Assignment Brief and Guidance

Task 1:
The time taken, t (in seconds), to boil water in a kettle is inversely proportional to the power, p
(in watts) of the kettle. A full kettle of power 1500 W boils the water in 400 seconds.

A. Write a formula for t in terms of p.

B. A similar kettle has a power of 2500 W. Can this kettle boil the same amount of water in
less than 3 minutes?

Task 2:
For the following sets:

= {positive integers ≤ 24}

D = {factors of 20}
E = {factors of 24}
F = {first seven even numbers}

1. Copy and complete the Venn diagram for these sets.

2. List the elements of F ∪ D.
3. How many elements are there in E′?

Task 3:
A swimming pool is in the shape of a rectangle 10 m by 8 m with two semi-circular ends.
The paved area around the pool is of constant width. The paved area is double the area of
the pool. What is the width of the paved area around the pool?

Task 4:
A pig farmer wants to enclose 600 m² of land for a rectangular pig pen. Three of the sides
will consist of fencing, while the remaining side will consist of an existing stone wall. Two
sides of the fence will be of length x metres.

Task 5:

1. Solve the simultaneous equations y = 1 + 3x − x2 and y = 3 − x graphically.

2. Plot your graphs for −1 ≤ x ≤ 4 and give your answers to 1 d.p.

Task 6:
Write these recurring decimals as fractions in their simplest form.
1. 0. 7̇
2. 0.01̇
3. 0. 6̇ 7̇
4. 3. 04̇ 5̇

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 , ⃗
𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵 , ⃗ ⃗ .
𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 and 𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵

Task 8:

The histogram and the frequency table show the same information about the time that vehicles
spent in a car park.

1. Copy and complete the histogram and frequency table.

2. 50 vehicles were in the car park for more than T minutes. Work out an estimate of the
value of T.

Task 9:
This water tank has dimensions as shown, in metres.

1. Show that the volume of the tank, V m3, is given by

the formula V = x3 − x2

2. Draw the graph of V against x for 2 ≤ x ≤ 5 by first

copying and completing the table.

3. Use your graph to estimate the volume of a tank for which the base area is 16 m2.

4. What are the dimensions of a tank of volume 75 m3?

Task 10:
Find the perimeter and area of of the two
shapes (A&B), giving answers to 3 s.f. All
dimensions are in cm. All arcs are parts of
circles.

Task 11:

An archer shoots his arrows at a target. The probability that he scores a bullseye (a shot in the
𝟏𝟏
middle of the target) in any one attempt is 𝟑𝟑. If he shoots twice, calculate these probabilities:

1. P(two bullseyes)
2. P(no bullseyes)
3. P(at least one bullseye)
