Laboratory #2: Non-Ideal OP-AMP Characteristics: Task 1. Offset Voltages and Currents

This document describes an experiment to measure the non-ideal characteristics of an op-amp. Students will construct circuits using an LM741 op-amp to determine the op-amp's offset voltage, input bias and offset currents by measuring the output voltage under different circuit configurations. They will also apply square wave inputs to measure the op-amp's positive and negative slew rates. The goal is to better understand non-ideal characteristics like offset, bias currents and slew rate limitations compared to ideal specifications in the op-amp's datasheet.

Laboratory #2: Non-ideal OP-AMP Characteristics

1. Objective:

In this experiment, you will measure non-ideal characteristics of an op-amp.

Equipment and circuit components: Signal Generator, Power supply with variable voltage, Multimeter,
Breadboard, op-amp (LM741), Resistors (of specified values in the manual).

2. Preliminary work:

2.1. Find the data sheet of LM741. Get familiar with this op-amp and its pin diagram. Find input bias
current, offset current and slew-rate of the op-amp by inspecting its data sheet.

2.2. Considering the bias currents of the op-amp, calculate the output voltage of the inverting
amplifiers shown in the following figures.

Cir 2.a Cir 2.b

3. Lab tasks:

In the lab you will be provided LM741 op-amp.

Task 1. Offset voltages and currents

 Construct the circuit shown in Cir 2.a. Use 10k resistors for R1 and Rf but measure their exact
values before putting them in the circuit. Use ±12V supply to power the op-amp.
 Disconnect R1 and measure the output voltage. Note this voltage as Vo1.
 Connect R1 and measure the output voltage. Note this voltage as Vo2.
 From the above two measurements calculate offset voltage (VOS) and bias current (IB1) using:

VOS 
R1
Vo 2  Vo1 
R2

I B1 
Vo 2  Vo1 
Rf

 Construct Cir 2.b by adding Rg. Use 10k resistor for Rg, but measure its exact value before

1
adding it to the circuit.
 Use the previous measurements and the equation that you derived in your pre-lab calculate
IB2.
 Replace Rg by 5k resistor and measure the output voltage. (Comment on the result)
 Calculate input offset and input bias currents using (Compare these values against data
sheet):

I OS  I B1  I B 2

IB 
I B1  I B 2 
2

Task 2. Slew rate

 Construct a unity gain amplifier.
 Apply 1V square wave to the input.
 Set the frequency of the square-wave to 100 Hz. Sketch the result on your report.
 Apply 10V square wave to the input. Observe the output waveform. By measuring the slope of
the output waveform calculate positive and negative slew rates of the op-amp.
