is growing fast and every week we see press releases and research papers on what
new areas drones are being used for. This is a vast area where drones are presently
The usage of drones in some of these sectors was originally completed using
helicopters and airplanes. However, these are expensive to hire and not always
available when they were required. Using helicopters and airplanes is also very time
consuming as they have to fly in from other locations and then do their work.
However, there are not any drones which purposely to be used for surveying and
inspection of the large building projects and maintenance works. This includes;
telecom masts, checking fences and agricultural buildings, road and highway building
Thus, in New Product Development (NPD) report, we came out with a solution to
this problem which is by developing new services which are inspection and surveying
using drones to very difficult or dangerous places such as in confined space or very
high places. The service is considered as new to the firm. Drones are terrific for getting
an overview and close ups of buildings and structures. Drones are also a safer method
Our marketing target is the industrial companies who require site surveying and
inspection on high places or confined space. This includes sectors such as construction,
mining, rail, forestry and parks. We want these targets feel they are going through an

easier way from previous system. Drones save loads of time as there is no need to build
surveying work also saves employees from having to take on the responsibility of
dangerous work.
2.0 INTRODUCTION
In today day and age, technology not only serves as entertainment but
also as mean to ensure a more productive and efficient way to perform certain
task. Technology has become one of the most significant parts of everybody’s
life. Technologies have existed in all fields which include medical, transportation
military drones to cruise at extremely high altitudes. Drones are equipped with
different state of the art technology such as infrared cameras, GPS and laser.
Drones are controlled by remote ground control systems and also referred to as
a ground cockpit.
An unmanned aerial vehicle system has two parts, the drone itself and the
control system. The nose of the unmanned aerial vehicle is where all the sensors
and navigational systems are present. The rest of the body is full of drone
The engineering materials used to build the drone are highly complex composites

designed to absorb vibration, which decrease the sound produced. These
Drones come in a wide variety of sizes, with the largest being mostly used
for military purposes such as the Predator drone. The next in size are unmanned
aircraft, which have fixed wings and require short runways. Next is quadcopter, a
multirotor helicopter that is lifted and propelled by four rotors. These are
improvements over the evolutionary of technology. The first problem arise is the
such as in confined space or very high places. In order to get an overview and
close ups of buildings and structures, most of the industry players are still using
The second problem arise is the previous method makes time consuming.
Using the helicopters or airplanes, however these are expensive to hire and not
always available when they were required. Using helicopters and airplanes is

also unbearable within time as they have to fly in from other locations and then
do their work.
2.3 METHODOLOGY
In order to analyse the problems and come out with the business solution,
the step that has being done was setting up a series of questionnaires. The aim
of this survey was to find out the problems facing by the industrial management
in the scope of the current system and indirectly identify the solutions to the
problems occurred.

analysed using basic frequency analysis that was derived from Microsoft Excel
software. The platform used for these survey questionnaires is Google Form

2.4 LIMITATION
As for the data collection process, due to the several constraints such as
limited time, the difficulty of findings the respondents for the survey sessions;
8
although this data collection process was carefully prepared, there were still
limitations and shortcomings. The process of survey was done on a small scale
involving only 24 respondents. Since the population was small, the findings
information and some of the information had not been found in order to develop
this service. The limited drone knowledge about components, sensor system and
application should also be one of the limitations occur in order to build up the
project as we only refer to the reading materials and our knowledge in this area.
There is also need for the experts who are knowledgeable in this area to develop
this system. Next, time constraints also one of the limitations in order to build up
this system as the developing process is taking a longer period. Besides, lack of
budget can be considered as the limitations too since the development process
requires much money to do so; the budget for hiring the developers that experts
in designing drone and the accessories needed and the budget on buying the

1. ANALYSE
Basic Needs
The first part of the Consumer Trend Canvas is the analyzation of the basic
needs and desires from customer that addressing this trend. Due to the problem
statement that mentioned in section 2.2, the basic needs that the costumer wants is the
long range of time and distance of the flight ability of the drone. Most of the current
product from the market got really limited time range and distance of flight as the drone
is still in the baby step of it trends. The technology that are equipped in the latest of the
drone still new and still running to grasp the despair of the enhancement of the system
Besides, as the drone is fly far away from the users, it has the tendency to lost
connection that can cause the drone to crash and has the possibility for the drone to
cause harms towards surrounding especially living mechanisms as the drone failed to
control and crash. In order to overcome this problem, the use of high equipment that
can support long range of GPS signal to make sure the connection between the user
13
Drivers of Change
There are two categories that can be divided from the parts of drivers of change
which is : the shift(long term) and the triggers (short term). The first category; shift, it is
important to have a useful platform that can be used for long-term and give extensive
changes to the current system. We are driven in order to provide and fulfill the
parameters that can be used to occupy the capability and functionality of the design for
each drone that designed for each situations with system that can provide various of
function. As the drone is the implementation of UAV drone of the military that can be
used to suit the works of each situation whether in the industries or even at home.
The recent and the short term changes or technologies is the second type of
categories that are focused. From our research and observation, drone can be
considered as flying mechanism tools that are used in military that focused in the
defense, tactical and warfare world. But it can be adapted for the use of the people that
related with capabilities and functionality of the drones. As the world revolve and the
industry already reach to the level of the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0) where the
core of the technologies is artificial intelligence where in the engineering based industry
the use of human to inspect situation already replaced with the use of drone which can
reduce the harms towards mankind. Beside in other industry they use the drone for the
photography related. Moreover in agriculture, they can use drone to distribute the seed,
fertilizer, water and much more in their field. As IR 4.0 reached all of the use of human
mechanism can be reduced which lead to the advance use of drone technologies.
13
Emerging Consumer Expectations
Based on the previous survey that has been conducted, we want to fulfil the
consumer expectations where they wants a drone that have better control system where
they can easily maneuver the drone which are more practical, equipped with high
specification such as high speed motor with enhanced chasis body and better quality of
signal and camera to record the video and pictures. Besides they also demanded the
drone to be able to reach at least 400 ft of height and have the ability to fly fast so they
can actually feel the adrenaline that rush towards their body. They also wants the drone
to be able to face a ruggedness situation as we can see drone are really fragile if it
crash or hit something it has the possibility to crash down and breakdown which can
cause a lot of money. Moreover, most of them wants to see the drone to have much
more advance features that differentiate then from the old UAV or drones system
Inspirations
The use of drone technology nowadays are currently evolving as new innovation
and big investment are bringing more advanced drones to the market. Basically, a
drone, in technological terms, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formally known
Essentially, a drone is a flying robot that can be remotely controlled or fly autonomously
conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS. In the recent past, UAVs were most often
associated with the military, where they were used initially for anti-aircraft target
14
Drones are now also used in a wide range of civilian roles ranging from search and
inspection drone based on the preliminary interview that we conducted. We found that
there is needed to improve the current design and system of the drone. Apart from that,
we also conducted a survey and the target market was the users of the drone itself
despite what background of industry that they major in.. Based on our survey (further
explanation on section 4.3.1 Research & Development), we found that most of the users

After doing the analysis to ‘study’ the consumers’ needs, we come out with the
applications to their needs. As the current trend is about drone technology since it is
deliberated as the main mechanism that has the capabilities and functionality that can
related to the technology based and we find out that by developing the better innovative
design that can be use as mechanism tools for inspection whether it is harsh or any
condition that made us vulnerable to cause injury. Besides, providing training to train
people to be competent in maneuver the drone or providing services that requires any

their main mechanisms for inspection as it can save the life from using human as their
inspection mechanism. Moreover, this products are targeted to any industrial company
that need them to inspect a high risk condition such as in the confined space of
pressure vessel or in the boiler or any situation that can cause harms even to any
Our Innovations
After using the SWOT analysis to analyse the problems faced by traditional
drone is time of usage of the flight which their drone unable to have along range of
flight as the drone depending with the gps signal. Moreover the control system during
maneuver of the drone is very low and cause the drone to crash. Because of that, by
applying the Consumer Trend Canvas; we analyze the consumer needs and we
decided to develop one design and system that can enhance the drone technology of
the traditional drone in terms of flight ability specification that focusing in inspection that

As the current system – using drone to play the drones for the own pleasure and
flying for recording or taking picture causes standard outcome, there is a need to
develop new services. New product development is defined as the process by which
entrepreneur designs and creates new product or service that will be sold to customers

1. Idea Generation
Idea can be tangible where something can touch or see or intangible that is
process or procedure that a company uses in order to figure out solutions to any
number of difficult challenges. The idea is generate based on the idea screening and
trends nowadays. Next, the idea then should be discuss, select and implement the best
idea to give the solution for the problem that occurs in the organization.
In this project, the idea generation is developed to know what the users or
students prefer or their trends/opinions about the drone services. Nowadays, people
often using technology such as smartphones, tablets and other devices is ubiquitous,
growing faster and popular. This is because there were 2.8 million available apps at
Google Play Store and 2.2 million apps available in the Apple’s App Store (Statistic
Portal, 2017). Usually the mobile devices run a software application that is called mobile
application. Besides that, drone services also quite catchy on mobile application.
20
Therefore, it can be conclude that the drone services in mobile application is the current
trends nowadays.
2. Idea Screening
a technique to evaluate ideas to drop as many as possible. For this project, the process
of idea screening is to do internet survey or browsing on the company that use drone
services. There are several company that use drone services can be compared such as
BBC
BBC News is one of those major media outlets that has always been open to
implementing the newest technologies in their journalism. BBC was the first media
outlet to broadcast a royal wedding on television, back in the spring of 1960. The feat
BBC World Service Language Services’ Global Video Unit to capture unique footage of
the U.K.-based HS2 railway project. Since then, the team has been constantly
experimenting with ways to seamlessly introduce drones into their journalism, piloting
UAVs over war zones, natural disasters, and dangerous situations that required a
helicopter.
However, some might say that the broadcast network was a little too enthusiastic
about its drones – in 2015, three BBC journalists were brought in for questioning for
piloting a drone over a no-fly-zone in Davos, during the World Economic Forum.
Nevertheless, it has been three years since the incident, so we can safely assume that
the BBC has grown warier of its drone use – some events just do not require a drone for
quality reporting.
EasyJet
From a statistical standpoint, air travel is the safest mode of mass transportation.
If you have ever heard someone saying that you are more likely to die in a road
accident than a plane crash that is actually true. The odds of dying in a car crash are
roughly one in 5,000. If that sounds like something you can work with, wait until you find
22
out the odds of dying in a horrible plane crash: one in 11,000,000. To put the number
into perspective, you are more likely to be struck by lightning, with a one in 13,000
chance. But that does not mean there are no problems, ever. Fatal airplane accidents
do happen, and when they do, the media tends to give them plenty of attention because
they are so rare. In fact, the reason air travel is so safe is that everybody, from the
mechanics and pilots to air hostesses and the driver that shuttles people to the planes
do their due diligence. The easiest way to spot any damage is by taking a top-down
approach – starting from the exterior and gradually advancing toward the interior of the
plane.
But humans are prone to error. Which is why in 2015, EasyJet together with
unmanned-aircraft developer Blue Bear Systems Research made headlines with their
at-then truly novel demonstration, which involved inspecting an Airbus 1320 airliner
inside a hangar at Luton, England, with a drone. After the successful presentation,
EasyJet promised that drones would be adopted on a wider scale for inspection
purposes.
Fast forward to 2018: the company rolled out drone inspections. More
specifically, drones are now used for checking the fuselage for lightning-strike damage.
This is one of the most common hazards that commercial jets face – and the planes are
built to withstand powerful strikes. However, lightning strikes can ruin little components
such as the power feeder and fuel valves, so planes have to be checked at least twice a
23
While a human team can spend up to six hours following through the motions
and inspecting the plane, a drone can reduce that time to a couple of hours. In Blue
Bear’s operations director Gavin Goudie’s words, the shorter inspection time “means
you return an aircraft to service in 2 hr. or begin a repair more quickly.” Therefore, if
other companies were to follow EasyJet’s example and use drones as part of their
maintenance routine, the age-old complaint about the flight being delayed might

untapped market. Initially, the company launched a drone that could fly blood samples
across a river.
They then upped the ante with a medication-delivery drone, after which they
finally launched the third generation of their “Parcelcopter.” And in a field where medical
emergencies are the norm, you can probably understand how important even a few

community, who brought the packages to the “Packstation,” DHL’s miniature version of
a post office. As soon as the package was inserted, a drone grabbed hold of it and
intervention. The DHL drone could deliver the package safely despite adverse weather
conditions, in under eight minutes. It is worth mentioning that the same journey by road
would have taken 30 minutes if you did not take into account other disruptive factors
that might have delayed the delivery. The test, to everybody’s relief, was a success. The
Back to our present day, DHL is still using drones to deliver all sorts of supplies
with great success. In October 2018, the international logistics company completed
drone delivery trials in Tanzania, delivering medicines to an island in Lake Victoria via a
redesigned Parcelcopter model. The results were even more impressive this time
around – the drone completed a 60-km flight in just 40 minutes. The same journey on

Shell
Nobody can dispute the advantages and utility that inspection drones bring to the
worksite. Another company that makes full use of them is Shell. In this case, drones
provide footage of areas that Shell workers struggle to reach physically. The team at
Baton Rouge import terminal, for instance, uses a remotely operated aerial vehicle (a
specialized sort of drone) fitted with a gas sensor to swoop around and check for any
business, back in 2017, Shell Canada launched a pilot training program to teach pilots
to operate the drones. The program is based on the belief that smart drone use can
increase workplace safety and improve maintenance. “So, where we used to send

In other words, jobs that were traditionally dangerous for humans are now

3. Market Survey
For this project, the market survey is to know whether this services will have
demand and give benefits to people when this services operated. Thus, we did a survey
for them by using Google Form. The respondents of the survey are from many
background and mostly age around 23 years old by referring the result of the survey
from figure 6. Based on figure 7, most of the respondents that are 70.8% are student
and 25% of it are working in various sectors. The major sector of the respondent that
are working are in construction that is 66.7%, 16.7% are working in educational sector
27
Figure 8: Working background of the respondent
Figure 9 shows that 70.8% of the respondents never used drone services for
inspection or surveying. Meanwhile 29.2% of the respondents have had used this
services for inspection and surveying. This shows that the drone services are still new in
our country and this will become a great opportunities to start the business because of
28
Figure 10: Result of drone application
From figure 9, it was found out that majority (95.8%) of the respondents think it is
effective to use drone services in term of cost and other 4.2% find it is not cost effective.
It was found out that there are several reasons why the drone for inspection and
surveying are more effective in term cost. The main reason are there will no human
power needed to do inspection and surveying of some dangerous work that can lead to
death or serious injuries such as working in confined space or very high places.
Therefore it can reduce the medical cost to treat workers when accident happened.
Besides, reduction of accidents in a company can reduce the insurance rate of the
company. From figure 10 we can see that most of the respondents that is 87.5% agree
that it is more accurate to used drone for surveying compared to using man power.

This is because majority of the respondents aware that it is much safer and

95.8% of the respondents think that inspection using drones are much safer compared
to using man power. Meanwhile in figure 13 all of the respondents thinks that using
drones are much beneficial during searching or surveying of somethings. In this two
question we asked the respondents to choose between two conditions that is one when
using drones and the others are using man power. This survey proof that most of the
respondents believes that using drones technology to replace man power can gives a

4.3.3 CONCEPT TESTING
Purpose
The purpose of this concept test is to identify whether this service will be able to

Sample Population
The target audience for this concept testing would be UiTM lecturers or students
that have been working or practical in a hazardous environment as they know what kind
of risk being exposed towards labour worker in industry. This will allow for them to see
whether or not this concept will be practical and beneficial towards the worker.

From the findings and discussion, we can see that majority of the respondent are
concern about safety at workplace. The potential harm arise during work especially
when the works are in the dangerous places such confined space or very high places.
Therefore a new way are needed to increase the safety of the workers.

have used the drone services for inspection or surveying but majority of the respondent
agree that using drone are the best choice to reduce accident and more efficient way
compared to using manpower. This is a good opportunity for us to start the drone
services business because there are a lot of potential customers that will used this
