Chapter I
The Problem
Background of the study
Leadership plays an important role in every aspect of a Students life. Students go though
many stages in life for career development where they need leadership skills. In the modern
world, students are facing many career challenges, employment problems, and conflicted
between idealism and beneficial. That’s why they need leadership skills to accept challenges,
solve problems and analyze career direction. (http://www.klientssolutech.com/importance-of-
leadership-skills-fpr-students/)
It’s important for student to experience leadership opportunities during their schooling to
learn the art of building relationships within teams, defining identities and achieving tasks
effectively. It also provides an opportunity to learn to identify and display effective
communication and interpersonal skills. (htttps://www.btac.nsw.edu.au./2017/02/student-
leadership-important-education/)
Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common
goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to
meet the company’s needs. (https:www.thebalancesmb.com/leadership-definition-2948275)
We found that leadership experience increased student’s willingness to “lead by example”
and contribute first; second-ranked candidates were approximately half of them more likely
to contribute first when assigned to leadership position. Finally, we examined the effects of
leadership on social networks and popularity. (https:/hbr.org/2017/02/research-how-
leadership-experience-affects-students)
Statement of the problem

performances?
Significance of the study
The present study will be significance in understanding the academic performances of
student leaders of the Bersamin Agro-Industrial High School.
Specifically, it will be beneficial to the following fields or groups;
To the Students- This will help them to identify and understand that being school leader
has affects to their education, specifically in their academic performances. It is nice to know
that being leaders has effects in their life and education.
To the School Administrations- Findings of this study influence educational institutions
to review their approaches, procedures and processes involved in student leadership
particularly along the areas of management it will provide reliable facts that shall serve as
practical standards in realizing to the fullest extent the mentioned areas of student governing
bodies.
This will help them to guide their students how leading works and sustaining their academic
performances.
To the Future Researcher- Findings of this study will provide additional information
imperative in pursuing deeper studies related with the student leadership. This study is
expected to become a guide and a resourceful material as for other researchers who will be
conducting the same for related studies.
Scope and Limitations of Study
The respondents of this study are the school student leaders of Bersamin Agro-industrial
High School. The main purpose of this study is to provide information regarding Students
leadership, and how it affects their academic performances.
The researcher limited into 13 respondents which are the Supreme Student Government
(SSG) of Bersamin Agro-Industrial High School. Each of them will interview by the
researchers. The respondents will be interviewed thoroughly to get perceptions.

REVIEW OF RELATED LETERATURE
Related Literature
Foreign
Waters, J and Manzano, Robert (2014) found thus: Of the 27 reports examined in the meta-
analysis, 14 (excluding statistical outliers) contained information about the relationship
between overall district-level leadership and average student academic achievement in the
district. These 14 reports included data from 1,210 districts. The computed correlation
between district leadership and student achievement was .24 (95 percent confidence
interval: .19 to .30). The fact that the 95 percent confidence interval does not include 0
indicates that this correlation is significant at the .05 level. Correlations such as these can be
interpreted in a variety of ways (for a review see Cohen et al. 2003). One of the most
common interpretations is to examine the expected change in the dependent variable
associated with a one standard deviation gain in the independent variable (Magnusson 1966).
In this case, the independent variable is district-level leadership and the dependent variable is
average student achievement in the district. One way to interpret the .24 correlation is to
consider an average superintendent who is at the 50th percentile in terms of his or her
leadership abilities and leading a district where average student achievement is also at the
50th percentile. Now, assume that the superintendent improves his or her leadership abilities
by one standard deviation (in this case, rising to the 84th percentile of all district leaders).
Given the correlation between district leadership and student achievement of .24, we would
predict that average student achievement in the district would increase by 9.5 percentile
points. In other words, average student achievement in the district would rise to the 59.5th
percentile as shown in figure 1. Curve A in figure 1 depicts a district at the 50th percentile in
terms of average student achievement and average district-level leadership. Curve B depicts
the expected average academic achievement of students in the same district after the district
leadership has increased in quality by one standard deviation. Again, average student
academic achievement increased from the 50th percentile to the 59.5th percentile—a gain of
almost 10 percentile points. This finding stands in sharp contrast to the notion that district
administration is a part of what former Secretary of Education William Bennett (Bennett,
Finn, and Cribb 1999) characterized as an amorphous “blob” that soaks up valuable resources
without adding value to a district’s instructional program. To the contrary, these findings
suggest that when district leaders are carrying out their leadership responsibilities effectively,
student achievement across the district is positively affected.
Local
According to Gutek (2009), colleges and universities usually provide learning centres
to assist students who are experiencing difficulties in their classes. These facilities offer
4
tutoring and remedial education in areas where the student is experiencing difficulty.
Counselling services are also available for students dealing with personal difficulties,
including substance abuse and eating disorders. Career placement centres provide help in
making career decisions and finding jobs after completing college. The Student Government
deals with the organization and regulation of student activities, academic curricula, and
discipline at schools, colleges, and universities by student bodies or councils. A group of
officers, elected by students and consisting of students and some faculty members, acts as a
channel of communication between the administrators of the institution, such as the school
principal or the president and board of governors of a college, and the students. It also takes
part in the regulation of educational, disciplinary, and extracurricular activities and listens to
the grievances of students (Microsoft Encarta, 2009) However, Garlejo (2006) said that every
college or university has a student Council as the supreme student organization of the school.
Its main role is to ensure that the rights and welfare of all students are always upheld and
promoted. The Student Council is tasked to develop school spirit and promote the general
welfare of the students; to advise the university/college President on student matters, affairs
and activities of distinctly intercollegiate concern; to adopt its own by-laws for its internal
and general government; to coordinate student activities; and to exercise such powers and
perform such act of duties as the school authorities may from time to time delegate to it. On
the other hand, Gacutan (2006) said that leaders of different student organizations in every
campus played very important roles to perform for school enhancement. They are considered
as a powerful vigor of human resources that the school taps for instruction as well as in
school organization. This is very true to students for they are considered as the most
important element of the educational community. Though young as they are, students are
aware of the many problems that confront their school life and their future. Hence, they
should have the initiatives to offer solutions to such problems thereby giving them chances to
execute their plans and mobilize their works within their capabilities because of their desire
to facilitate students’ development and help improve the prestige of the school they belong.
Cooper et al., (1994) as cited by Foubert and Grainge (2006) said that involvement in clubs
and organizations has been shown to correlate positively with several areas of psychosocial
development. Specifically, college juniors who are members of student organizations score
higher than nonmembers on such factors as educational involvement, career planning,
lifestyle planning, cultural participation, and academic autonomy. Meanwhile, De Jesús, et.al
(2015) holds that the challenging terrain of modern urban life requires these youth to
navigate the political, economic, and legal demands confronted by their families; to
understand the rules for success in public schools; and to steer clear of violence in their
communities. Larger issues such as climate change and environmental justice understandably
cannot be priorities for youth who are preoccupied with day-to-day survival. However,
Martin, (2000) as cited by Ebede (2015) mentioned that many college and university students
participate in student organizations not only for entertainment. Student also wants to develop
skills, knowledge and competencies that are relevant to their career. Researchers suggested
that participation in activities that supplement classroom learning is certainly associated to
the development of skills, knowledge and advanced interpersonal connections.

about the topic or problem by the respondents.
Sampling technique
The researchers used purposive sampling technique under the non-probability sampling in
whish samples are selected based on the objective of the study.
Respondents of the study
The respondents of the study are the SSG of Bersamin Agro-Industrial High School. This
study has (13) respondents.
Data Gathering procedure
The Researchers asked permission to conduct a study by using Interview inside the
campus of bersamin Agro-Industrial High School. The researchers will conduct it in
Structured Interview and the respondents will be given enough time to answer the questions.
Likewise, the researchers personally ask the respondents to answer the questions for us to
analyze their academic performances. After which the researchers collected the questionnaire
and arranged the research for analysis and interpretation.
