Topic: Recommendations That Could Lead To Permanent Answers To The University'S Lan/Lan (Enterprise) Infrastructure Problems

The document provides recommendations to address network infrastructure problems between the University of Bamenda (UBa) and an enterprise. It proposes designing a new network topology connecting UBa, the enterprise, and internet service providers using devices like Cisco switches, routers, access points, CAT7 cable, and RJ45 connectors. This would help solve issues like data duplication, limited storage, unreliable connectivity, and poor performance by enabling centralized data management, wireless access, and regular equipment updates. Cloud storage solutions could also be leveraged through the internet connections to provide unlimited storage.

Introduction

Most of the network problems in an enterprise are linked to the poor design of its network and
the infrastructures that go with it. In the case of enterprise/UBa, the problems related to this
poor design are as follows:

➢ Duplication Of Information/Data
Data duplication is a process of creation of an exact copy of data on UBa and Entreprise,
giving that, there is not serious information system / database with referenced integrity
to manage data on both.
➢ Problem Of Storage Capacity :
There is not enough space to store data because capacity of each computer is limited
and there is not a server to store data
➢ Standalone Systems Is Another Problem
There is not a serious network and no communication between UBa and Entreprise
➢ The Network Is Unreliable
Bad Hardware and media are responsible to unreliable networking
➢ Network Unavailable
Bad Hardware and media are also responsible to unavailable networking
➢ Poor Performance Of Network
Sometimes networks are never able to reach their full potential due to poor network design
which causes poor performance.
Numerous small businesses purchase equipment and then continue to use it beyond its
“shelf-life.” If equipment is not updated regularly, it will struggle to keep up with ever
increasing workloads

To provide solution to these problems, it is necessary to well design network with new
generation devices.
Here is the topology
Topology of network between UBa and Enterprise
Description of equipment’s use on topology above
1) ISP: Internet Service Providers in Cameroon

We can use it to connect UBa/Enterprise and through INTERNET we can use Unlimited Cloud
Storage Solutions and hosting services to application that can manage data.

Major ISP in Cameroon

• CAMTEL
• MTN
• ORANGE
• RINGO
• YOOMEE

Some Unlimited Cloud Storage Solutions

➢ SpiderOak - Best for Big Companies

➢ BackBlaze B2 - Best in Speed
➢ OpenDrive - Best for Reliable Uptime
➢ Box - Best for Multiple Users
➢ Dropbox Business - Best Overall

2) CiscoCatalyst 2960 48 Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch

We could use it to configure:

❖ VLAN
❖ DHCP,…
The Cisco Catalyst 2960 can support 48 PoE ports with total PoE power output capacity
at 370W. Taking advantage of Cisco Catalyst Intelligent Power Management, the Cisco
Catalyst 2960-48PST-L configuration can deliver the necessary power to support 24 ports at
15.4W, 48 ports at 7.7W, or any combination in between. Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series with PoE
models support Cisco prestandard PoE and are IEEE 802.3af-compliant.

PoE eliminates the need for wall power to each PoE-enabled device and eliminates the
cost for additional electrical cable and circuits that would otherwise be necessary in IP phone
and WLAN deployments. PoE switches also eliminate the need for power injectors and PoE
midspans for powering IP devices. This table provides a brief description of the new switch.

Cisco Catalyst Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switches

Product Name Description

(Part Number)

Cisco Catalyst • 48 Ethernet 10/100 ports with 2 10/100/1000TX

2960-48PST-L and 2 Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) uplinks

Switch (WS- • 1 RU fixed-configuration

C2960-48PST-L) • LAN Base image installed

The Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series with PoE offers the following benefits:

• Supports 15.4W up to 24 ports, allowing transparent connectivity to PoE devices, including

Cisco IP phones, Cisco Aironetwireless LAN access points, as well as any IEEE 802.3af-
compliant end device.
• Cisco EnergyWise to measure, report and reduce energy usage across the entire organization.
• Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) version 2 allows the switch to negotiate a more granular
power setting when connecting to a Cisco powered device, such as IP phones or access points,
than what is provided by IEEE classification.
• PoE MIB provides proactive visibility into power usage and allows you to set different power-
level thresholds.
• Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP and LLDP-MED) adds support for IEEE 802.1AB
LLDP for interoperability in multivendor networks.
• Network configuration, Cisco IOS Software updates, and troubleshooting are easy using the
embedded device manager and Cisco Network Assistant.
• These switches utilize capabilities rich in Cisco IOS Software, including comprehensive Layer
2 LAN features, intelligent quality of service (QoS), extensive security protection, and network
management features.
• Limited lifetime hardware warranty.
• Software updates available at no additional cost.

3) Cisco 4331 Integrated Services Router (ISR)

We could use it to configure:

❖ VPN
❖ DHCP
❖ Firewall,…
Cisco 4331 Integrated Services Router delivers 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps aggregate
throughput and offers one Enhanced service-module (SM-X) slot, which supports for
both single- and double-wide service modules provides flexibility in deployment
options.

4) Cisco 1530 Outdoor Access point

This help us to connect wireless devices.

Cisco Aironet 1530 Series Outdoor Access Points, sleek, innovative, flexible access
points, can withstand the most rugged outdoor conditions. The 1530 Series provides two
platform including Cisco Aironet 1532I (internal antennas) and 1532E (external
antennas) Outdoor Access Points. The Cisco Aironet 1530 Series offers high-
performance device access through improved radio sensitivity and range with
802.11a/b/g/n multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, with two or three
spatial streams and up to 300Mbps data rates.

5) Cable SFTP CAT7

We use it to connect wired devices.

Category 7 cable, more commonly known as a Cat7 or Cat-7 cable, is a type of high-
end data transfer patch cable used in delivering the core infrastructure of wired Gigabit
Ethernet setups. It’s a shielded twisted pair cable, used principally in achieving high-
speed Ethernet connections at data transfer rates of 1 Gbps or higher between directly
linked servers, switches and computer networks.

6) RJ45 Connector

We use it to crimp cable
