardinal will hold the Consecrated Host above the Consecrated Wine, and at
home, we will pray the Spiritual Communion Prayer by Saint Alphonsus Liguori.
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at
least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and
unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen
COMMUNION ANTIPHON
Mary treasured all these words,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Having been baptized and answering the call of our faith, before the Father of all mercies in the name of Christ
and in the Holy Spirit, we place ourselves, our loved ones, and our country under the protective mantle of Our Lady,
the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus our Saviour, the Mother of God, the Mother of the Church, and our
spiritual Mother. As a pledge in faith, we entrust ourselves to the very woman who, through her free and pure consent
at the Annunciation, singularly collaborated in the plan that God should become Incarnate and present in our world
as one like us in all things but sin.11 The consecration of Canada to Our Lady will enrich our faith, allow a more
abundant outpouring of God’s spiritual and temporal gifts on us, and enable us even more to fulfill our calling and
mission. Ultimately, consecration to Mary, which springs from a more fervent, more committed, and more sustained
life of prayer and devotion in which the Blessed Mother plays a unique and loving role, points and leads to a renewed
spirit and understanding of family, Church, and the need for societal engagement.

INTRODUCTION
Brothers and Sisters, in this time of pandemic marked by desolation and with worry about the
future, let us entrust our country to the care and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may
benefit from her powerful intercession as we join our prayers and efforts with her maternal
mediation in Christ.
By imploring the incomparable help of Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, we invoke her
solicitude upon our country and ask that she intercede with her Son Jesus to hear the prayers of her
children who seek protection from the ravages of the coronavirus, healing for those who are ill,
wisdom and courage for those who assist the sick and distressed, and eternal rest for those who have
died.
During this month of May, which the Church particularly dedicates to the Mother of Christ, we are
one in consecrating, ourselves and our loved ones to Mary most Holy, the humble Handmaid of the
Lord and his most perfect Disciple. We lift up in prayer and in recognition all those many women
and men, clergy, religious and laity, who tirelessly commit themselves to the care of others. The
innumerable acts of deep human kindness as well as authentic Christian charity which we witness
across the globe are a source of great consolation for all. We are reminded evermore of the need to
believe and hope against all hope, and we are called to reach out to the needy, the lonely and the
dying, and so welcome the graces of divine consolation.
OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray.
At the Annunciation,
fear gave way to trust as you embraced the mysterious and loving plan of God, who
through his providence, care and concern brought about newness of life in you and
through you.
Intercede, we pray, on our behalf as your children, Virgin most faithful.
Grant us faith, hope, and perseverance, as we strive to serve and bear witness to all
persons, responding to the needs of those affected by this virus.
Come quickly to our aid at this time, Mother of Mercy, and deliver us from the
dangers that surround us in our hour of need; watch over especially the elderly, the
weak and the infirm, our children and the unity of our families, and all those who give
of themselves selflessly in pastoral care to those in need until in your arms and in your
gentle embrace we all find safety and solace.
℟.Amen.
PONTIFICAL BLESSING
The Lord be with you.
℟.And with your spirit.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.
℟.Now and for ever.
Our help is in the name of the Lord.
℟.Who made heaven and earth.
May almighty God bless you,
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
℟.Amen.
REGINA CAELI
Oremus.
℟. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the
wickedness and snares
of the Devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
