Chess or Checkers Comparison Contrast Essay
Chess or Checkers Comparison Contrast Essay
By Boris Marte
Board games have always been very popular among adults and children. Two of the most
popular board games are checkers and chess, which are similar in some aspects. Although both
chess and checkers require concentration and tactical skills, chess requires more intelligence,
memory and strategy skills.
The board is exactly the same for both games; even though some people use different colors,
only two colors can be used, alternating squares. The difference starts when you compare both
the pieces appearances and behavior. In checkers, all the pieces have exactly the same behavior
and look the same, and the only way to move differently is when you get one of your pieces to
your opponent’s side, where the piece is “crowned” and becomes a king. That piece can now
move and kill backwards, but only that. In the other hand, each type of piece in chess has its
own set of characteristics and in order to play chess correctly, you need to learn how to move
each of them and all the possible ways you can use these characteristics to make different
strategies, let alone identifying them, as they are all different.
The strategies in chess can be unlimited, as they all depend on the player style and the
development of the match. To make it even more complicated, there are 400 different possible
moves after each player makes one move. There are 72,084 possible moves after two moves.
There are 9+ million possibilities after three moves. There are 288+ billion different possible
moves after only four moves. For checkers, there’s an unbeatable checkers computer, which
means that the number of possibilities is reduced in comparison with chess, in which there is no
such thing as an unbeatable computer yet.
In checkers, the rules are very simple, all both players’ pieces move in only one color diagonally
and forward, and they kill by jumping to a free space past the target piece. You can only move
backwards with the crowned pieces. If you kill all the pieces, you win. It’s a whole different
story when you speak about chess. You can win only by cornering the king in a way that the
other player has no other possible move because if the king is threatened, the player is obliged
to defend him, and there are unlimited ways to get a player to that situation. You get tactical
advantage by killing other pieces, but you can manage to win without killing any piece, by
threatening the king in the way described.
Board games are always a good activity to enjoy with friends and develop our strategy skills.
Different board games require different levels of skills. The points presented regarding the
appearance and behavior of the pieces, the variety of strategies and the rules of checkers and
chess demonstrate that if you want to challenge yourself with a game that requires more
intelligence, chess is the way to go.
