What's the difference between the Present Simple / Present Continuous and how to use
them.
 We use the Present Simple Tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or
routines – things that don’t change.
 We use the Present Continuous to talk about actions which are happening at the
present moment, but will soon finish.

Compare these two statements:

• (present simple) I play tennis.
• (present continuous) I am playing tennis.

Explanation:
 (present simple) ‘I play tennis’ tells us that playing tennis is something the speaker
always does. It is part of a routine or habit. We can call this a permanent situation.
 (present continuous/ progressive) ‘I am playing tennis’ tells us that the speaker is
playing tennis right now. Soon the game will be over. We call this a temporary
situation.

Present Simple Tense Present Continuous Tense

Things which are always true: Things which are happening at the
• Water boils at 100 degrees. moment of speaking:
• The water is boiling now, so you
can put in the pasta.
Permanent situations (or nearly Temporary situations:
permanent; true for a few years at least): • Julie is living in Paris for a few
• Julie lives in London. months (usually she lives in
London).
Situations which are slowly changing:
• I'm getting better and better at
speaking English.
Habits or things we do regularly: Temporary or new habits:
• I drink coffee every morning. • I'm drinking too much coffee
these days because I'm so busy at
work.

A. Most verbs, make the Present Simple in the same way.

The positive is really easy. It's just the verb with an extra 's' if the subject is 'he', 'she', or
'it'.
Rule: S + V1 (3rd singular + s/es)

Teacher, Liliana Gheorghe 1

Let's take some verbs as examples:
Positive (of 'play') Positive (of 'drink') Positive (of 'listen')

I play I drink I listen

you play you drink you listen
he plays he drinks he listens
she plays she drinks she listens
it plays it drinks it listens
we play we drink we listen
you play you drink you listen
they play they drink they listen
• Don't forget the 's'!

 Some verbs have present simple spelling changes with 'he', 'she' or 'it':
 Verbs that end in 'y': Verbs that end in 'y' often change 'y' to 'ie' before 's':
 study becomes studies
 try becomes tries
 marry becomes marries
 fly becomes flies
 cry becomes cries

(Be careful! 'y' doesn't change to 'ie' if the ending is 'ay', 'ey', 'oy', 'uy'. So, play becomes
plays, say becomes says, buy becomes buys, enjoy becomes enjoys, stay becomes stays)

 Verbs that end in 's', 'sh', 'ch', or 'x': Verbs that end in 's', 'sh', 'ch' or 'x' often
add 'e' before 's':
 pass becomes passes
 wash becomes washes
 teach becomes teaches

 There are also few verbs which are irregular in the present simple:
 'have' becomes 'has'
 'do' becomes 'does'
 'go' becomes 'goes'
 To make the negative form, you need to use 'do not' (don't) or ' does not'
(doesn't).

• Don't add the 's'! Negative (of 'play') Short form

I do not play I don't play
you do not play you don't play
Rule: S + Do/does + V1 he does not play he doesn't play
she does not play she doesn't play
it does not play it doesn't play
we do not play we don't play
you do not play you don't play
they do not play they don't play

Teacher, Liliana Gheorghe 2

 We use 'do' or 'does' before the subject to make the 'yes / no' question:

Rule: Do/does + S + V1

Yes / No questions Wh- questions

do I play ? What do I play ?
do you play ? Where do you play ?
does he play ? How does he play ?
does she play ? Who she play ?
does it play ? Why does it play ?
do we play ? When do we play ?
do you play ? What do you play ?
do they play ? Where do they play ?
• Don't add the 's'!

Frequency Adverbs we use with the Present Simple

With the present simple we use these frequency adverbs:
(Notice that the adverb comes before the main verb in the sentence.)
 Always: ‘I always read before I go to bed.’
 Often: ‘Her sister often comes shopping with us.’
 Usually:‘Michael usually visits his family.’
 Sometimes:‘You sometimes go to the gym, don’t you?’
 Never: ‘Japanese people never wear shoes inside.’

To say how often something happens, you can use a number or 'several' or 'many',
followed by 'times'.( If the number is one, use 'once' instead of 'one time'. If the number
is two use 'twice,' instead of 'two times') Then add 'a' and a period of time:
 I go to the cinema twice a week.
 She takes these tablets three times a day.
 I change the sheets once a fortnight (fortnight = two weeks).
 I meet him several times a year.
 I visit my parents once a month.

We can also use 'every' + period of time:

 every morning
 every day
 every Tuesday
 every week
 every month

A day of the week with 's' at the end (for example 'on Tuesdays') means the same as 'every
Tuesday':
• I take a dance class on Wednesdays.
• I relax on Saturdays.

B. The Present Continuous Tense in English is really easy to make and is the same
for all verbs. We make it using the Present Simple Of 'Be' + verb-ing:

Rule: S + am/is/are + V1 + ING

Positive of ‚play’ Positive of ‚sleep’ Positive of ‚watch’

I am playing I am sleeping I am watching
You are playing You are sleeping You are watching
He is playing He is sleeping He is watching
She is playing She is sleeping She is watching
It is playing It is sleeping It is watching
We are playing We are sleeping We are watching
You are playing You are sleeping You are watching
They are playing They are sleeping They are watch ing

We can make the negative by adding 'not':

Rule: S + am/is/are + not + V1 + ING

Negative Negative Short Form

I am not sleeping I'm not sleeping
you are not playing you aren't playing
he is not reading he isn't reading
she is not working she isn't working
it is not raining it isn't raining
we are not cooking we aren't cooking
they are not listening they aren't listening

Questions are also really, really easy. Just like we made the question with 'be' in the
Present Simple, here we also put 'am', 'is', or 'are' before the subject to make a 'yes / no'
question:

Yes / No Questions
Rule: am/is/are + S + V1 + ING am I eating chocolate ?
are you studying now ?
is he working ?
is she doing her homework ?
is it raining ?
are we meeting at six ?
are they coming ?
Time Expressions we use with the Present Continuous
With the present continuous we use these time expressions:
(Notice that the time expression can come at the start or at the end of the sentence.)
