Assignment No 1-2020-FEA Intro PDF

This document provides instructions for Assignment No. 1 for the MECN4023A course. Students must select a mechanical engineering problem that can be modeled using Ansys Static Structural analysis software. The model must include a minimum of 3 parts. Students must conduct a preliminary finite element analysis covering the idealization and modeling steps, including creating CAD models, defining material properties, selecting elements, and applying boundary conditions. A report describing the analysis must be submitted by April 6, 2020. Late submissions will be penalized. Repeating students who previously passed this assignment may apply for an exemption.

Assignment No 1 – 2020 – FEA Intro

Select a real mechanical engineering problem that can be modelled using

Ansys Static Structural - Mechanical.

The geometry of the selected mechanical assembly must be composed of a

minimum of 3 separate parts (they can be more than 3).

For the selected problem conduct a preparatory Finite Element Analysis. Make
sure to cover completely the first 2 typical steps of a Finite Element stress
Analysis (see FEA notes Chapter 2):

1. Idealization:

 problem classification
 physical model (with sketches)
 preliminary analysis

2. Modelling (Pre-processing):

 Geometry - (1) creation of the complete manufacturing CAD and (2) its
FE simplified CAD (N.B. CAD downloaded from Internet or from Ansys
Workshops are NOT acceptable)
 material properties
 element selection
 mesh strategy
 boundary conditions

Make sure to describe properly all the assumptions made and to account for all
the capabilities and limitations of the defined FE model.
N.B. in the Ansys Mechanical Help, Release 19.3: Ansys Mechanical
APDL/Element Reference you will find a list of all the possible Finite
Elements that can be defined in an Ansys simulation with complete
formulation.

Students are strongly advised to consult with Prof. C. Polese during the
scheduled consultation slots regarding the selection of their static structural
engineering problem.

Assignment No 1 – Instructions
Write an individual report in which you describe in details the preliminary FEA
of your selected static structural engineering problem.

 On‐line submission on MECN4023A Sakai Website:

https://wits-e.wits.ac.za/portal/site/MECN4023-2020-SM1

 Electronic format (*.pdf).

 Name the file according to your student number and surname (ex:
181215_Skywalker.pdf).
 The body of the report (introduction to conclusions) must not exceed 20
pages. Failure to do so will attract a penalty.

IMPORTANT: Files not meeting these requirements will not be assessed!

 Submission deadline: Monday, 6th of April 2020 at 08h00 a.m.

Late assignments' submissions will be penalized as follows: 10% for the first 24
hrs or part thereof, 5% for every subsequent 24 hrs or part thereof (weekends
and public holidays included).

Repeating students, who have already submitted the Assignment No 1 AND the
Assignment No 2 in 2019 AND have obtained a passing mark for both of them,
may be exempted from this submission. However, they are requested to
complete the attached “Application for Granting Credit For An Assignment”
form and submit it to [email protected] expressing their decision on
this regard.
