What's the difference between the Present Simple / Present Continuous and how to use
them.
We use the Present Simple Tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or
routines – things that don’t change.
We use the Present Continuous to talk about actions which are happening at the
present moment, but will soon finish.
Explanation:
(present simple) ‘I play tennis’ tells us that playing tennis is something the speaker
always does. It is part of a routine or habit. We can call this a permanent situation.
(present continuous/ progressive) ‘I am playing tennis’ tells us that the speaker is
playing tennis right now. Soon the game will be over. We call this a temporary
situation.
Some verbs have present simple spelling changes with 'he', 'she' or 'it':
Verbs that end in 'y': Verbs that end in 'y' often change 'y' to 'ie' before 's':
study becomes studies
try becomes tries
marry becomes marries
fly becomes flies
cry becomes cries
(Be careful! 'y' doesn't change to 'ie' if the ending is 'ay', 'ey', 'oy', 'uy'. So, play becomes
plays, say becomes says, buy becomes buys, enjoy becomes enjoys, stay becomes stays)
Verbs that end in 's', 'sh', 'ch', or 'x': Verbs that end in 's', 'sh', 'ch' or 'x' often
add 'e' before 's':
pass becomes passes
wash becomes washes
teach becomes teaches
There are also few verbs which are irregular in the present simple:
'have' becomes 'has'
'do' becomes 'does'
'go' becomes 'goes'
To make the negative form, you need to use 'do not' (don't) or ' does not'
(doesn't).
Rule: Do/does + S + V1
To say how often something happens, you can use a number or 'several' or 'many',
followed by 'times'.( If the number is one, use 'once' instead of 'one time'. If the number
is two use 'twice,' instead of 'two times') Then add 'a' and a period of time:
I go to the cinema twice a week.
She takes these tablets three times a day.
I change the sheets once a fortnight (fortnight = two weeks).
I meet him several times a year.
I visit my parents once a month.
A day of the week with 's' at the end (for example 'on Tuesdays') means the same as 'every
Tuesday':
• I take a dance class on Wednesdays.
• I relax on Saturdays.
Questions are also really, really easy. Just like we made the question with 'be' in the
Present Simple, here we also put 'am', 'is', or 'are' before the subject to make a 'yes / no'
question:
Yes / No Questions
Rule: am/is/are + S + V1 + ING am I eating chocolate ?
are you studying now ?
is he working ?
is she doing her homework ?
is it raining ?
are we meeting at six ?
are they coming ?
Time Expressions we use with the Present Continuous
With the present continuous we use these time expressions:
(Notice that the time expression can come at the start or at the end of the sentence.)
