EE406-2018 Practice Questions

This document is an end-semester examination for a course on High Voltage DC Transmission. It contains 5 questions assessing students' knowledge of key concepts relating to HVDC systems. Question 1 asks about the use of thyristors in HVDC converters, developing an equivalent circuit model, and calculating parameters for a 12-pulse converter. Question 2 derives expressions for output voltage and current in a rectifier converter and analyzes waveforms. Question 3 relates to commutation and stability control. Question 4 covers multi-terminal DC systems, current margins between stations, and different firing control schemes. Question 5 addresses harmonic filtering, filter arrangements, and calculating 11th harmonic current in a 12-pulse converter.

Program: B.Tech.
Semester: 8th
Subject Name: High Voltage DC Transmission
Subject Code: EE-406

No. of pages: 01 Full Marks: 50 Duration: 3 Hours

Figures at the right hand margin indicate marks.
All symbols carry usual meaning. Assume standard value for any missing data.
Answer all questions
1. a) Why are thyristors (SCRs) used as converter elements in HVDC valves? Explain SCRs
are connected in series and parallel arrangements for a desired voltage and current.
b) Develop the equivalent circuit of a converter working as rectifier with an overlap angle µ

and delay angle . Hence, show that the equivalent resistance of the converter is . [4+3+3=10]

Where is the angular frequency and is the effective series inductance associated
with converter per phase.
c) A ±500 kV, 2000 MW HVDC converter operates as a 12-pulse unit. Assuming full
conduction and no losses calculate (i) Transformer secondary line to line voltage (RMS)
(ii) peak to peak ripple (iii) PIV of the valves and (iv) Transformer line current.
2. a) Obtain the expressions for the output voltage and direct current of a converter working
as a rectifier with delay angle α and commutation angle .
b) Draw and analysis the voltage and current waveforms of 6-pulse bridge converter [4+3+3=10]
with α = 180°.
c) A 220 kV double circuit line rated for 250 MVA, at 0.8 p.f. is converted into a DC line.
There are 14 std. Disk insulators on the line and are rated 10 kV (rms) or 14 kV peak.
Estimate (i) The voltage rating of the DC line with same insulator (ii) Maximum DC
power transfer capability.

3. a) Show that, if the direct current is changing slowly during commutation, the following
relation is valid: − (cos − ) = ( ! + # ), where, # is the value of at
the beginning of commutation ($ = % − ) and ! is the value at the end of
commutation ($ = % − ).
[3+4+3=10]
b) How the stability of HVDC transmission line is control can perform. Explain in details
with necessary neat sketches.
c) Explain the individual and combined characteristics of a converter.

4. a) Why are multi terminal DC systems needed? Write down the comparison of series &
parallel MTDC system. What is the limitation of both the control system?
b) What do you understand by current margin between two stations in an HVDC Link?
How it is assigned to the station. Why it is advantageous to operate the inverter as [3+3+4=10]
constant voltage controller under normal condition?
c) State the different firing control schemes adopted for HVDC systems with neat sketches.
Explain the difference in operation of each method. Also state their merits and demerits.

5. a) How do you design of high pass filter? Draw the equivalent circuit of harmonics source
and active filter? suggest the various methods for minimizing harmonics
b) Briefly discuss with neat sketch the arrangement of filters and damping circuit on
HVDC converter. What are the advantages of AC and DC filters? [3+4+3=10]
c) A 12 pulse operation is obtained with star-star bank of 1:1 turns ratio and star-delta bank
of 1: √3 turns ratio. Estimate the peak value of current in the secondary side of delta
winding when current in the DC link is 1000 A and 11th harmonic current. Assume
α=0° and µ=0°.
